Wendy POV
"Y-your wife?" I stuttered with eyes big as saucers.
What the f**k?! Since when does he have a wife? I have not read anything about it and then I have still done my research on the two brothers. The company, too, of course. I've read hundreds of articles about everything from the currency exchange to their dating. There is no way I could have missed such an important detail as the elder brother would have a wife. Given that I even found that they have a younger brother who is only one year older than me, he is almost unknown in the corporate world though. I am precise when it comes to gathering information on a specific topic and now that it was about my workplace, I was more thorough than usual. Although I was attracted to Damien, there is nothing I would ever admit neither to myself nor to anyone else. It's just too embarrassing. In addition, it would significantly affect our working climate. Given that it violates the corporate policy. Like many other companies, it was forbidden for employees to have a relationship with each other. Especially when it was about a relationship between a superior and an ordinary employee. And I have no desire of being fired for being careless.
"It's a really long and boring story, trust me, you don't want to know." he sighed while rubbing his face.
For some reason, this made me cold inside. My face was expressionless and, well yeah, cold. I have no idea why this bothered me so much, but clearly it did.
"I understand, Mr.Winston." I answered politely like I should towards my boss.
He twitched at my response. It was obvious that he didn't like my answer, not one bit. He brushed it off and tried to remain casual about it. He had a strained look on his face, I guess it was supposed to be a smile, but it looks more like someone's choking him.
"That's good. Ms.Colton." he answered with the same politeness like I did, even though it was extremely strained.
The atmosphere got awkward very quickly after that. Thank god, my phone rang and saved me from the awkwardness. I looked at the display and smiled when I saw that it was my mother. We didn't have a good relationship and she was always very hard on me. Still I was happy every time she called and prayed that she wouldn't scold me.
"Hello mom." I answered happily.
"Wendy. Have you changed jobs yet? You know I don't accept you working at the café." she said with a cold voice as usual, what did I expect?
I cringed at her words, I tried furiously to lower the volume so that the others would not hear what was said. Instead, I managed to turn on the speaker and locked the phone... I sighed, well now they would hear it either way.
"Yes mom, I changed my job."
"That's good then. What are you going to do now? Wipe old people in the ass?"
"No mom, I'm going to work as an assistant at the Winston corp."
"Oh darling, no! How can you undermine yourself that way? We didn't raise you by taking orders from others.you're supposed to give orders. Why can't you be more like your cousin, Cassie, huh? She's doing great, listening to her mother."
I was on the urge of crying. This was typical for my mom. Nothing I did never was enough. Both she and dad always compared me to Cassie. They always made me feel small...
"There's nothing wrong with this job, mom. I get a good salary and work with people I respect, isn't that the most important thing?"
"No, it's not! What respect? You're not there to make friends, Wendy! No one has respect in this business and you will dig your own grave by behaving like you do."
"And what do you mean by that?" I said with a wobbling voice. My eyes held unshed tears.
"You need to learn not to trust other people. They're vultures every one of them. Your boss will not respect you in the end, whatever you try to persuade yourself. Why do you think we didn't allow you to take over the family business as you was supposed to? Instead of continuing to study, you were stupid enough to get pregnant and then make the disastrous choice not to have an abortion! When did you get this stupid, Wendy? If you want to survive in this world, take my advice. Be anyone, except yourself, because no one will like you. Your stupidity once again reminds me that you are the c*m I should have swallowed. The day you entered our lives, you ruined everything." she said and hung up on the phone.
I stared at the phone in my hand. The tears were falling freely at my cheeks. I didn't say a word, embarrassed over the fact that both Jaxon and Damien heard what she said to me.
"Damn, that's cold." Jaxon said in an attempt to lighten the mood. He immediately stops when I look up at him and he sees my tears. I wiped my face and sniffed.
"It's alright, I'm used to it. She's been like this for as long as I can remember. She's a cold hearted person. I'm never good enough and the only thing she cares about is that I should be on the top of the corporate ladder, nothing less and nothing more." I answered with a broken voice.
"We know what that's like." Damien answered with a serious voice.
"How come?"
"Our father was exactly the same. A cold person who did not care about other people's feelings or limitations. Everything was about power and money for him. It was also that way he forced me into the marriage with Laura, who is quite the same as him. She wanted a part of business, money and power, in exchange she agreed to marry me. I only agreed to marry her because it was the only way into the company for me. We played the happy family for years until he died and I took over the position as CEO. However, now I can not divorce her because she refuses to sign the divorce papers. My lawyer found a loophole out of our marriage and she wouldn't get a buck from me. She is aware of this and therefore also refuses to sign them."
"That's horrible! How can she do something like that?! You should not have to continue being married to someone that doesn't love you. She takes the oppurtunity to actually find that special someone from you. Because, no offence, but no woman in this whole universe would be together as a couple with a married man. Not if she loves him for real, that's just facts."
"It's nice of you to care about me, but I'm okay. I will get out of this someday." he said with a sad smile on his lips. An idea struck me like lighting. I smirked like a villain.
"What's going on inside that pretty little head of yours?" Jaxon asked with a big smirk of his own.
"If I get Laura to sign those papers, will you assign me as the new CFO?" I asked confidentily.
