Chapter Nine

1095 Words
Amelia's Point of View "YOU!" I snarled at him in a fit of rage as all of my hero worship disappeared. "Why the f**k would the Moon Goddess allow you to come within ten miles of me?" Surely she wouldn't be so cruel. He reached out towards me as if to comfort a startled animal, but I was not going to fall for any of that s**t. I grabbed his wrist and pinned it behind his back. "Give me one reason why I shouldn't pull your arm out of your socket?" Threatening people with violence was so not me, but in his case, I was prepared to make an exception. "Well, if you would care to take a look at our surroundings, I think you'll find the answer." I took a swift glance around. Several humans had stopped to gawk at what was unfolding between the two of us. I suddenly felt uncomfortable and let his arm go which meant we were now standing very close together. My chest was almost pressed up against his back. It suddenly felt very intimate. I stepped out and around him, placing myself directly in his path once more. He was almost a foot taller than me. I swallowed and took another step backwards. "Thank you for doing that." He replied evenly. "It will certainly make life easier for both of us if all of my body parts remain where they're supposed to be." I flared my nostrils and crossed my arms over my chest. Fine, I would wait until the interest died down and then I'd either run or start trying to break his bones. "You look hungry," he noted in a gentle voice. I'd love to be able to say it grossed me out, but that would be a bare-faced lie. "I'll take you somewhere to eat." "I'd rather stick forks in my eyes" I replied in a sickly sweet voice. The Alpha sighed impatiently. "Perhaps you'd like to tell me where all this hostility is coming from Amelia. I'm pretty sure I just did you a favor!" I was so furious I wanted to rip his head clean off of his shoulders, and yet when he said my name I could feel Vae responding, passing her feelings on to me. What the hell was she doing? It felt like purring. Which was odd for a wolf! "Well let's see." I pretended to contemplate my answer, "Oh yeah! My mother healed you and, to say thank you, you murdered her. Did I leave anything out of the story?" Confusion settled on his jaw-droppingly handsome face. "You think I killed Juliet?" "DON'T YOU EVER SAY HER NAME AGAIN!" I screamed. Several other passers-by had now stopped for the free entertainment. Someone would make a fortune if they started selling popcorn! The Alpha clenched his teeth together. The muscles in his jaw flexed and for one second I was mesmerized by the action. "This is not a conversation that needs several hundred witnesses. Thank the Moon Goddess your Wolf is more level-headed than you, otherwise we really would be in a mess." That really pissed me off. How did he know what my wolf was thinking? I barely knew what she was thinking most of the time. She had a quiet and private soul and I loved that about her. 'He's our mate.' Vae murmured. 'His wolf has reached out to me.' I ignored her. "So the only reason you're still alive is because my werewolf is mated to yours?" "Will you keep your voice down!" He whispered angrily. "People are going to think you're deranged talking about wolves. May we please have this conversation in private? Not least because I own the security company that supplies guards to almost all of the stores in this precinct!" So that nasty predator of a man in the store was an employee of his. How typical! "I'm not going anywhere with you." I hissed back at him. "Otherwise I'll end up dead." The look on his face was one of complete desolation. I expected to revel in the feeling of victory in my one upmanship with this asshole, but I actually felt like I'd hurt myself by hurting him. 'That's the mate bond' Vae chimed in helpfully. 'Will you shut up about this stupid mate bond thing! I don't know what it is, but I don't like it.' I cut the link between us. When I looked back towards the Alpha his eyes were like chips of ice, and the expression on his face terrified me. "My Beta Finlay is with me today." He said in a tight voice. "Perhaps you would feel more at ease if he came with us?" I recognized the tone instantly. He'd used it just a few moments ago in the store. Courteous but dangerous. I felt a small chill run down my spine. Antagonizing him was probably not the smartest thing to do, but I was in control of my own story. And my story wanted me very much alive, thank you very much. "Not in the slightest!" I replied incredulously. "How dumb are you?" There was a growl from behind me. Without turning, I knew exactly who it belonged to. "Beta Finlay, I presume?" "Yes Ma'am." He didn't say anything further, and from the distant look in the Alpha's eyes, I suspected they were having a little chat about my unwillingness to cooperate over mind link. Something that I'd only ever had with my Mom. Anger coursed through me once again. I turned my back on the Alpha, to speak to the lower ranked wolf. Something that was highly disrespectful. "I'm not prepared to go anywhere with either of you." I took my voice down an octave and concentrated very hard on my shaking hands which were now balled into fists at my side. "Your chief in command killed my mother in cold blood. So trust me when I say that you'll have to drag me away kicking and screaming and-" I glanced down and noticed that Finlay was holding the hand of a young girl. And when my gaze traveled from her hand, up to her arm before finally resting on her face, I let out a small squeak of recognition. "Your majesty," I breathed as I bent my head forward low enough so that my chin was touching my chest. I was more than happy to disrespect the Alpha and the rest of his sorry-assed pack, but there was no way in hell that I would be rude to the Winter Witch.
