“Wint-" Cyrus started before he was interrupted by an approaching figure whose presence seemed to announce itself.
“Hey, Alpha!” Kyson called out.
I looked over at the approaching form of my father's Beta and couldn’t help but blush as I took in his appearance. Kyson was tall with sandy blond hair and green eyes, the smirk that always found its way onto his face seemed to draw in those around him. My wandering brown eyes traced the lines of his face and settled briefly on his eyes.
Kyson has always been attractive and with a confident arrogance that seemed to rub me the wrong way. We had never gotten along, and my father had always attempted to keep us apart.
Tonight, was no exception.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Cyrus growled towards his Beta whose eyes instantly grew wide with fear.
I attempted to hide the smirk that was threatening to form on my lips only to fail and catch a glare from Kyson as he stared me down. He quickly shifted his gaze over to my father and mumbled an apology under his breath as he took in the hatred in my father’s eyes.
“He's here…” Kyson said under his breath as Cyrus's dominating presence forced him to cower and look down at the ground.
“Get the hell out of here now! And don’t ever come back!” Cyrus shouted angrily before he briefly glanced towards the darkening sky.
“I’ll be there shortly,” Cyrus finished before he finally allowed Kyson to take off in a hurry.
I glanced towards the sky; the stars were just beginning to appear behind the fading clouds. Soon the moon would appear and cast a ghost-like shadow upon the frozen pond. My body began to tingle slightly as I closed my eyes and imagined the moon shining down on me.
“Winter!” Cyrus said harshly as he grasped my arm and began to drag me towards the small cottage that I called home.
His sudden outburst and the violent way he grasped my arm ripped me out of my dreamlike reverie. I stared at him in confusion before remembering that it was past my curfew and that was why he sought me out.
“Cyrus, I’m 18 now! You can’t keep locking me up inside every night!” I said angrily as he dragged me through the snow.
He ignored my words and dragged me towards the front door, a door that only locked from the outside with massive locks that were meant to keep me within, Cyrus was the only one with the keys thus making him my captor. I felt like a caged bird who only wanted to feel flight from under my wings even if it was just once. He never permitted me to be around the others which made me ostracized and a complete outsider.
“Cyrus!” I screamed as he threw open the door and pushed me inside.
“I don’t want to hear it, Winter!” Cyrus said harshly before he slammed the door on my face and abruptly locked it behind him.
I screamed obscenities at the space before me as I threw myself at the door and pound my fists on the solid wood causing the vibrations to shatter through the trees. Anyone within miles of the cottage could hear me but no one could save the captured bird.
“Cyrus!” I screamed louder as my bones ached from under my skin.
I hate him! I thought as I imagined my father dying and thoroughly enjoying it.
After half an hour of absolute rage and frustration, I finally surrendered to my fate, a fate that I was forced to face every single day of my life. All I wanted to do was run away, even if it meant that I had to join those of my species.
Humans, I thought with a slight shudder.
I felt absolutely no connection with humans, nor did I feel a connection with those who I’d been raised with. I was like an outsider forced to look in with no way of belonging. I gently placed my fingertips onto my temple and slowly ran my fingers through my auburn locks and massaged my head. A migraine was slowly forming on my temples and making its way to the back of my head where it coursed down my spine. I pressed my back against the door and slowly sunk to my knees, I gripped my hair and breathed in deeply as I attempted to steady my growing nerves.
“I can’t stand this,” I whispered to myself.
My words seemed to echo in my ears and hung within the air before me, a tingling sensation arose from within my chest as I pulled my fingers from my reddening roots and stared blankly at my palms.
I need to get out of here, I thought to myself as I climbed to my feet and found my way to the opposite side of the room.
My knees dug into the hardwood floor as I steadily made my way over to my bed, my auburn locks fell over my face as I glanced up at the oak headboard. I felt compelled to run my fingertips across the dark stained wood and trace my fingers along the scratch marks that adorned the rough wood that had formed over the years.
I grasped the headboard and aggressively pulled the heavy object away causing a loud screeching sound to echo through the empty halls. I quickly climbed over to the newly exposed space against the wall and nestled my body between the small crevice. I traced my fingers along the wood wall and felt my way towards a hidden entrance that was barely visible among the darkness.
Found it, I thought to myself as my fingertips passed through the small hole in the wall.
Finally.
