Avalon grew up with his mom because his father hid to protect him. He doesn’t want people to doubt his identity so Avalon can live a normal life. There were times that Avalon would get sick and he wondered what his mom would ask him to drink. It looked like blood but tasted sweet. And after a while, he would feel better. “Mom, what was it that you gave me last night?” “Why?” “It tasted like blood but sweet.” “Have you tasted blood ever?” “Well, there was a time that I hurt myself. My wound bled and I sucked it.” “Why did you?” “I didn’t, it was like I wanted it to stop so I placed my mouth on it.” “It’s beetroot.” “We can do it at the same time...one of these days.” His father, Alfredo doesn’t want Avalon playing on the streets, especially at night time. He feared that his species might smell Avalon and know that he is a dhampyre. “Avalon, I do not want you playing outside. Am I clear?” “Yes, Dad.” But peers and playmates would always call Avalon to play with them. They sometimes call him just to jam with guitars and sing songs. He would at times avoid them and just watch TV at home. But there are times that he is tempted and he would ask his mom for permission. In his perseverance. “I will permit you, but as soon as your father’s car comes, be sure to run inside so you won’t get caught.” “Yes, mommy.” One day, Avalon and his friends were playing hide and seek. While he was hiding, his father came and he didn’t realize until his friend told him that he saw his father’s car pass by. When he got home, he slowly went inside but he caught the stern look of his father Alfredo. “Where did you come from Avalon?” In fear, he did not answer him. “Avalon, I am talking to you! Where did you come from?” He still did not answer. In anger, his father, Alfredo packed some of his things and asked him to ride the car. In fear Avalon followed but he was not saying a word. Tears of fear swelled in his eyes. They drove and went to a dark place. Only lights of cars that pass by were the only glow you can see. On the side of the road, his father parked the car. “Grad your bag and go down Avalon.” Avalon was crying while he took his bag and went out of the car. “Sit there.” His father pointed a stump by the side of the road that he would sit on. And his father left him all alone in the dark of nowhere. Avalon placed his bag near his chest in fear of the surrounding, he cannot see if there were ants beneath or mosquitoes. Will there be snakes or bad people to get him. He cried in solitude, he sobbed in fear and anger. Thirty minutes passed but it was the longest half hour that Avalon ever experienced. Cars pass by him. He wanted to walk home but he doesn’t know where. He pitied himself being alone and no one to turn to. Then a light in the dark beamed through the road. He thought it was another vehicle to pass by, then it stopped in front of him and the door opened. It’s Alfredo, his father. “Stand up and ride the car.” And Avalon did as he was told. He sobbed while he sat at the passenger side. “If you ever do that again, there would come a time that I won’t come back for you again.” Avalon was angry inside. He doesn’t know if he wants to punch his father or just sit and hate him inside. He is just a well-mannered child that he kept his pain inside. When he got home, and his father left. His mother embraced him as she saw him and he cried heavily while he hugged his mother tight. He missed his mother so much, he doesn’t want to let go of her. He cried until he was tired and easily slept. Angela, his mom embraced his son while he slept. She pitied him. She wanted to tell him all about his life and who he is, but she composed herself for the benefit of his son. Avalon pretended to forget what happened and concentrated on studying and helping his mom with all her work. His mom is a very good cook and a caterer to big companies. “What is that mom?” “This is beetroot juice, another kind than what I always give you when you’re sick.” “Okay.” “Would you like to have some?” “No. I just want to hang around with you.” “Are you okay?” “Yeah, I guess.” “Would you like to visit your father?” “But I just woke up.” “Bring him some juice and breakfast in his office.” “Okay.” Avalon, wearing his shorts and long sleeved-shirt went to his father on a bike. As he pedaled, the chain broke and messed his legs with grease. He tried to fix it but he wasn’t able to so he walks the bike to his father’s office. He was grimy and perspiring when he reached his office. When he reached the lift, he realized he would ride the same lift with his father. He got excited and tried to greet him with a kiss. But his father shoved him aside. “Why are you here wearing like that?” “My bike broke.” “Go home now.” But he remembered the food that he brought for his father, maybe he will be glad that he brought him breakfast. So he waited outside of his office room. He told the secretary that he would wait for his father and the secretary told Alfredo that Avalon os outside. But no father showed up. So he just left the food and went home. He asked himself. Does he realize that I didn’t eat breakfast yet just to bring him some? He didn’t even ask how I was. I walked a mile because my bike broke, and I have to walk again to go home. When he came home. “Did you see your father?” “Yes.” “Did he liked the food?” “I am not sure.” Avalanche n wanted to tell his mom what happened but he loves his mom so much he doesn’t want to hurt her feelings anymore. As the years pass, Avalon became stronger and more capable of so many things, but he still doesn’t know his true identity. He graduated high school and his father was not there to celebrate with him. He graduated college and his father wasn’t there as well. He realized he doesn’t need his father to live. Then he applied to a big company after college and he was immediately hired. He rose from the ranks to one of the Vice Presidents of the company. When he got famous and more with power. His mother, Angela, called him. “Yes, mother, are you okay?” “Oh yes, I am. I just want us to talk about something.” “What is it about?” “You have grown to be a responsible man and I am so proud of you.” And he smiled “You disciplined yourself so well and you have reached where you are without help from anybody.” “I got help from you. You encourage me every day. You took care of me.” “And I will still care for you. But I have to tell you something.” And he looked at her. “You are grown and mature now, and can fully understand things. You see, we are not the same.” “What do you mean?” “I mean....” “Did you adopt me? Who are my parents?” “You are my own. Have you ever wondered why you feel sick even you don’t have colds or coughs? Have you ever wondered why you feel week at times? Why your skin is different from mine?” And he looked at him quizzically. “When your father and I got married and I got pregnant with you, that was the only time he told me that he is a dhampyre.” “What do you mean?” “Yes, Avalon you have a blood of a vampire. Your father is a half-vampire.” “And it was blood that you made me drink?” And his mother nodded. “How....” “How what?” “Why am I not afraid of sunlight? Garlic?” “We trained you since you were a baby to resist the sun.” “Garlic?” “You got used to it.” “How will I .....?” “How will you what?” “Never mind mother. I hate my father, he wasn’t there. I hate him.” And he looked at his shoes and shook his head slowly in disbelief. He couldn’t fathom what his mother explained. His mind can not process all that he has heard.
