Amelia's Point of View
I really hated doing this but it was necessary in order to survive.
I'd been living rough in my wolf form for quite some time. I'd gotten used to it, but I couldn't get my head around killing animals and eating them raw. When I finally decided that there was no other option, I was so useless at it that I couldn't catch anything if my life depended on it.
Which was why I was now at a very popular supermarket store looking for something to steal. It didn't need to be much, just a loaf of bread and some water. I realized that this type of living was unsustainable, but I hoped that when I figured out how to hunt I wouldn't need to do it anymore.
I picked up my wares and started to browse the shelves that were closest to the exit. Butterflies were exploding in my stomach as my nerves started to get the better of me. This was not the life I had chosen for myself. My life had been ruined by the Alpha of the Amethyst Moon Pack when, after my mother had healed him, he fatally wounded her and left her to die. I vowed that once my strength was back and I'd learned to fight, I would kill him and avenge her death.
My feet started to head towards the exit. I moved slowly so as not to draw attention to myself. It felt like everyone in the store was watching me, but I didn't take my eyes away from the sliding doors that would lead me to freedom.
'Something's not right' Vae warned. 'Something is definitely off'
I thought about dropping my groceries and running as fast and as far as I could, but my stomach growled in protest.
'The door is three feet away, Vae. Just chill for a moment'
I took a couple of steps further and stepped through the automatic glass doors. I exhaled in relief as the breeze hit my face.
And then I felt a hand wrap around the top of my arm.
"Miss - You'd better come with me"
I was turned around against my will and came face to chest with a huge security officer. He looked at me like something he'd stepped in.
"Sir, I can explain-" I started, but I had no idea how to finish that statement. I was in a world of trouble with no way out.
"Of course you can." He answered sarcastically. "Why don't we go for a little walk to the Manager's office, save us causing a scene in front of all of these honest shoppers. You know, we donate a lot of money to homeless charities. Maybe he'll go easy on you. You're a pretty little thing, even if you do smell like a dead dog!" He smiled at me, revealing a row of gold teeth. He reminded me of a shark.
Vae growled. Being called a dog was her least favorite insult. 'We've got the strength to rip his arm out of its socket, let's just turn and run'
'How colorful!' I shuddered inwardly. I wasn't good with blood and gore. I was possibly the worst werewolf in history!
"Darling!! There you are!!" A soft voice exclaimed from behind me. I could sense that the owner of the voice was coming closer and yet the sound of his footsteps were completely absent. We were being approached by a wolf. Talk about jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire.
"I don't know what you think you are doing, but I suggest you get your hands off of my wife whilst they are still attached to your arms." The melodic voice turned ice-cold and menacing. I shivered.
Wife?? Last time I checked I wasn't married. This was clearly a case of mistaken identity. Although weirdly, my heart felt like it was expanding towards my wanna-be savior. I was evidently having hero worship issues.
'Holy s**t!' Vae squealed like a teenage girl. She seemed to be on the same page as I was. But I had no time for her antics, and so I tuned her out. Although, admittedly, it took a lot more effort than usual.
"Listen buddy, if this is your wife, then I'm Santa Claus. I suggest you move along before you get yourself in trouble."
"Why would I lie about something like that?" The stranger asked. His voice held a hint of amusement, but something much darker ran below the surface.
"Beats me. Maybe you just want to help a homeless chick out." The guard let go of my arm so that he could put his hands on his hips. The fingers of his dominant hand were dangerously close to a baton in his utility belt. I swallowed hard.
The man laughed without humor. "Firstly, my wife is not homeless. She is a partner in a charity that helps the homeless, and she has slept rough over the last few nights in order to raise more money. Secondly, my wife is not a chick, she is a lady and I suggest you start treating her like one immediately. Thirdly, she was meeting me at the door because she forgot her purse this morning. Why on earth would my wife need to steal anything?"
Wow! This guy was smooth! How did he come up with all that off the cuff? I had no idea who he was, but I was grateful that he'd stepped in.
The sound of a wallet being flipped open, and a card being pulled out filtered into my ears.
The guard took it with a bored expression and glanced at it without care before doing a double take. And then he stared at it for what seemed like an eternity. I watched as a sheen of sweat appeared on his forehead and top lip. His mouth dropped open, and his hand started to shake.
"Mr Butler. My apologies sir, I had no idea you would be visiting us today." I watched in amazement as the huge man attempted to bow in Mr Butler's direction.
"I don't usually announce my visits. I like to get a feel for how my staff treat the customers where they work." His voice was deadly and powerful, and I found myself bearing my neck a little in submission. He was definitely a highly ranked wolf.
"Mr Butler, if I'd known the circumstances of your wife's appearance then I would not have accosted her in the way I did. It was an easy mistake to make."
"And this is how you would treat someone who is obviously struggling in their life? Call them pretty and offer them up to your manager? Tell me, what would he have done with her, being that she is 'pretty and little'." He threw the guard's earlier words back in his face.
The guard was starting to squirm like a worm on a fishing hook. For the first time in a while I began to smile, it was such a rare thing for me to do, it felt really odd.
"I-I-I" He stammered as he tried to form an answer.
"Don't hurt yourself, slick, there's no rush. My deputy, Finn, will take over from here." He clicked his fingers and another wolf appeared out of thin air. "Darling, let's get you home for a soak in the bath. We don't want anyone else getting it wrong today."
He put his hand against my back and started to guide me out of the store. The heat from his hand spread all through my body and settled at my very core, causing a dull ache in a place I had never used before. It made me want to find something to rub against. To create some friction to control the throbbing.
My hero took a sharp breath in and growled softly. The sound did nothing to improve the aching.
'Mate.' Vae said quietly in my head. But she wasn't excited anymore. She sounded utterly bereft.
I turned slowly towards the man that had just saved me from only the Goddess knew what.
My world and my heart shattered in unison whilst my mind and body filled with rage!! The Alpha that killed my Mom was standing right in front of me.
