Chapter 7 - On The Road

"Do you really believe her, Maddie?" Chrys asked as he follows behind me. We are currently walking in the forest and following the map that is given by the witch, or as she claims. "What? Did I ever say that I believed her?" I asked him and looked at the map which I don't quite understand. It's like a diamond-shaped thingy. Everything around is a forest. She said that we have to go first to another witch's house in the south and we will spend the night there. Then, by tomorrow we will head to the east, and finally, to the north and to the middle in which lies the palace of Sadonia. This is not making sense at all. Maybe this Sadonia place is the city. "You promised her that you will go to the palace and will save Sadonia from the dragon." He stated and I just looked at him boringly. "Chrys, do you believe in dragons?" I asked him and we stopped for a while to rest. I think we have been walking for an hour already. "Well, yeah. People say they exist a long time ago. There are lots of movies and stories about them." He answered and I took out the bread from the basket that Mrs. Parros gave us. "Now, do you believe in time travel?" I asked him again and I examined the bread to see if it is edible. What if she has put poison in it, or spells? "Uh... It was not really proven, but in movies, there are a lot of time travels." He answered and his eyes went wide when I took a bite from the bread that the witch gave. Then, he quickly grabbed it from my hold and threw it away. "What's your problem, Dude? Aren't you hungry?" I asked him and he shook his head vigorously. "No, you are not supposed to eat that. She could've put something in it." He said and I just sighed. I'm so hungry. "And, what should we eat then?" I asked him and he looked around. Then, he found a fruit from a tree and it's my turn to shake my head. "No, that could be poisonous. The bread is better. If you don't want to eat, then just don't. Because... me? I don't want to starve myself." I stated and picked the other bread then ate it. He just stared at me in disbelief. I just don't wanna die out of hunger here. "Do you think that we are trapped in the past?" He asked and here we go again. Can't he just cut off the topic about the impossible things? "No. Could we just stop talking about those bullshit things that the witch lady said? It's not true, and we are going home. I just said that I believe her, so she will let us go. She's crazy, Chrys." I ranted and stood up. I'm a little bit mad now. Then, he just sighed and I guess he's tired. I'm tired too but we should keep going. "I'm tired and I'm hungry." He let out and I looked at the map. She said that we should go south and there we could find a road and we will find a house on a wheat farm. I hope that they have a phone there or they knew where is the way back to the city. And I also hope that they're not witches. --- "Damn it, I'm so thirsty." He cursed and I handed him the basket that the witch gave. I think we've been walking on the dusty and rocky road for hours now and the sun is about to set. "No, I will not put any of those witch-given things in my system." He declined and I just shrugged. Then, I grabbed the very old-looking water container and drank from it, finishing all its contents. His mouth dropped to the ground and a look of disgust is painted on his face. "I just can't believe you. How can you take up all of those? You're not afraid to die? She could've put poison in it." He asked and I just flashed a smile. "Have you seen me dead?" I asked him and I burped. Now, I think I could walk another mile. "You're impossible." He muttered and his stomach growled. "Listen up, Chrys. She would never do that. You know why? Because we are the Heroes of Sadonia. Why would she kill us if we will be the one to save their kingdom from the last dragon?" I said with full of emotions and he just rolled his eyes. He's just starving himself. It will not be my fault if he will die. "Hmm. You know what, you got a point. You are really smart. Now, let me have some of those." He finally said and I handed him the basket. And, he frowned as he opened it. "There's nothing left?" He asked in disbelief. Of course. "Yeah. You threw the other bread and you said that you won't take up any of those witch-given things in your system." I said and just kept walking and leaving him behind. "Alright. Fair enough. But later on, you will be carrying my unconscious body if I pass out." He said and I looked back at him. "Hmm. Will not. It's not my fault that you are starving." I replied and he's just shaking his head out of frustration. We kept walking and the sun is about to set in the west. Damn it, we should find that house or anything valuable in our situation. I miss my bed already. During this time of the day, Mom would be cooking and she will call me on