My head spun knowing he wanted me there in the west Indies, with him.
What the hell!
Why would he want that?
Fuck my life.
When I saw Saroj mom giving me those hopeful puppy eyes, I mumbled, "I'll try." And soon after chatting and playing with Virat's cute nephew Aarav, I left, bidding goodbye, well, of course, not to that one person.
While drafting a few emails on my laptop at home, I didn't seem to think about anything. My fingers hovered over the keyboard but I couldn't draft a single sentence. Because I was f*****g disturbed. Just then, my iPhone beeped with a notification.
Virat almighty — Hey I bought bluray of Black Panther, Thor Ragnarok and Avengers, I know you wanted to watch it so badly. Come over tomorrow afternoon. We will watch together.
I took a sharp breath but it didn't seem to help in keeping myself calm. So I typed away,
NO! I don't want to. Ask your girlfriend.
Hitting send, I regretted it immediately. I sounded too harsh. Groaning at myself, I got from my bed so damn bothered, knowing, Virat hadn't replied yet. I grabbed the new book I bought, Chasing Red, and entered my rooftop garden.
I was done with a few chapters and was really into the story when I heard the faint sound of my mumma's anklets. I sighed and lifted my head just to see her in front of me. I gave her a small smile and closed off the book by using a small dried leaf as my bookmark.
Mumma looked at me with pure adoration and sat beside me on the large swing. Her hand reached for my face and brushed away some hair strands behind my ear, "why aren't you wearing ear rings? You look prettier in those gold ones."
I huffed at her statement, "after office it gets uncomfortable mumma." A small smile creep up on my lips when I hard my mother chuckle beside me.
"I am sorry, pillu." My heart jumped at those words as I looked at her completely dumbfounded.
"Why are you sorry?"
She shrugged before answering, "I felt bad snapping at you the other day. I shouldn't have, I just lost my cool then." I breathed, looking down and nodded.
"Asmi, it's okay if you and Virat have any kinds of differences. Not every relationship is perfect." She smiled when my gaze found hers. "Those imperfections make it somewhat perfect."
I blinked at the analogy. Mumma's hand lifted and she caressed my head and then kissed my cheek. "All you need to do is adjust right now. Both of you. You guys are friends anyway, aren't you? " I hummed, not knowing what to reply to her sensitive statement.
"No one is a perfect pillu, don't try to find that in him." She spoke later as if a fact.
I smiled bitterly to myself.
"I know that no one is a perfect mummy, but the fact's, he is."
Afterwards, I felt her taking a sharp breath beside me, "no that again Asmi. You are perfect too."
I sniffed when my self-confidence started disappearing, "I am not mumma, who are we kidding? I am ugly." I didn't even realize it until a tear slipped off and fell upon my own hand.
I started sobbing when mumma hugged me from the side. "My silly, silly girl. You are beautiful. Have you seen your eyes?" I looked at her with a frown, I must have looked uglier then. "My God, you can talk with them. They are so expressive." I giggled when she tickled my sides and pinched my cheeks.
"Just to St. Lucas with virat and give this relationship a chance alright?" I just keet looking down at the cover of the book I was reading earlier. "And once you come back, tell me your decision. I promise I'll do whatever you say. Your happiness means me the most, pillu." she rocked me, holding me sideways. I smiled and nodded to her.
It was like a huge rock of guilt thrown upon me and at the same time a sense of relief washed over knowing at least someone was with me, supporting my decisions.
Even though I got ready to go to St. Lucas, I still hadn't spoken to him about the same. Maybe he was also fed up with my behavior, he didn't bother me well.
"Don't be stressed, okay? I'm with you." Mumma quipped beside me, breaking my thoughts, and I nodded at her one more time before she left. After another hour, I went into my room and checked my mail, and I got the holiday, but I had to still work on our new project and report every next week via video call or email. Suddenly, going to St. Lucas became real and I sighed, knowing after another few days I would be at St.Lucas. I smiled, thinking I would just enjoy it a little.
I needed this break.
Virat~
"Captain, why so serious?" Rahul nudged my shoulder and asked me. I turned to answer him.
"Nothing. Just checking some messages." I spoke, continuing looking at my iPhone. Again, there was no call or single text from Asmi. My lips twisted when I took in ma's concerned face when I bud my byes before leaving to St. Lucas. She was suspicious, not knowing why Asmi wasn't going with me. Why would I have said, anyway, that Asmi wasn't talking to me?
Sometimes, the girl is very childish.
