Smoke… thick black smoke… the screams of people
Adelaide run!!!! You are the future of our pack!!!
Pain… so much pain…
I sat up with a gasp, my heart pounding wildly against my rib cage. I looked around, I was in the cell, I wasn't back at Silverstone. A soft sigh escaped my lips and I got to my feet, stepping over Liam who was sleeping on the floor. I turned on the tap and splashed some water on my face before staring at my reflection in the mirror.
Saying yes to Jacob was against everything I stood for. He might be my mate and my father had wronged him by performing the ritual but that didn't justify his actions. He could have simply gone to the other Alpha Primes and the matter would have been solved, instead he chose the bloody path.
I ran my fingers through my hair, hating how tired I looked. The nightmares were draining. I was thankful they didn't come as regularly as they once did, but that didn't make them any less frightening or real. Wrapping my arms around my body, I walked back to the bed, lying on the thin mattress, my eyes on the bars as my thoughts shifted to Uncle Pete. I felt bad leaving but I couldn't let Liam die or suffer for something that I had engineered. I ran a finger along my Silverstone ring, closing my eyes, drifting to a happier time.
******** ******** ********
"Good morning, I trust you slept well." The same man from before inquired as he came up to the cell door.
"What'd you think?" Liam asked, scowling at him, rubbing his sore neck.
The man turned to me, I had barely gotten enough sleep and wanted nothing more than to see myself back in Ridgeway Valley, asleep in my own bed
"My Alpha Prime requests your presence."
I let out a snort.
More like demands.
I got to my feet, straightening my wrinkled inner shirt. He glanced down at my attire and I could see the gears working within his mind as his lips parted.
"No, I will not change." I cut him off. He pressed his lips together before unlocking the door and standing aside.
Be careful Adelaide. Liam’s voice filled my head.
I will be.
I walked out and he closed the cell before leading me upstairs. Instead of making a turn towards the dining room, he took me to a different part of the house. He opened a set of double doors to reveal a conference room with a long table and several chairs arranged.
He led me across the room to another door, stopping and knocking before standing aside.
“The Alpha Prime is in.”
I opened the door, making my way into the large room. My attention was captured by the large window that offered an amazing view. The laughter of a lady made me glance in the other direction. The first thing I noticed was a barely covered butt facing me.
Uh…
She was leaning over his table, pointing out something to him on a piece of paper while trying to shove her cleavage in his face. A tendril of jealousy and possessiveness stirred within me and I violently stamped it down.
I cleared my throat making them turn to me. His eyes, cool, assessing me while the lady wrinkled her nose as if she smelt something bad, her lips curled up as she took in my appearance.
"You wanted to see me" I stated, ignoring the looks I was receiving from the brat.
"Olivia, please excuse us and tell your father that he has my approval." He instructed.
"Yes, thank you so much Jake." She purred, gathering the papers and hugging it to her chest, making her cleavage pop out more. I rolled my eyes.
Could she be more obvious?
She walked towards me, swaying her hips as she did, knocking into my shoulder before leaving the room, a scoff escaping my lips.
Fucking brat.
I turned to him, noticing the smirk on his lips. The bastard clearly enjoyed what had happened. He wouldn't be smiling when he downs a poisoned drink and dies.
"How did you sleep?" He inquired.
"Don't pretend like you care." I snapped.
"You really are Charles' daughter, hot headed and undiplomatic just like him."
"And you're just like your father, demented and delusional just like the rest of your bloodline." I snapped. The atmosphere in the room went cold, the red in his eyes more pronounced than ever. It became hard to breathe, almost as if he was manipulating the air in the room. Still, I stood my ground, refusing to show any fear.
"I'll advise you not to speak on things you don't have the knowledge on." He warned through clenched teeth.
"And I'll also advise you to keep my father's name out of your filthy mouth." I snapped. He glared at me and I glared back. He looked away, the atmosphere became less oppressive and I was able to breathe normally.
"Regarding last night, have you decided on the next course of action? Are we to hold a trial and an execution or will I have a Luna Prime?"
I swallowed hard and nodded.
"Yes, I'll be your Luna Prime."
The words tasted like defeat, bitter and wrong. He looked back at me.
"Excellent." He stated, moving to the shelf behind him. I watched as he brought out a wooden box and came towards me. "As my Luna, your allegiance will be with me and the Mont Blanc Protectorate."
I clenched my jaw, willing myself not to slug him as he spoke. He stopped in front of me, opening the box to reveal a simple gold signet ring.
The Mont Blanc monogram.
"I'm not wearing that." I whispered, not taking my eyes off it. It was one thing to agree to be his Luna, it was another thing to wear the Mont Blanc monogram after the pain he had caused me.
"We can either do this the easy way or the hard way, the choice is yours pet."
I glared at him, calming myself before I raised my hand. This was for Silverstone… Everything I was doing was for Silverstone.
"Get it over with."
He stepped forward, taking my hand, I stiffened when his fingers grazed my mine, shutting my eyes as he slid the ring on. It immediately felt like I was being electrocuted, a gasp escaped my lips and my eyes flew open. I forced myself not to fall to my knees as hundreds and thousands of connections from several packs surged through me trying to establish a connection.