Jaxon laughed at my proposal. Damien looked at me like I had come back from the dead.
"You're not going to make it, Wendy." Damien said with a sad face.
"But if I do, will I get the promotion?"
"If you accomplish this, I will make you part owner of the whole company."
"Cool, we have a deal." I said and shaked his hand. "Give me two weeks and she's out."
"How do you plan to do this if I may ask?"
"Well, you have to be helping me a little."
"How?"
"Oh, you will see and you will understand soon enough." I answered with a smirk and a wink. Jaxon laughed so hard he had to clutch his side.
*
Monday morning came faster than expected. I'm waiting for my cab down the street. Damien had to go to work earlier and Jaxon had gone home after Saturday. A black BMW rolled in front of me. The driver rolled down the window and shouted to me:
"Excuse me, are you Wendy?"
"Um, yes I am." I answered hesitantly.
"Mr.Winston asked me to pick you up. I'm your assigned chauffeur this morning."
He got out of the drivers seat and walked around the car. He opened the back door and let me slide in to my seat. He closed the door behind me and jumped in the car. It was silent for a minute while we drove towards my new workplace.
"Ms.Colton, if I may be so bold to ask a question?"
"Certainly, Mr?"
"Oh no, George is fine, really."
"Nice to meet you, George."
"Likewise young miss. I was just wondering how you know Mr.Winston?"
"I'm his new personal assistant." I answered proudly with a big smile.
"That's wonderful!"
"What is?"
"Mr.Winston's personal assistant get one chauffeur to pick them up and drive them home. I thought this was only for the day, but it looks like we're going to spend some time together." he answered and smiled at me in rearview mirror.
"And why is that wonderful? I'm sure there's more important people you would like to drive and talk to. I'm no one special." I said and looked at my hands.
"That right there is the reason why it's wonderful! You're humble and nice. Not the usual "get me there, do that, hurry". You're just plain polite and that's something everyone in the service business would be happy to have."
"Oh, I see. Well, I'm pregnant so I can be rude and cranky sometimes..."
"That's fine. I'm very good with people. We're going to get along just fine."
I smiled at that and for the first time in my life, it felt like everything was going to be alright in the end. People respected me here. It was no longer the pessimism around me. It was respect, smiles and polite answers. I could really get used to this.
"We're here Ms.Colton."
"Thank you, George. Have a nice day!" I said and climbed out of the car.
"The same to you Ms.Colton!"
He drove off and I moved towards the main entrance. Shiny floors as long as the eye can see. I walked up to the reception.
"Hello, my name is Wendy Colton. I'm starting my first day of the job as Mr.Winston's assistant."
The young woman in the reception searched on her computer.
"That's right, I can see your name here. May I please see your identification so I can make sure that you are who you say?"
"Of course." I answered and picked out my card.
She looked it over and scanned it. A minute later she passed me my card and my ID tag.
"There you go. As you probably already know, you can't get into the building and move freely if you don't have your tag with you. Therefore, it is very important not to forget it before the start of the working day. The only one who allow your admission if you don't have the tag with you is the CEO."
"Okay, thank you very much. Have a nice day!" I said and waved at her before walking towards the elevator. I scanned the tag and walked inside. I never liked elevators but there was no way in hell that I would take the stairs up to the 67th floor. The doors opened and I walked towards the big doors at the end of the hall. To get some bonus points, I decided to fix a cup of coffee to my new boss. There was a small kitchen right next to my desk where you could get some snacks or a cup of coffee if you needed. While the coffee was finishing, I looked over the folder that was on my desk. Those were the numbers I was going to go through. Since math was my strong subject at school, it didn't take long for me to find the error in the report. I marked the error with a red pen before I brought the folder, poured a cup of coffee and walked towards Damien's office. I knocked twice and waited.
"Come in." his voiced boomed behind the door.
I opened the door and greeted my boss.
"Good morning, Mr.Winston. I have your coffee and the report you asked for right here." I said and put the cup down beside him on his desk. I opened the folder and pointed at the error of numbers. "It says right here that you're supposed to pay 300.000 dollars for these products, but when I counted, the number should be about 175.000. If you need me to, I can take this down to the economy divison."
He didn't say a word. Eyes big as saucers and his mouth open.
"Sir?" I asked hesitantly, worried if I did something wrong. He shaked his head.
"I'm sorry, you baffled me completely. You can't have been here more than twenty minutes and you already have found out something important and made me my coffee just how I liked it. How did you know?"
"I made your coffee at home this weekend, remember?" I asked, letting my professionalism slip a bit, smiling.
He was about to answer when the door opened without the person knocking. In walks a tall blonde woman with unnatural lips. She looked like a real snake. Someone who probably would choke you in your sleep or throw a stiletto shoe at the back of your head when you weren't looking. With other words, she didn't play nice, dirty tricks.
"Oh baby, there you are. I've been looking all over for you." she cooed at Damien.
"What are you doing here?" he asked her in an angry voice.
She ignored him completely and turned towards me.
"And who are you?" she snarled.
"I'm Wendy."
"Ah, the assistent." she spitted the words like I was some kind of prostitute.
"And who are you if I may ask?" I tried to ask as politely as possible.
She smirked at me.
"I'm Damien's wife."
