The Midnight Wolf

Something strange is going with my family. They started acting weird ever since I turned 18. It's like they're waiting for something to happen to me.

I woke up to my mom and dad whispering in the kitchen, but as soon as they saw me they stopped.

"What's going mom and dad? Why have you guys been acting so strange ever since I turned 18?" I asked them.

"Well Alexie, we need to talk to you about something important. We've been keeping you in the dark about who you really are, who all of us are." Mom said. She then looked at dad as if begging him to continue.

Dad sighed. "Have a seat baby girl. We want you to know that we love you and we never meant to keep this from you. You see, we are shifters, werewolves to be specific. We come from a long line of shifters."

"What? You guys are joking right? Werewolves aren't real, they're just a myth!"

"Believe me when I tell you that they're real. We are werewolves hun. You'll be shifting for the first time on the next full moon which is in a week." Dad explains to me.

"You guys really expect me to believe that we're werewolves? Do you need to go to the hospital to get your head's checked?"

"Stop it right there young lady. We know this is hard to believe and it's a lot to take in, but we'd never tell you this if it wasn't true. Why do you think we live where we are right now? It's because our wolves need the freedom to run in the forest!" Mom sounded tired.

"Marley, since she doesn't believe that we're wolves we should just show our wolves to her. That would bring the point home." Dad says to mom.

"Show me? So you're just gonna shift into a wolf that might kill me? Guys come on, that's just stuff out of the movies."

"Just stay where you are and don't move, okay?"

"Fine! Since you guys are so determined to prove that we're wolves. Go ahead and do whatever it is that you do." I said to them feeling exasperated with them.

I watch them and see my dad nod to my mom. All of a sudden I hear a sound like bones cracking and my mouth drops open. I can't believe what I'm seeing. My parents are no longer standing there, instead I see two wolves in their places.

I try to get up and run but I hear a growl coming from the wolf in the spot where I last saw my dad. I sat back down on my chair and the wolf walks over to me. I look into it's eyes and see the same eyes my dad has.

"Dad is that really you?" I asked. The wolf nuzzles my hand in response. I run my hand over the wolf's fur. "But.....how.......I don't understand. How is this possible?"

They change back into humans and I look on in wonder. "We have a lot to explain to you sweetheart. There is a lot that you need to learn before your first shift. We never meant to keep this from you."

They spent hours after their demonstration telling me all about werewolves and shifting. They also told me about finding my mate, the one that completes me. I wonder when and how I'll find him is the last thought on my mind as I fall asleep that night.