Breathe, you’re stronger than this
I urged myself, closing my eyes yet it was overwhelming, more than when I had slid my father’s ring on. This was intense, soul searing even. It was as if I was being branded from the inside out as the Mont Blanc Luna. A whimper escaped my lips and I felt myself being led somewhere and gently pushed into a seat, a hand cupping my face.
“Breathe”
My eyes fluttered to see Jacob kneeling in front of me, barely any distance between us, I could feel the heat radiating from his body and my traitorous body was reacting to it. His eyes had flecks of red in them and it made them even more mesmerising. His hand was on my knee, close to mine. I looked at the ring on my finger before looking over at his ring.
The Alpha and Luna rings… they looked as if they had always belonged on our fingers from their inception.
Snap out of it Adelaide!
I cleared my throat, standing up and creating as much distance as I could between us while trying to regain my wits.
"And Liam?"
"I am a man of my word, your cousin is free to go." He replied. Relief filled my veins and I turned to leave.
"Not so fast."
I let out a sigh, rolling my eyes before turning back to him.
"What more could you possibly want?" I spat.
"As much as I find your little bouts of rebellion amusing, I will not tolerate any disrespect or insubordination to me." He stated. "You can fight me all you want in private but in public, we will be a united front, you will be the perfect Luna Prime."
My fingers itched to slap him instead I settled for a look of indifference.
"Why? Is it that you don't want your people to know that you couldn't secure your mate without resorting to blackmail?"
"So you do agree that you are my mate?" The smug expression on his face grating on my nerves.
"I admit nothing, Eda may have made you my mate, but you're nothing more than an enemy to me and I will take you down." I vowed. He took a step closer to me.
"Careful pet" He warned "If I go down then I will drag you to the deepest pit of hell with me."
His glare was piercing but I refused to back down. Jacob Mont Blanc would not intimidate me, not now, not in a million years.
"My Prime?"
A soft familiar voice had me glancing at the entrance. The same woman from the cell stood, her eyes darting from Jacob to me, wariness evident on her face.
"Delilah, you will be the Luna Prime's personal assistant. You will show her everything she needs to know about the lands and our traditions."
Her eyes widened and a flash of fear ran through her eyes as she glanced at me once more.
"I…" She trailed off before nodding. "As you wish Prime."
"Excellent, show her to the Prime Suite."
Wait… what?!
I parted my lips about to verbally eviscerate him when a thought popped into my mind.
The only way I could kill him was by getting close to him and that included living in the same quarters as him. I swallowed back the insults and turned to him. I could see he was waiting for my outburst though his eyes flashed menacingly that it wouldn't end well if I so much as uttered the wrong statement.
Instead I forced myself to smile at him, deriving satisfaction from seeing the shock wash over his features before turning to Delilah who looked like she would rather be anywhere than here.
"Lead the way."
I could feel his eyes on me as we left the office, the smile dropped off my lips and we walked in silence to the elevator. She glanced at me warily as she pressed the button to the top floor. I could smell the fear and nervousness.
The elevator doors opened and she stepped out, I followed suit, looking around. I had no expectation for what his lair would look like or maybe I expected a skull or a severed head yet it was rather plain, apart from his scent, nothing else showed that the space belonged to him.
"T…this way." She stuttered, leading me across the sitting room to a hall. She opened the door on the right and stood aside. I walked into the large spacious room, there was a four poster bed pushed to the wall, the curtains of the bed billowing softly as the wind from the open windows came into the room.
There was another door, so I crossed over and opened it to reveal the bathroom. Next to the bathroom was a set of closet doors. I furrowed my brows as I pulled the doors open to reveal a fully furnished closet.
"What the.. "
I turned to Delilah who looked as if she was about to pass out.
"I'm not going to kill you so can you please relax." I uttered, fed up with how rapid her heart was beating.
"Yes Luna." She whispered, I cringed at the title.
"Adelaide, just Adelaide will do."
"As you wish Ms Adelaide."
Well that's better than Luna
I glanced round the room once more before turning to her.
"Now that I've seen the room, I would like to see my cousin."
She parted her lips before closing them, a look of uncertainty in her eyes as she looked me over.
"I… uh…"
I sighed, realising I had truly frightened the poor girl in front of me while I was in the cell.
"It seems we have gotten off on the wrong foot and you being my assistant means we are going to be around each other a lot." I began walking up to her. I could see she was trying everything possible not to flinch or run away.
"So let's start all over. I'm Adelaide Silverstone and you are?" I inquired, holding out my hand. She swallowed hard and placed her trembling hand in mine.
"I- I'm Delilah Shaw." She replied. I smiled at her, shaking her hand.
"It's a pleasure to meet you."
"The pleasure is all mine Lu… Ms Adelaide." She uttered. I stepped back, shoving my hands into my pockets.
"Great, now that we have that out of the way, can you take me to my cousin?" I inquired.
"Of Course but I think you should maybe have a shower and change your attire…" She trailed off. I looked down at my clothes, I hated to admit it, I looked frumpy and unkempt yet a part of me wanted to march through his territory looking like that, a silent message of my unwillingness to his terms yet it would be counterproductive to my cause.
"You're right, I'll have a shower and change into something more presentable."
She gave me a toothy grin that did nothing to alleviate the bitterness in my heart.
