Why Did You Call Her Moondrop

1843 Words
Michael's POV My assignment was over, court was done for now so I was happy to be heading back home.  Funny I considered it home. I walked into the house where I was living with the band and everyone was there.  That was nothing new the guys often gathered together with their wives several times a week in fact.  Only a few of them actually lived-in other houses most of them lived here in this huge house or in the other house at the end of the property.  What surprised me was the two little bundles of pink in Priscilla and Amber's arms.  I know I had been gone a month but crap I wondered who had the baby.  As far as I knew none of the ladies were pregnant. I mean I knew that Priscilla had that miscarriage a month ago before I left and it killed both her and Brian.  That's when Larry looked up at me and said "glad your home buddy.  How did the assignment go?"  He knew I had to go for a while to carry out a mission and it was really nice having someone be concerned that wasn't a part of the squad.  "I asked first dude you don't get off that easy."  With that Larry took a deep breath and explained that they found their sister.  That somehow, she had made her way from New York to California without telling them.  What surprised them was she had been pregnant and they didn't know who the father was.  They weren't clear if she was the victim of random violence or if someone had come after her on purpose.  My heart skipped a few beats thinking of my moondrop.  But that wasn't this girl as moondrop wasn't in New York.   "We need your help in providing security for these angels and Elizabeth in the hospital if you are up to it."  John the cop was asking me.  I shrugged my shoulders "why not, I'm down for a year doing paperwork and actually for the next month doing nothing so helping you all out will be no problem."  With that John shook his head and said "good then if you want you can take first shift at the hospital with our sister we can leave in a few minutes."  I looked at him and said "ready whenever you are."  I remember the guys talking about their sister and how they had tried to keep in contact with her and suddenly I remembered something moondrop had described something similar happening to her but her uncle had forced her to tell her brothers that she was going to go live somewhere else. I looked over at the two little bundles of pink and wondered to myself if my baby had been born.  If these were mine.  If my moondrop was their sister what did they call her Elizabeth?  Could it be that after all this time I found her?  The name slipped through my mind like honey sweet and full of promise. "Great let's head out now then I really don't want her being alone until John finds out more about the guys that attacked her."  Brian spoke up. "I'll take him that way then I can explain to hospital staff who he is and what he's doing there.  Also, that they will have to be cleared through him first before getting close to her.  But at the same time, I can explain to him the medical procedures that are going to take place."  Everyone seemed to nod in agreement and so off Brian and I went to the hospital.  For some reason I was getting a sense of dread in my stomach as if I really didn't want to see their sister in this hospital.  On the drive Brian was explaining to me that she had been in a coma for just about two weeks now.  That they were checking with local hospitals to see if she had registered under her name and given birth around here.  That the injuries she suffered were so serious that the paramedics didn't know how she had been alive when they got to her let alone when they got to the hospital.  My heart clenched this woman sounded so much like my moondrop that it was uncanny.  We went straight away to the fourth floor where Brian gathered all the staff there and explained to them that I was there to protect and guard his sister.  That until they knew the threat was contained and she was no longer in danger I or someone like me would be there at all times.  He went on to explain that precautions they would have to take in identifying themselves before getting to exam Elizabeth.  That's when a nurse spoke up and said "you know we think she might be waking up.  She keeps talking.  Calling out some guy’s name. She is really agitated when she says his name, I think something happened to him and she's remembering."  With that being said I nodded to Brian and indicated that it was time for us to go to the room so that I could one, get to see this woman I'm going to be guarding and two, see what security measures are going to be needed to be put into place.  We walked into the room and my gaze went to the crumpled figure in the bed.  She looked so small and so fragile. She looked so familiar and I felt as if I knew her.  As I got closer, I realized I knew who this woman was.  I hit my knees at the sight of her collapsing from the weight of all these months of not knowing where she was.  Anguish hitting me because I didn't protect her from being hurt like this.  Brian put his hand on my shoulder "are you alright dude?  You look like you have seen a ghost."  I looked up at him with tears in my eyes.  Just then a nurse burst through the doors and addressed Brian. "Doctor we just got confirmation from the county hospital that your sister was there sixteen days ago and gave birth to healthy twin baby girls."  Brian looked at the nurse and thanked her but the nurse had more to say I could tell she did.  I looked at the nurse and said "what else did they say?"  She cleared her throat and started "they said that when she first checked in, she used a fake name because someone was chasing her and they were dangerous.  But she had changed because she didn't want her children having her fake name on their birth certificate.  When she was asked if it was the father of the babies she cried and told them that he was dead.  Also, you should know the hospital didn't even get to keep her a full day/night she was attacked in the hospital and insisted on checking out AMA.  The hospital paid for her to have a taxi she said she was going to the home of family.  But turns out the address was bogus.  Only two hours later was she admitted here." I wanted to slam my fists into the faces of the goons that worked for her uncle.  I knew who had did this.  Even from behind bars he was still trying to direct traffic.  That explained the defenses question of "how do we know this girl is even still alive if nobody has seen or talked to her."  The asshole had put out a hit on his own niece.  Just then my cell phone rang it was Chad and I answered it.  "Hey buddy we got a lead that you might want to check out.  Turns out a young woman by the name of Elizabeth Cain checked into the county hospital there, gave birth and then checked out with her newborns AMA.  But here is the kicker just today the same young woman showed up on the roster of the hospital that your buddy Brian works at sporting some severe injuries."  I cut him off "Chad it's moondrop."  The other end of the phone was silent for a few seconds as Chad drew in a breath and then he said "buddy we won't know if it's her or not until you check it out."  I drew a long breath and then said "I'm looking right at her right now.  Elizabeth is the sister to the guys I'm in the band with.  Elizabeth is moondrop.  I've found her. Oh, and Chad she's in bad shape and she needs protection.  So do my girls how soon can you and the guys get here?"  Chad replied "we are on our way be there in a couple hours." I turned to look at Brian and with tears in my eyes asked him what her prognosis was.  Brian said with coma patients it was hard to tell.  That medically at this time there was nothing wrong with her it was all on her if she woke up or not.  Then he asked the million-dollar question "why did you call her moondrop?" I sucked in a breath, raked my hands through my hair. “Your sister is the woman I had been telling you all about.  I can’t believe I didn’t put it together and earlier.  All this time we talked about your sister and your uncle.  I saw the resemblance in the two women but my mind wouldn’t let me make the connection.  I had known by seeing her that it was in fact the woman I was in love with, then when I got the call from Chad I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that this woman, your sister, was my moondrop.”  Brian let out a gasp and said “who would have thought that our little sister would be the same woman you were looking for.  Does this mean that she didn’t go to New York like she told us?”  I shook my head at him and said “no he made her make that call.  He made her say those things to you  guys because he threatened to kill you all if she didn’t.”  Brian had tears in his eyes and marveled at how strong his little sister was.  I had already known she was a strong woman.  It didn’t surprise me hearing how she protected our little girls I had seen first hand how she protected those women at her uncles house.  I wanted nothing more than to scoop her up and hold her at that moment but I just couldn’t.  She was hooked to so many machines and looked so helpless.  I loved this woman and a sob left my mouth at the thought that I would never get the chance to tell her that.  I prayed to God that he would allow her to wake up so that I could make it up to her.  I promised to make every day for the rest of our lives the happiest she ever had.
