Mate.

The bartender picked it up, a momentary look of surprise crossed his face as he glanced back at her before gesturing to the back of the bar. As Paige retrieved the card and started to leave, Gabby grabbed her arm. “You’re not leaving already are you?” Her friend said, giving her a disappointed frown. “We haven’t even danced yet.” she whined, poking out her bottom lip. Paige gave her a sour expression before stealing one more glance across the bar to where the bartender had directed her. “At least have a couple of drinks with me...” Gabby stated, steering Paige back to the bar. “One drink.” Paige stated, giving her friend a sultry look. “Yay, I win!” Gabby flipped her freshly curled hair, smiling sweetly at the bartender before throwing an arm on the counter. “So, I’ll have a Bad b***h cocktail and my girlfriend here will have a Dirty Little Virgin...” Gabby said smoothly, giving him a wink. Page glared at her and the bartender smirked as he poured the martini he was mixing. “Coming right up.” he said, giving her a wicked grin. Gabby turned her head, playfully batting her eyelashes at Paige. Rolling her eyes again, Paige pulled out her phone. 11:45. If she was being honest, she was grateful they had ordered drinks. The painkillers were starting to wear off and the pain was gradually getting harder to bear. Paige hoped the alcohol would help to numb it some. Only a few minutes had passed before the bartender set down their drinks. “On the house... Owner's request.” He nodded up to the balcony on the second floor of the club. Paige and Gabby both glanced up to see a familiar face leaned against the railing. Felix Sauveterre stood there in his usual attire staring down at them. Gabby put her hand up to wave, but Paige quickly yanked it back down again. Turning her back on him. Reaching across the counter, Paige retrieved the Bad b***h Cocktail, raising a smug brow at Gabby before taking a sip as she turned, making her way towards the back of the club. Gabby laughed, shaking her head. “Is this going to be a regular thing now...? Stealing other people's drinks?” She teased, watching her friend walk away. Lucian’s POV “I’m starting to think your informant was a dead end!” Lucian snapped, seated in the seat opposite of his beta with his arms folded across his chest. “We haven’t even been here that long, and you’re already ready to give up?” His Beta Gabriel said, stretching out his hands before resting them behind his head. “This whole ridiculous endeavor has proven to be nothing but a wild goose chase.” Lucian shot back, rubbing his temples and closing his eyes. “This mood of yours wouldn’t have anything to do with a certain human little girl that managed to give you the slip...?” his friend chuckled. Lucian opened his eyes, shooting his beta a warning look. Choosing to ignore the irritating remark, he continued. “This would have been handled already had I just followed through with what I'd originally intended, dealing with the Alpha and the suspected members myself.” He growled and continued to massage his temples. “Remind me again why I haven’t done this...?” Lucian groaned. Gabriel sighed. “Because, my dear Alpha, you are trying to make peace with your grandfather, and removing limbs from the bodies of his faithful treaty members might be a minor setback.” His beta responded, stifling a yawn. Lucian snorted. “He is the one that desires peace. I have no interest in politics. My methods speak for themselves, always producing the desired results. Perhaps he is the one that should be taking notes.” He retorted, leaning back in his seat, giving his friend an arrogant smirk. Gabriel frowned. “You can tell him that, the next time we’re in the capital.” he responded dryly. “I have, many times.” Lucian mused, glancing out the window as they arrived at their destination. Club Sin. Beta Gabriel rolled his eyes and followed his Alpha's gaze. Two women were walking into the club but only their backs were visible from this angle. One of them had short auburn hair and the other had long brown locks nearly reaching her waist. The women quickly disappeared into the club as the driver opened the door, and they swiftly exited the car. Approaching the bouncer, his beta whispered a name to the man, causing him to pull out a phone and speak fluent French to someone on the other end of the line. Moments later, the man ended the call and opened the chain to let them enter. Upon entering the club, Lucian scanned the room as a tall white-haired man approached them with two women at his sides, holding his hands open in a welcoming stance. “This is indeed a rare pleasure, Mon ami, making an acquaintance such as yours.” He stated with a thick French accent. “Sauverre, I presume...” Gabriel gestured to the man. Felix sauverre waved the women forward, and they eagerly obliged, making their way to each of the two men, reaching out to take their jackets. The one attempting to assist Lucian paused as he gave her a withering glance. “If you value your arm, I wouldn’t...” he growled in a low dangerous tone. The woman looked mortified before quickly taking a step back and bowing her head in respect. His Beta, who was engaging the other young woman that now appeared to be hanging on his shoulder, turned back to Sauverre. “Apologies...” His Beta offered with a smile before continuing “The Alpha here values his personal space.” Lucian, already short on patience, ignored the remark and brushed past both men before turning back to Sauverre. “I trust our arrival has been kept private.” He stated in a dismissive tone as he casually glanced around the nightclub. Sauverre hesitated a moment, looking at Lucian. “Of course, Mon seir.” He quickly responded, placing one hand to his chest and his other in the direction of the VIP lounge. The moment they began to wade through the crowd, Lucian abruptly froze and sniffed the air. The scent of cherry blossoms… with a hint of vanilla and something much stronger hit him like a freight train, nearly knocking him over. He staggered and looked around the club again as his vision blurred slightly. Lucian's first thought was that he might have been poisoned. Then his wolf suddenly began to stir in the back of his head. Brazos growled a low primal sound in the back of his mind. Lucian put a hand to his head and tried to stand up straight, peering around again as his vision continued to come in and out of focus. The strong scent of pheromones surrounded him as the crowd moved and grinded on one another to the rhythm of the music, but Lucian's senses were still engulfed in that one foreign scent. His Beta was instantly at his side trying to help him move through the crowd, but Lucian instinctively pushed him away, frantically driven to find the source of that intoxicating smell. ‘Mate.’ Brazos growled. For a moment Lucian thought he had misheard. ‘Mate!’ Brazos growled again in a more demanding tone. Lucian was attempting to see through the haze once more when his eyes inadvertently glazed over. Beta Gabriel instantly stepped back, looking at him in surprise. “Alpha your eyes, they’re..." he started, then stopped as Lucian's gaze frantically scanned the club. ‘MATE! FIND THEM NOW!’ Brazos demanded, seemingly going into a catatonic state. Lucian leaned over, once more, feeling like his scull was cracking open. He struggled to keep his wolf from shifting right then and there. In a thousand years, Brazos had never done anything remotely like this. Lucian couldn’t fathom what the devil had come over his wolf. Lucian tried to focus, his eyes moving around the club once more in search of the source, but couldn’t determine the origin of the scent. He vaguely noticed that Gabriel was now a few feet away discussing something with Sauverre, who stood there looking very uncomfortable as he sent a few nervous glances in Lucian's direction. Lucian ignored them both as Brazos continued his hysterics in the back of his mind. Suddenly, he felt his hold over the beast slipping and his senses instantly heightened, the surrounding noises died out, and he watched as everything began to move in slow motion. Almost instantly, Brazos had caught the trail of the mouthwatering scent and Lucian straightened before quickly making his way to the back of the club.