When she blew off the plan to watch the Marvel Marathon, I was angry as hell. I did not even bother to speak any further. It's been a day since the team reached St. Lucas. And I booked a villa here, rather than staying in a suite. Asmi might come here, and ma wanted me to keep her with me.
And yes, I have to keep an eye on this girl. She is messing with my mind. Rather than thinking about my girlfriend, Asmi had occupied my mind.
My thoughts broke when a splash of water hit my torso and made me snap my eyes at the intruder. And there was Rohit laughing his a*s off.
Damn you Ro!
"Lets play some volleyball." He screamed, running back towards the beach, sighed and got from my comfy beach chair. Just then, my iPhone rang.
It was Jasper, my security Intel. "Mr. Kohli."
He was so quick that he didn't even let me say, "What's up, Jasper?"
"Your brother has been trying to reach you for a while now, sir. Someone named Asmi Malhotra is going to arrive in an hour now. Her flight is about to land. I checked." My eyes were wide and checked my phone screen and yes there were a few missed calls. Dammit, why didn't I pay attention?
"Alright Jasper, you reach the Airport soon and pick her up, will you?" I quickly muttered , going through a lot of curses in my head.
"Definitely Sir. I am on my way." I hung up the call and entered my villa, ignoring Ro's yelling behind me.
Running upstairs, I opened the door of the spare bedroom and checked if everything was in place. I checked the closets and washroom. When I was satisfied with the arrangements, I nodded to myself. But when I turned around I remembered that I had forgotten about the drawers.
I opened the drawers of the night stand and cringed when I found a pack of condoms in all of them.
Fucking honeymoon villas.
I grabbed all of the boxes and went downstairs and dumped the foil packs inside of the empty closet drawers.
But then there was another problem: I couldn't let her in without all of my teammates noticing. I groaned at that, but then thought that everyone was at the beach, and if they stayed there then no one would notice. And to assure them that they stayed there, I had to be with them. So I ran back to the beach, which was quite close to my villa.
"Let's play guys, it's going to be a damn good session to kick start our test series from tomorrow." They all agreed obediently and started playing.
Saved my own f*****g a*s.
Asmi~
I smiled widely when I landed in the city of the Caribbean and took in the refreshing scent of the new place. I was outside the airport and I already had my luggage taken out with the details of the hotel where I was staying in my hands. It was Vikas bhai virat's brother who gave me all the details before I left India.
Huffing, I held the handle of my bag and I was about to hail a cab when I saw a man in a black suit running towards me. I looked at my back and no one behind and it confirmed that he was running in my direction. I almost took a step back when he was about to bump into me. But his reflexes were on point when he stopped just a couple of steps in front of me. He smiled while panting and my gaze fell upon his hand which was holding a large piece of paper with my name on it. When I looked over his face again, he straightened up.
"ahem, are you Asmi?" My brows rose but I nodded at him anyway.
"Mr. Kohli asked me to take you back to the villa."
I was baffled, "oh, ah. Okay!" Be nodded and suddenly took my luggage and ushered me towards the car. After a fifteen minutes of awkward—est drive of the century, we finally reached the hotel and I beamed looking at the beach right beside the villa virat was staying in.
"Where is Virat? " I seemed to ask when I didn't find him anywhere.
"He is at the beach, with his team." I nodded hesitantly and Jason pointed at the room upstairs telling him I was going to stay there and soon he left the place, closing the door behind him.
I wandered around the villa and took in the amazing interiors.
I smiled when I saw a small kitchen at the end of the grand room. But when I reached upstairs and entered the first bedroom, all I saw was a giant king-sized bed. I threw myself on it and let the slumber take over my tired self.
Ohh, heaven.
Virat~
We spent around three hours playing on the net and had a few refreshments before I came back to the villa. I almost forgot about Asmi when the game got interesting and I lost track of time. I called Asmi out from the hallway but there wasn't any reply from her. I saw her luggage, which was just one trolley bag lying beside the couch. I picked it up and stepped off the stairs hoping to find her in her room.
Although I frowned when she wasn't inside the room, in fact the room was just the way I left a few hours ago. I placed the luggage in the corner and entered my room while dialing Asmi's number on my phone. Just when I opened the door while I pressed the phone to my ear, my eyes fell upon Asmi's sleeping figure on my bed.
My mouth hung open when I saw her sprawled on the bed in her denim shorts and a button-up shirt. Her long wavy dark hair was spread across the pillow. I laughed a little when I saw her hand stuck under the pillows. And just then her phone rang and I realized I was the one who had called her. I quickly disconnected the call and checked on her, as I was still sleeping soundly.
