/Ezra’s POV/
I inhaled deeply the fresh scent of the forest as I stood with my hands folded while I waited for my Alpha, Alexander to finish up his meeting with the warlock of the west.
I am a Beta of the Silver Knight pack and a Beta to Alexander Hubert, son of Rowen Hubert. Alexander and I used to be very close until he lost his mother since then, he changed...our pack isn’t the largest, nor was it the smallest, we are an average pack with 9000 pack members and still counting, Alpha Rowen died a few days back in a rogue attack and Alexander had to take up the position of the Alpha but I wish he would open up more often, ever since his father died he’s been working on expanding the pack, I wish he finds his mate soon, maybe he’ll soften up a little bit, he was the type of person with an extremely cold exterior but cared deeply for his pack, the love for his pack was unrivaled, he might not be the greatest friend but he’s a great Alpha who cared deeply for his people, the main reason why I would lay my life down for him if I have to.
One thing though, he had been keeping a few things from me recently, for the safety of the pack, he never keeps things from me and keep me informed on all his plans but for the past few days he has been kind of discrete, and it more surprising because he also didn’t tell me about his meeting with the warlock until we got here, werewolves and witches have not been in contact…from our sides at least; since the great war with the Crescent wolves, I have a feeling whatever reason is for Alex to be meeting up with a warlock, it’s not a good one. He walked out of the cabin bending his head a little as he made his way out of the door which was too short for his 6’2 frame. His broad shoulders were hugged tightly by the black vest he had under his jean jacket.
“How did it go?” I asked though I still have no idea what they were discussing.
“We have to take a trip to New York, then Los Angeles afterward” He replied indifferently.
“You wanna tell me what all this is about?” I quirked a brow expecting him to say something but he just sighed, looked into my eyes, and shook his head. I throw my hands up feeling frustrated, we are not the best buddies but we are still friends and the least I expected from him was this.
“Alex, I am your beta and for goodness sake, treat me like one, I followed you all the way from Malibu to Beverly hills without asking you a single question because you claimed it wasn’t the time to tell me yet, I undoubtedly followed you alone…without question and now we are going to New York, and then Los Angeles, do you really expect me not to ask questions while we leave the pack vulnerable like that-
“Tristan is there” He retorted, Yeah…Tristan is his younger brother, an Alpha by blood too and I’m sure he’s competent enough to keep the pack safe until our arrival but I’m still worried.
“Don’t worry too much about the pack, your father is back there…my brother is as well, everything is going to be fine but this is an errand I need to run with my most trusted member-
“I don’t feel that way” I arched a brow, I’m a sarcastic person by nature and I’m termed unserious by many, and truth be told, I’m only serious just three to four times a week, and right now is one of them.
“Look, I understand you wanting to know the reason we are so far from home but you have to trust me on this Ezra-
“What about you? Do you trust me?” I asked, my brows furrowed as I met his eyes which had a rather frustrating gleam in them.
“Of course I trust you-
“Then why the heck will you not tell me anything?” I didn’t hide my annoyance, of course, I rarely get pissed but I hate myself anytime that happened.
“It’s not because I don’t want to tell you, it’s because it’s not the time yet…trust me, please” My eyes bulged at his statement, I can’t remember the last time he said please…he was always this prideful prick that put himself first.
“Um, o…okay” I faltered, cleared my throat, and tried to recall everything I overhead the warlock and Alex talking about, but I suddenly couldn’t remember, I know it’s about a strange prophesy though but why can’t I remember, I clearly had it in my head.
“Is something wrong?” He noticed my change in expression and asked.
“Nothing” I muttered but was feeling strange for some reason, I have a very good memory, and forgetting something I just learn a few minutes ago is scary.
“Are you sure you’re okay?”He asked me as we turned to walk down the ridge and into the narrow pathway that lead out of the forest where the meet-up cabin was, our jeep was left at the road since the pathway was too narrow for us to drive through.
“Yeah, don’t worry about it” I shrugged following him while adjusting the long jean jacket that I had over my cream hoodie.
“I hope we won’t be getting into any trouble though” I muttered and he nodded in agreement.
“This was my dad’s last wish…I just want to fulfill it for him-
“I was there when your dad died…he didn’t-” I paused but he just smiled.
“He knew that day will come, Ezra, he has prepared for it” He scoffed his eyes turning glossy.
“Um, okay” I muttered still confused as hell but I decided not to press him any further.
Our flight to New York wasn’t exactly fun, I hate flights, I have the fear of heights and I almost fainted before we landed, everyone always wondered how a werewolf-like me was scared of heights, well…I don’t know either, everyone sure has their fear of something.
