Chapter 2

Ethan's expression grew cold. "You're overthinking it. I was just passing by." "Passing by?" Yvette scoffed in contempt. "I bet you saw our Madam is beautiful and wealthy, so you are trying to create a chance encounter to impress her so you can win her over!" "That is not going to work! You two aren't even in the same league!" Yvette said disdainfully. "Here's some advice: stop chasing a far-fetched dream. Find a job to feed yourself, or you'll end up starving. No matter how hard you try, an ex-convict like you will never be on the same level with her." Samantha's expression darkened, her eyes filled with coldness. 'This man is really amusing—sneaking around and still being defensive when caught. It is just so off-putting. The most valuable thing in a person is self-awareness. How would the stars in the sky ever be interested in a cockroach in the dark corners?'  Thinking this, Samantha was about to leave with a look of disgust. But at that moment, an elderly woman suddenly collapsed on the side of the road. "Someone has fainted!" Passersby quickly gathered around. "I'm a doctor. Please, move away!" A man with glasses pushed his way through the crowd. After a quick examination, he sighed and shook his head. "The patient is experiencing heart failure. I'm afraid there's nothing we can do." "What?" A little girl burst into tears. "This can't be possible! My grandma has always been healthy. How could she suddenly have heart failure?" Ethan couldn't help but frown as he observed the elderly woman. Her lips were pale, her forehead was covered in sweat, and she was experiencing joint spasms. This appeared to be severe myocarditis leading to cardiac arrest. It was a condition that ordinary doctors would not be able to cure. Ethan had a vial of medicine specially made by him, and it would be all that was needed to restart the elderly woman's heart. With this medicine, she did not even need to visit a hospital after that. Ethan's face flashed with a wry smile. He crouched down beside the elderly woman, took a vial of colorless liquid from his pocket, and carefully fed it to her. "Madam, look at Ethan—he's acting like a complete pervert!" Yvette's face flashed with anger as she said with disgust, "The old woman is already dead. But he was smiling and even touching her around. This person is absolutely a maniac!" Samantha frowned deeply. As Ethan finished feeding the medicine and stood up, she quickly walked over to him. "Let me take a look at her!" Samantha said flatly. "Move away! Miss Reed can heal her!" Yvette gave Ethan a violent push and threw a fierce glare at him. The crowd was startled as they watched Samantha pull out a vial of purple liquid from her pocket. This was a new drug she had recently developed under the guidance of her mentor, Gregory Harris. It was designed specifically for treating heart disease, yet it had not been tested. Ethan frowned slightly. He had already given that elderly woman a medicine and she would wake up in two minutes. But he noticed that Samantha's purple medication was a defective product he had developed three years ago while in prison. He knew it wouldn't harm her, so he chose to remain silent. Two minutes later, the elderly woman opened her eyes. "She's awake! What an amazing drug!" The crowd on the street erupted in astonishment as they all cast admiring glances at Samantha. Samantha was taken aback. She had only fed a small sip of the medication, and yet the elderly woman had woken up so quickly! 'This new drug is indeed remarkable. Once it's on the market, I will again get great achievement in the medical field. I should even be able to win Nobel Prize in Medicine!' After the moment of astonishment, a hint of pride flashed in Samantha's eyes. Yvette was not surprise. "She is called Samantha Reed, a disciple of the top Medical Master Gregory Harris from the Mystic Valley. Treating this kind of illness is like a breeze for her!" This brief presentation struck like a massive rock dropped into a pond, sending waves of astonishment rippling through the crowd. "She is actually a disciple of the top Medical Master from the Mystic Valley! No wonder she's so impressive. The old lady is so lucky to be able to run into Master Gregory's disciple here!" "I've heard that Master Gregory can even cure the dead, and his only female disciple has already become the youngest academician at the National Academy of Medicine, and her surname seems also to be Reed! Could it be...?" "Exactly! I've seen Miss Reed's photo on the cover of Nature, the Asia's leading medical journal! This lady is indeed Samantha Reed! It is a stroke of luck for us to meet Academician Reed here!" Everyone gathered around Samantha as though she were a superstar, eagerly handing her their business cards in hopes of befriending her. Ethan was once again taken aback. 