Chapter Ten

1070 Words
Amelia's Point of View "You know who this is?" The Alpha asked me in surprise. I acted as if I hadn't heard him. "I don't remember meeting you." I addressed Bethany directly. "My Mom drew a sketch of you shortly after you saved us from Alpha Andras and his family." She had been a wonderful artist. The little girl's angelic face twisted into a scowl. "That's not very fair on Alpha Peyton. He's only a year older than you. He was five when your mother took you from Amnythist Moon." Peyton. When I heard his name I almost sighed with contentment. It suited him so completely. I thought back to the first time he said my name and how glorious that had felt despite the state he was in. I wondered if it would affect him in the same way. I mentally kicked myself. His beautiful name did nothing to cover up the fact that he was a cold-blooded killer. I needed to get a handle on my wayward feelings, otherwise it was unlikely I'd get out of here alive. Bethany continued. "You were crying when you came to me. Your Mom said you'd been crying for days because you had to leave him behind, you wanted him to come with you, but she wouldn't take him. I remember you being very cross with her about it." I could almost feel the smugness radiating off of Peyton's body. "That was a long time ago. The only feelings I have towards him," I jammed my thumb over my shoulder, "are not appropriate to express in front of a small child. Even if that child is over a thousand years old." Bethany slapped her hand against her forehead and then dragged it down her face. "Oh my Goddess you're loud today!" "Not to mention unreasonable." Peyton muttered under his breath. "Hard to imagine why when you fuc-" My accusation was cut short when Bethany raised a finger to her mouth. "FINGERS ON LIPS!" She commanded in her child-like voice whilst stamping her foot in temper. After a few seconds and a lot of glaring, it was obvious she wanted me to copy her actions. I heard a slight sniggering sound behind me. "You too, Alpha, and you Beta." I watched as Finlay complied. Peyton was behind me but I assumed he had also done as he was told. I wondered what the hell we looked like to the humans that were still watching our every move. Three adults and a child that was obviously not created by any of us with our fingers glued to our mouths. "The next time anyone has something to say, they have to put their hand up." I blinked at her. Other than a large amount of venomous words and insults towards Alpha Peyton, I realized quite quickly that I had nothing else to say. Neither, it seemed, did the others. "Finally, some peace." Bethany giggled. She removed her Disney frozen backpack before dropping to the floor to sit cross-legged in front of me. "Won't you join me, Amelia?" So I couldn't be loud, but I could sit in the middle of the street? That made absolutely no sense. "With all due respect, your highness, I thought you wanted us to be inconspicuous?" "We are. Look around you child, no one has any idea what we are doing." At this point, anyone else would have sounded bat s**t crazy, but I knew from my mother what Bethany was capable of and I'd seen it myself first hand. So, although I was shocked to within an inch of my life when I started to look around, I wasn't surprised. At first, nothing looked out of the ordinary. The humans were still staring at our odd little group. Only now it appeared that they were really staring at us. In fact, they were so focused on us that they didn't even blink. And that's when I detected her magic, every single being was completely frozen. I'd heard stories of her sorcery, but this was like something out of a children's book. "Silly Amelia." She chuckled, and it was one of the most wonderful things I had heard in my life. "I haven't frozen them. I've frozen time." I was so confused that I almost fell over. Which seemed as good a time as any to sit opposite the most superior being in the world. It amazed me how she seemed to switch from talking like a four-year-old to talking like an adult, and an adult from a different time period at that. "You were caught stealing today, Amelia." She sounded so disappointed in me that I could do nothing but nod. "You've never been caught doing that before, have you?" Rather than give her an answer, I hung my head in shame. "Why do you think your shield wasn't working today?" I lifted my head up so that I met her topaz blue eyes. "My shield?" "Yes, your shield. The one you use so that no one can find you, myself included." I could feel my eyes widening in fear. If she thought I was trying to hide from her, then Alpha Peyton was the least of my problems. "Your majesty, I can assure you that I am not hiding from you. I would never be so disrespectful after what you did for my mother and I-" "Which was what exactly?" Her eyes glinted in such a way that I started to feel threatened. "You disguised our scent so that we wouldn't be found by our pursuers. It also made us secure among humans so that we could live a normal life. I swear to the Moon Goddess I'm telling you the truth." My voice sounded desperate even to my own ears. I had my fingers clasped together with my hands positioned up against my chest as if pleading for my life. It was rumored that Bethany was best friends with our mother. To have someone this sacred doubt me felt beyond awful. "Yes, I know that." She replied after a beat. "You do?" Relief washed through every cell of my body and I started to weep. "Yes. However, that can only mean that your mother lied to me. And more importantly, she lied to you. And I'm so very sorry for her betrayal." I thought about arguing with her. But the pity in her eyes was unmistakable.
