The moment the words left her mouth, Paige felt something resembling a small thread snapping from within her.
Alpha Damien’s face twisted in pain as he fell to his knees before her.
Everyone in the room was frozen in place, clearly shocked.
The snap was painful for her, but she’d been through far worse in her life. She suspected it could have just been easier on her because she had no wolf.
Without warning, Paige reached down, taking the drink he still grasped from his hand. Putting it to her swollen lips, she emptied the contents, then turned and limped towards the door, tossing the glass to Lilly, who appeared to be at a loss for words as Paige left the room.
Leaving the pack-house, Paige decided to call a cab, since she was clearly in no condition to walk home.
An hour later, she made her way to her bedroom, carefully stripping her clothing piece by piece, dropping them on the floor as she made her way to the bathroom.
Her instincts were telling her she shouldn’t be here. She knew she should grab her things and run. There was no way he would let her live after being humiliated in front of his pack, but right now she didn’t care.
Limping to the bathroom sink, she turned to the mirror and her breath caught.
The bruises had started to cover her jaw line, running up one whole side of her face and her lips were cracked and swollen.
Opening the medicine cabinet, she took out an ace bandage, placing it on the counter before closing the mirror.
Turning to get a better view of her back, she winced at the pain as she saw bruises had started to form up and down her spine. Thankfully, her werewolf blood was good for something at least. Her body didn’t heal nearly as fast as a normal wolf's would, but it did heal considerably faster than a human's.
Taking a deep breath, she made her way to the shower.
After Paige's shower, she eased herself onto her mattress, instantly closing her eyes and passing out.
Again, those yellow eyes she'd imagined plagued her dreams as she tossed and turned in her sleep.
Unaware of just how much time had passed, Paige was suddenly awoken to the sound of Gabby’s voice next to her bed.
“Jesus Paige, I’ve been calling you for hours. My Dad just told me… Holy balls, what in god's name did he do to you?!” She said as Paige carefully sat up rubbing her eyes.
“Why... that low life, two-faced prick...” She started, then paused, carefully sitting down beside her friend.
“My dad filled me in…” she offered quietly “I honestly can’t believe he did that to his own mate... and to think we had no idea it was you. Did you know...?” she asked softly.
When Paige said nothing, looking down at the swollen hand she’d struck Alpha Damien with, Gabby smiled and scooted closer on the bed before continuing, “I heard how you stuck it to him, walking out of there, like a real-life gangster.” Gabby chuckled “Who knew you had a little bit of your father's style” she beamed like a parent whose child had just won a class fight.
Considering the state Paige was currently in, she thought that it looked the other way around.
“I’m leaving...” Paige said quietly. “It’s time… and in any case, I’m certain he is not going to just let this go.” She continued, reaching up and rubbing her sore neck.
Gabby gave her friend a sad smile. “When?” She asked.
“As soon as possible” Paige mused, looking towards the window as she climbed off the bed. “By the way... how did you get in here?” She asked curiously, walking to the window.
Gabby gave her a puzzled glance before responding. “Spare key under the flowerpot, why?” She reached into her bag, pulling out her phone.
“Did you open my window?” Paige asked, confused, gazing out the open window at the tree line beyond her yard.
Gabby looked up from scrolling her phone. “No, I just got here... Didn’t you open it?” She responded.
Paige didn’t answer. Instead, she reached out, closing the window, securing the lock in place.
“I have to go see an old friend.” Paige stated, quickly changing the subject before making her way back to the bed.
She hastily reached under her pillow feeling for the gun. As her hand touched the weapon, she relaxed a little, releasing it and turning back to her friend.
“I’m going to need some painkillers and a dress.” Paige said.
Gabby hopped off the bed. “I’m your man!” She retorted enthusiastically, giving Paige a wink and throwing an arm over Paige’s shoulder.
Paige winced and Gabby frowned before asking "But... I’m not so sure you're in any condition to be going out…” Gabby was saying with her brows furrowed.
“I’m fine...” Paige interjected sarcastically.
Gabby eyed her skeptically. “It’s just a little bump on the head.” Paige lied, rolling her eyes, not wanting to worry her friend. “I’ll be fine, but this needs to be handled before I go anywhere."
Paige grabbed a pair of sweats from her dresser, pulling them over her hips.
Picking up Paige’s bag, Gabby reluctantly handed it over. “Ok, my house is it... but where are we going after that?” She asked curiously.
Paige took the bag and went to her bed, reaching under her pillow, grabbing the weapon and securing it in her bag. She turned back to Gabby with determination.
“Club Sin.”
Gabby’s eyes widened as Paige walked past her, opening the door.
Later that night, the girls arrived at club sin, one of the hottest clubs in the city.
As planned, they had stopped beforehand to change at Gabby’s house, Gabby, insisting on doing Paige's hair and makeup.
The knee-high boots and little black dress Gabby had chosen for her to wear was short and tight, making Paige’s naturally tanned breasts pop and barely managing to cover her other assets, so to speak, while highlighting her small waist.
Thankfully, it did cover most of her back, but Paige wore her hair down to hide the rest of her injury.
She had felt slightly uncomfortable in her current attire but decided not to argue with her friend. However, Paige was sure it would draw the kind of attention she was looking to avoid tonight... but she wasn't about to hurt Gabby's feelings, and she had to give her friend credit. Those bruises were not easy to cover.
Her overly enthusiastic friend had been so proud of her masterpiece, as she had called it, but Paige nearly changed her mind when Gabby pulled out the body glitter in the car.
As they neared the entrance of the club, the bouncer unhooked the chain, stepping aside for them to pass.
Club Sin was loud with colorful lights flashing and moving along with the beat of the music.
Guests danced and grinded against each other on the dance floor. Paige couldn’t scent them like Gabby, but she knew this club was owned by wolves, hosting a wide variety of clientele including wolves, vampires, humans and more.
This club was a mutually respected establishment for creatures of all kinds.
Gabby pointed towards the bar silently indicating she wanted a drink, and they made their way through the crowd.
The bartender who had spiked black hair with blue tips and an eyebrow piercing was currently mixing and pouring cocktails behind the bar, but looked up and smiled at them as they approached.
“I’m looking for Branson.” Paige wasted no time, getting straight to the point.
His smile faded. “Do you have an appointment?” He asked her casually, focusing on the cocktail he was mixing.
Paige reached into her bag and pulled out a small silver business card, holding it in the air before placing it on the counter.
“I don’t need an appointment.” She responded, sliding it across the bar.
