CHAPTER ELEVEN On the drive from the airport, Stella had noticed a local shopping center a few blocks away. She decided to go there straight away. Grabbing her purse, she headed out, feeling exposed and vaguely guilty as she walked up the long driveway. At any minute, she expected to hear the clatter of wheels on paving and for one of the family to pull up next to her and demand to know where she was going. They didn’t, and she got through the gate without seeing anyone except a gardener toiling over a flower bed on the far side of the lawn. Breathing in the fresh air as she walked made her start to feel better, even though nausea still roiled inside her.