the phone for dinner. I should have brought my phone with me all the time. Well, no one warned me about this expedition, so, I have to be contented with what we can do and what is available around here. --- "Maddie, isn't this a wheat farm? Look at the map. There could be a house here somewhere around." He said excitedly and we looked at it. It could be somewhere right in the middle near an apple tree. "Do you see any apple tree?" I asked him and he looked around the farm. "There, in the middle. There's a tree but…. there's no house." He stated and he's right, there's no house in there. Could the witch be just fooling us? Damn, we should not have trusted her. "Yeah. Let's go to the tree." I stated and he stopped me by holding my arm. What's wrong with this man always stopping all my plans? "That would be a waste of time. It's almost dark and we have not found any house or the way back to the city. And, I could die in hunger at any time soon." He said and I didn't listen to him. It's like something in me that wants to go there. "Maybe we could find some fruits to eat. Aren't you hungry?" I asked and his face lit up. Then, he finally stopped complaining and just walked behind me. I wonder why there is a passage that leads to the middle of the farm and the apple tree, but there's no house near here. This is a bit creepy. But thankfully, they don't have scarecrows around here. We finally reached the tree and we looked up trying to find some fruit from it. "There." He pointed and it is at the second branch of the tree. "Can you climb it?" I asked him and he tried to hug the trunk of the tree. Seriously? He doesn't know how to climb a f*****g tree? "Chrys, kindly get away from that tree now before I kill you," I let out while chuckling and he breathed deeply. He's tired from that situation? Well, maybe he's just hungry. "Bend for me," I commanded him and he's seemed puzzled. I showed him how to do it and he finally gets it. "Ready. Be strong." I said and ran a small distance and jumped on his back and finally getting a hold of the first branch of the tree. Then, I lift myself and sat on the branch. "How can you do that?" He said in awe and clapped his hands. "Well, according to the theory of Charles Darwin, humans evolved from monkeys," I answered and we just laughed. That's hilarious. I went to the second branch, and finally, getting the only fruit of the tree. And, as I got a hold of the fruit, my companion just screamed. A high pitched scream. Now, I wonder what had happened down there. "Hey, Chrys! What happened down there?" I asked him and he's looking somewhere that I can't see because the leaves and twigs of the tree are blocking my view. "Maddie, get down here. Quick!" He whispered scarily and I just jumped from the tree with the fruit on my other hand. As I landed on the ground, he immediately pulled me to hide behind the tree. He's going crazy. Now, what extraordinary things he have to tell me? "There was no house in here, right?" He asked nervously and I just stared at him in confusion. "Of course. We just came for the tree to find any fruit." I answered him and he pulled me to look in the direction that he was looking at earlier. "And, what the f**k is that?" He asked and my eyes went wide with my mouth dropped. "I swear, that was not there earlier. It just appeared." He said and I just nodded. Jeez, it makes all the hair on my body to stand. And, my heart beats fast and I breathed in deeply. That would be impossible. I am sure that it was not there earlier at all. "Is there anybody living there?" I asked him and we looked at the house closely. It's almost dark and he's about to scream again when we saw that something in the house lit up, but I covered his mouth with my hand. "That means one thing. Somebody is living there." I let out and I gave him the fruit and he handed it back to me like he's afraid of it. "What's the matter?" I asked him and he is panting. What's wrong with him? "When you picked the fruit earlier, that house showed up. That must be something else." He whispered and I stared at the fruit. "That's bullshit." I cursed and I looked back at the house. It really is a house that looked like a witch house too. Damn it, it's starting to scare the hell out of me. "Yeah. I guess we should start to believe Mrs. Wondi Parros." He stated and I stood up to go to the house. Then, he ran after me and pulled me back to the tree. "What do you think you're doing? Are you out of your mind?" He told me and I just closed my eyes out of frustration. Will he just stop stopping me? "We won't know if what she says is true if we won't ask them. Stay here if you're afraid." I said to him and he's shaking his head 'no'. "No, I'll come with you." He said and composed himself. I bet you, he won't stay because he's more afraid of being left here alone. Just a damn coward.