“Are you okay?-
“You’re asking me that question too much, I should be worried about it” I muttered, groaning uncomfortably in my seat as we adjusted in the new sedan that was delivered at the airport, I think Alex must have rented it online.
“You look like you’re hangover-” He briefly took his eyes off the road and rested them on me.
“That’s how flight is for me” I groaned adjusting in my seat again. I rested back in the car seat and tried to get some rest because I could hardly think. We arrived at the hotel he booked some minutes later and remain quiet as we make our way to the counter, I normally used to be in charge of all of these things, booking, lodging, driving, after all, I am the beta, it was my duty but this time, his pride aside he was willing to do everything, this must be really important to him. When I finally get to the room he booked for us, I slept like a baby, I didn’t even have the time to take in the breathtaking view of the city made obvious from the huge window, I just rushed to the bathroom, have a proper bath and fall to the birth, it’s been a long day…we’ve been traveling around since yesterday, it was seven in the evening when I finally get to feel the softness of the bed.
“Um”, I moaned in my sleep as I rolled around while hearing some faint discussion going on.
“Yes”, Alex said, he seems to be on call, I wonder with who.
“No, not at all. I’m doing all I can, but I can’t just shake this uncomfortable feeling off that something is going to go wrong” He heaved heavily.
“No, not yet…but why can’t I tell him now?” He asked whoever was on the phone and I frowned.
“Are you even sure that damn prophecy is real uncle? What if it isn’t…I don’t believe those cunning magic practitioners” Alex said exasperatedly, but I got something from his information though, he was talking to his uncle and there was only one uncle I am familiar with…Uncle Landon.
“Yes, I’m about to go and meet her, are you sure she’ll have answers?” He sighed again. “Okay” He concluded the call and started heading away but I jumped from the bed and his receding footsteps stopped and as he turned, I was right in front of him.
“Oh”, He jolted surprised by my sudden presence.
“Were you about to go somewhere and leave me?” I frowned.
“I am meeting up with a friend at a bar, I won’t stay long, it’s late anyway” I raced back to grab my phone to check the time, it was some minutes past 8.
“Just get some rest, I’ll be back as soon as I can-
“No won’t do…I’m coming with you” I declared grabbing my jacket from the disheveled bed and immediately slipping it on.
“You’re really not going to listen are you?” He asked with a tired look on his face. I doubt he’s had any rest since we arrived in New York.
“Yes, since you said it’s a bar, we might as well get some drinks” I patted his shoulder and headed towards the direction of the door, bringing my attention to the room for the first time, it was elegant, a single room with so much to speak for, I smile exiting the room to realize that our room number was 603. Alex’s phone dinged and he raised it to look…
“She sent me the address” We should get going, after that, I spent my time ogling at the interior and the design of the hotel, gracious…it was so majestic, the place looks so damn expensive, I thought staring at the crystal chandeliers, then the well-coordinated employees, the furniture, the lounge decorations, wow. After pushing the door and leaving the hotel, we caught a cab…This is my third time being in New York, feels like a whole new planet. The ride from the hotel to the bar was 30mins, how sick! I thought feeling ecstatic for some reason…I just didn’t have any idea it was because I’ll be meeting my mate.
I’m 26, yeah…it’s crazy that I haven’t met my mate yet but completely normal…many people get their mates late because our perfect match might not even be in the same continent that we are in.
“Damn!” I muttered the moment I walked into the noisy club which also seems to be a specialized bar, there were people on the dance floor, the Dj was mixing loud beat songs, and the air as seems to be filled with nothing more than alcohol, sweat, and lust, but…Alex grabbed me by my shoulder and led me up to climb up some times, I wasn’t concentrating at all on his actions, I was carried away by the view of the people dancing from the second floor, it was so captivating but suddenly my wolf growl in my head, then this scent…cherry mixed with an incredibly unknown scent but was great nevertheless.
“Ezra, let’s go…I have someone to meet up” Alex tugged at the hand of my jacket but I wasn’t responsive.
“Ezra!”
“My mate-
“What?” He wore a deep frown.
“My mate, she’s here” He gave me a crestfallen look at my declaration.
“She’s here…I have to find her” It was the only thing on my mind as I started following the scent until it led me to the most gorgeous lady I’ve ever met in my entire life, her dark hair, brown eyes…and her voice when she talked, I lost my thinking. Alex growled next to me but I don’t care…my wolf was jumping when I touched her after having a customer, bartender conversation.
“Mate!” We muttered at the same time but to my surprise…she suddenly bolted away and race out on me leaving me and Alex puzzled.
