~VORIDIAN~ I felt it—the aching pain in my leg. The connection between us wasn't supposed to be this strong, not before mating. But I felt it the instant the wolf attacked and bit her. I winced, trying to hide it, but the pain spread across my leg and up to my thigh. “Voridian,” Nightfire, my lycan, called out. “Are you going to let her suffer like that?” I opened my eyes, frowning as I saw Elowen standing, pointing fingers at the wolves surrounding her, ready to strike. I couldn’t believe that, in such a state, she still wanted to fight. What a stubborn human, I thought as I watched her evade a wolf’s attack and start screaming at them. I wanted to laugh at her foolishness for yelling at the werewolves instead of fighting them, but I knew I couldn’t. Except for my beta, I didn’t want anyone finding out about her, especially not the daughter of one of the council members who held high authority in the court. The woman was my supposed mate, part of a marriage alliance I didn’t want but had no choice but to accept. I needed stronger alliances to increase my powers as the alpha king, and Illyana, the daughter of an influential council member, was the one who could fill the space. I didn’t believe in love and wasn’t looking forward to a loving marriage. All I wanted was a submissive partner who would bear my children and continue my empire, and Illyana was the perfect choice. “What is that human doing?” Illyana shouted beside me. She sounded frustrated, just like everyone else who wanted Elowen to die. I looked at her and suddenly found myself comparing her to Elowen. They were both beautiful women with different personalities. Illyana seemed composed and acted like royalty, but in the short time I had known Elowen, I figured she was loud and had a persistent attitude. Another pain hit me hard in the stomach, and I groaned, catching Illyana’s attention. She gently placed her hand on my shoulder. “Are you alright?” she asked, but it made things worse because she was not my mate, and my body rejected her touch. “Alpha king, are you…” I slapped her hand away and stood up from the chair, struggling to breathe. The mate bond was not supposed to have this great effect on me. If I could feel her pain from this distance, I wondered how it would feel once I was ready to reject her as my mate. It would be a hundredfold and could make me violent or even drive me insane. I had to save her for now and find a way to rid myself of how my body was reacting to her. Clenching my fists, I looked around until my eyes landed on one of the archers behind me. I grabbed their bow and arrows. “Alpha king…” The archer tried to speak, but I was already aiming one of the arrows at the werewolves. With shaking fingers, I fired at the wolf holding her leg, hitting it in the stomach. An uproar erupted in the arena, and I heard the werewolves' multiple screams, shocked that I had saved a human's life. I fired another arrow at the wolf, going for Elowen’s hand, and continued firing until all the wolves around Elowen dropped dead. An ordinary arrow wouldn’t have killed them so easily, but these arrows, laced with wolfsbane, could kill an average wolf in minutes if a physician did not intervene. “Karius,” I called for my beta through our mind link. He looked towards me and nodded. “Stop the attack.” Karius gave me a questioning look before nodding and walking toward the center of the arena. “Your Highness,” Illyana’s soft voice sounded beside me as I sat. “Is everything alright?” I didn’t look at her; I just nodded and turned back to Elowen, still lying on the ground. The werewolves' voices echoed in the arena, displeased. They all wanted her dead, and I would have been happy to oblige if only the woman everyone wanted dead wasn’t my mate. “Oh!” The announcer’s voice sounded through the speakers. “The alpha king has decided to pardon the princess of the humans by letting her go!” More uproars sounded in the arena, but I ignored them, allowing the snarls and growls to fade into the background as I watched Elowen stand. The way she brushed the dirt and debris off her body made me feel a sudden jolt of heat between my legs. My eyes, not leaving her, did things to me, and when she looked at me, I felt my c**k stir with excitement. That shouldn’t be happening, I thought. The woman standing before me was supposed to be my enemy; my body shouldn’t feel this way towards her. But I couldn’t ignore the sensation I felt just by staring at her, the way my c**k strained against my pants, begging to be released, and the way my heart raced at the sight of her beautiful figure. I believed I was already going crazy. If I could get excited just by staring at her from afar, I wondered how I would feel when she was near me. “Hey, is everything alright with you?” Illyana’s voice sounded again beside me, and I had forgotten she was there. “You’ve been acting weird all day. Is…” “I am fine,” I responded harshly, not wanting to hear her voice, but she persisted as I expected. “Did I do something wrong?” she asked. I got up from the chair. “Illyana, I think the game is finished now, so you can head back,” I told her, focusing my eyes on Elowen again. But she was no longer there, being pulled away by the royal guards. “Should I visit you tonight to discuss the wedding?” I shook my head. “No,” I said coldly, tired of talking and wanting to escape Illyana more than anything. She had no reason to visit me because I had clarified that I wanted nothing to do with her. Her duty was to stand beside me as my Luna queen and bear my children. The attention she wanted would not be given to her. “How long are you going to make me wait? Is it until the wedding? We have to plan this together and…” I groaned in frustration, rubbing my forehead. When I turned to face her, my eyes narrowed into thin slits. The anger simmering beneath the surface boiled over, filling my gaze with a vicious intensity. “I believe you heard me, Illyana. I don’t like repeating myself. There will be no visiting,” I moved closer, and she stepped back. “And I want you to stop asking about the wedding plan because I will never Plan it with you,” I whispered into her ear and started walking away, as I always did. So far, I have only been interested in the human princess because she is my mate, or so I thought.
