White bark of the Lost Souls - Chapter 3

897 Words
Aziza’s POV: I stared at the tree that stood before me, the bleach white bark seemed to glisten under the moonlight as I gently placed my palm upon the cool wood. I closed my eyes and focused on the groves within the bark and took a shallow breath in and allowed the woodland scent to fill my senses. I could sense the vibrations of the trees as the very life within them shimmered with vibrancy. I exhaled the breath that I had been holding for those short moments and opened my eyes and watched as my hot breath evaporated within the winter air. I had only been here for a few short moments, but I could already sense the energy that came from the earth around me. The echoing screams of my people filled my ear as the gruesome flames and bloodlust swallowed them whole, they’d been consumed by the greed of one man who was determined to get what he wanted even if it meant the m******e of an entire tribe. I glanced up at the transparent leaves that billowed within the winter air, my sinuses tingled as I attempted to suppress the sorrow that I felt towards the loss of my ancient bloodline. I sought revenge even if it was against the nature of my kind, my kind who worshiped the world of Mara for centuries and protected the boundary between this world and the next. I will get her back, I thought sullenly. I raised my fist and thrust it into the trunk of the tree, the Tree of Souls connected our pure souls to the world of Mara, they were rare to come by as the humans that once inhabited the land chopped them down generations ago as they did not suit their vision of the world. It took the form of a regular Oak tree when the sun pierced through the heavy clouds and radiated through its firm trunk, its true appearance was revealed within the light of the moon once night fell. “You shouldn’t do that to the tree,” a gentle voice said. I stared at the rough bark before me, surely, I hadn’t lost my mind already. It was then when an unfamiliar scent hit me, it was sweet like wild strawberries. She took a step closer and seemed to drag her feet within the snow as she breathed gently and yet cautiously. “I’m guessing Cyrus sent you to come looking for me?” I asked slightly annoyed. “Cyrus?” She asked with hesitation. Something within her voice compelled me to turn around and face the mysterious creature who had snuck up from behind me. My eyes widened with surprise as I took in her appearance, the woman standing before me was supernaturally beautiful as if she were a creature who belonged in the spirit world. Her eyes shimmered with an intense golden hue as if the sun itself were burning behind her eyes with long auburn hair that hung over her shoulders in loose ringlets. Her doll-like face glowed with illuminating radiance. I stared at her disbelievingly as the curve of her chin caught my attention, there was a hint of a scar that made the primal side within me awaken as the urge to protect this beautiful creature consumed me. I bit my bottom lip nervously as the thought of breaking her tore through my mind at a rapid rate, for a moment, I’d forgotten the words that spilled from her perfectly full lips. I would do anything at that moment to have her moan my name with her naked body quivering from under me. “I’m guessing he didn’t send you?” I asked without taking my eyes off her. “No,” She silently murmured. Her vibrant golden eyes quickly glanced around as her eyebrows scrunched together in worry. She looked like she wanted to run away, her movements were silent and graceful as she slowly took a step backwards. “I can’t be here,” She said with hesitation before she quickly turned on her heels and ran through the snow in the opposite direction. “There you are!” an exasperated tone said as it approached me. I continued to stare at the now space, a space where a young and beautiful creature had once stood. Her faint sweet strawberry scent was now long gone as the feather-like snow now filled the spots where her feet once stood, it was as if she’d never existed. I slowly turned to face the man who’d managed to sneak up behind me as I was in a dazed and confused state. Kyson, I thought dully. I’d, unfortunately, crossed paths with him a few times in the past and I’d never been impressed by the wolf who stood confidently before me, it amazed me as to why Alpha Cyrus chose him as his Beta. Alpha Cyrus, I thought to myself as my chest became tight from anxiety. I could only hope that he would open up his home to me after the tragedy that befell my pack, a pack that no longer existed as it had been wiped out completely by the hands of a greedy bastard. “Cyrus is looking for you,” Kyson said with a slight smirk on his face. We had never gotten along with the beta for one reason or another and I could only imagine the gruesome thoughts that were running through Kyson’s head. “Yeah,” I said simply before I stole one last glance at the spot the girl had been standing. Those golden eyes…