'The renowned Medical Master Gregory had come to ADX Florence three times, tearfully begging to be accepted as my disciple. I had reluctantly shared my insights with him on several occasions, including the flawed prescription for this medicine that treats heart disease. So this Samantha is that old fellow's disciple?' Samantha gave a dismissive wave of her hand. Glancing at the stunned Ethan, she said coldly, "As you can see, we're not on the same level. I suggest you stop pestering me." "Miss Reed charges no less than $500,000 for treating the wealthy," Yvette said with a smirk. "And you can't even earn $5,000 a month. How could you possibly be worthy of her?" She added with pride, "Moreover, our Miss is the daughter of the Reed family, a prodigy born with a silver spoon in her mouth. People like you could never dream of getting close to her." She snapped, "Give up on your fantasies! Madam is Master Gregory's disciple, and she can easily sell a million copies of any book she publishes. You can only look up from a distance!" Everyone finally understood what was going on here. This ordinary-looking man was actually a pursuer of Academician Reed! "Can't even earn $5,000 a month and still think you can court Academician Reed? Hmph! You're really overestimating yourself!" "The Reed family is worth billions, and Miss Reed is really talented. You should take a good look at yourself first if you're thinking of living off her!" "There are so many rich young men pursuing Academician Reed, and the queue can be as long as one can imagine. But she has not given any of them a thought, let alone someone as poor as this man!" Ethan couldn't help but smile. He looked at Samantha and said lightly, "I've read your medical papers, and I must say they're really plain with no new points. That old fool Gregory is not good at research, and his disciples' character is even worse! Next time I see him, I'll have to give him a piece of my mind!" Hardly had the words left his mouth when the crowd erupted again. "What did that kid just say? Old fool? He called Master Gregory an old fool? He's really asking for trouble!" "He speaks as if he were very familiar with Master Gregory. Someone like you doesn't even have the right to meet Master Gregory! Get yourself treated quickly and stop bragging here if you are insane!" "You don't even know your own worth, yet you dare to criticize Miss Reed's papers. You are definitely the most shameless person I have ever seen!" "You are definitely unforgiveable! How dare you insult my Master?" Samantha's expression was icy as she said in a cold tone, "But since I was the one who broke off the engagement first, I'll let you go this time." "Go to Emerald City and apologize to Vanessa. If you're sincere enough, she might toss you some money to scrape by for the rest of your pathetic life." With that, Samantha turned her back on Ethan with a haughty air and left the courthouse with her bodyguards. Ethan watched Samantha's figure as she walked away and smirked coldly. "I'll visit the Quinn family soon. At Vanessa's birthday on December 21st, I'll make sure to deliver her a grand gift myself." "Look! Talking tough now that she's gone? The less capable a person is, the more he uses his mouth!" A passerby glanced at Ethan with disdain when he noticed his grim expression. But suddenly, the passersby were all stunned. A convoy of dozens of Rolls-Royces drove up from a distance and surrounded Ethan. The next moment, the doors of the Rolls-Royces swung open simultaneously, and hundreds of bodyguards dressed in black rushed out. Then, an elderly man with silver hair stepped out from the Phantom in the center, leaning on a jeweled cane. The elderly man exuded an impressive and authoritative presence, clearly accustomed to a position of power. With the support of a young woman, he approached Ethan with a solemn expression. Then, he knelt on one knee in front of Ethan and said, "This is the Patriarch of the Chapman family from the capital's political family. I pay my respect to you, the King of Hell!" As the elderly man knelt, hundreds of black-clad bodyguards bowed deeply to Ethan, their voices booming in unison, "We beg you, the King of Hell, to come to the Chapman family's aid!"