I walked closer when I saw her lips partly open and a small hair strand fell upon her chubby cheek. A small pout formed on her lips as her cheek was pressed on to the pillow. My fingers itched to brush that hair away from her round face but something stopped me. I sighed and moved closer to her face as her expressions really amused me. I blew some air and that hair strand was out of the way. But a small scowl spread across her face as she hummed in her sleep.
Whispering her name to wake her up, but suddenly her hand moved and touched mine. Soon she grabbed and took it under her cheek, using my palm as her pillow. I stiffened when her warm skin was under mine. I was lured to caress her. I shook my head at the thought and poked her shoulder lightly with my finger. She made a protesting sound, leaving my hand and flipped it, making me face her back now.
Okay, waking her up isn't easy!
Jogging to the other side of the bed, I tried shaking her once again and, yes, then she started opening her eyes and smiled lazily at me. My heart flipped when her finger touched my nose and she whispered in her sleepy voice, "crush."
I thought I heard her wrong or she must be mumbling something incoherent and shook my head, taking her hand in mine. "Wake up sleepy head. I am going to make some coffee. Would you like some? Or are you hungry, I can flip something up hmm?" Her long lashes blinked a few times and she slowly sat up and whispered my name while looking at me.
"Little stranger." A small smile started to creep on her lips, making her face look even brighter, but suddenly she looked away and cleared her throat.
"So, coffee?" I asked again, making her gaze meet mine. When she nodded with a yes please, I left the room. I quickly made two cups of coffee and went inside her room once again. I saw her standing in front of the mirror and wiping her face with a towel. She had freshened up, I knew, as I saw in her short Pj's and Mickey Mouse t-shirt. She turned when I knocked once on the opened door.
"Thank you." She took a cup from me and inhaled the coffee. We sat at the edge of the indoor pool watching the sunset.
"How was the flight?" I asked, putting down the cup as it was still too hot for my liking.
"It was alright. I couldn't sleep the whole time." I nodded and continued watching the sun down.
"Virat?"
"Hmm?"
"I'm sorry." She spoke in a low voice, making me catch that sadness in her voice. I didn't like it.
But before I could retort she trailed off, "I shouldn't have snapped at you over a text. And I've decided too, I'll end this engagement once we get back home." My own lips partly opened to say something but nothing came out. I must have looked like a monkey. "You were right all along. We need to be with someone we love." She shrugged and there was a pang in my chest. "So let's break it once we go back to Delhi." She smiled with her glassy eyes looking at me as if this wasn't going to affect her at all.
And it brought discomfort inside of me.
I nodded nevertheless and gulped some coffee as I swallowed the lump down my throat. "I am sorry too, Asmi. I shouldn't have said the things I said on our engagement night." I felt her taking a sharp breath beside me and she gave me a tight-lipped smile.
Fake one.
"That's alright."
"But I didn't mean anything I said that night."
She looked down and nodded again. Sighing, she spoke the same words.
"I didn't like the way you ignored me all this time," I confessed. Surprisingly, my tone was softer.
Why can't I be mad at her? I should be right?
"I know, I shouldn't have. I just needed time alone. To figure things out." I nodded understandingly.
"I've been inconsiderate as well."
She shook her head as she stretched her legs and dipped them in the water. "You weren't Virat. It's fine. Whenever someone behaves the way I never expect them to, I seem to close off." It was her nature. Asmi was one sensitive person I knew but she had strong traces in her as well.
"Closing off isn't bad. But I always crave attention." Playing with water, she smiled at my words.
"Attention freak." We both laughed until darkness eloped around us and lights at the porch brightened the corners.
I turned towards Asmi and rubbed my hands together, "so friends again?" She looked weirdly at me and then at my hand which was forwarded towards her.
"We never broke up." Muttering those words she looked at me, narrowing her eyes which shone under the soft lights surrounding us.
When she rolled her eyes and took my hand, I spoke as if dazed, "yeah. We never broke up." There was a sense of a thill jolting inside of me when our hands met another time. Just like when we became buddies the first time. Not knowing what the future holds, just when everything changes.
Breaking our conversation, my phone dinged and when I opened I had an urge to groan real loud.
"What happened?" Asmi asked suddenly, making me lift my gaze and meet her eyes. They were dark brown, like dark chocolate.
Those beautiful eyes held questions and curiosity. Asmi's smiling face fell, making me feel like a jerk when I confessed.
"Veronica is coming here tomorrow."
