Chapter 4 She Needs to Behave

1258 Words
It was quiet in the ward. Jason was still in ICU. He wouldn’t be out until afternoon. Brenda Harrison was sitting at his bedside and gazing into space, her eyes red from crying. Malcom was kneeling by the bed, hunched and dejected. Ryan led Agnes into the room, closed followed by Nick, Miranda and Flora. "Mom." "Ryan." Brenda lifted her eyes, but when she saw Agnes hiding behind Ryan, her face fell. "What are you doing here?” Brenda was a ruthlessly efficient woman. She didn’t bore any children for nearly 20 years after her marriage with Jason. It was until 20 years later, when her position of Mrs Jenkins became solid, that she decided to have a baby and gave birth to Ryan. No lover of Jason’s, even those who bore Jason illegitimate sons, dared to challenge her authority. Agnes trembled with fear, and she subconsciously clenched her hand holding Ryan. Ryan glanced at her and said, "Mom, Agnes know she was wrong. She's here to apologize to you and dad." "Apologize?" Brenda glanced at Agnes and said with a sneer, "she was attempting suicide yesterday, and now she’s here to apologize?" Agnes bent her head, and said weakly: "Mrs Jenkins, I am really sorry." Brenda gave another sneer, and shot a contemptuous glance at Nick and Miranda. Miranda made a step forward nervously and said with a tentative smile: "Dear Brenda, Agnes..." "Stop!" Brenda interrupted coldly, "You don’t ‘dear’ me! And we Jenkins can’t afford your good daughter as the wife of my son! " Miranda went scarlet with embarrassment, but she had to go on for her daughter’s sake. "It's my fault that Agnes had done such mischief. I didn’t teach her self-discipline. I’ll see to it that she’ll never embarrass your family again." "Embarrass my family? I didn’t know the Jenkins had any more face to lose. Haven't your dear daughter lost it already? " Brenda said with sarcasm, her eyes cold and sharp. Jason was still in ICU. Nick was only a live-in husband, and he was not in a position to talk. Miranda was in dumb silence. Caught in a moment’s anxiety, Agnes bent her knees and knelt on the ground. In her previous life, her behavior nearly led to Jason’s death. The three babies she bore Ryan died in her womb, and Ryan was killed by a shark. All of this was caused by her. She owed too much to the Jenkins. She would give her life for them, let alone kneeling down. "Mrs Jenkins, it's all my fault. You can hit or scold me in any way you want, if you can just forgive me." Miranda was stunned, but she soon responded. As the saying goes, strike while the iron is hot. Miranda kept scolding Agnes and saying kind words to appease Brenda. Flora’s mouth fell open. She had told Agnes again and again to make a scene, but now she knelt down to apologize! Even though Agnes had done them wrong, Ryan didn’t want to see her acting so humbly. He pulled her up and said to Brenda, "Mom, Agnes really knows she was wrong. She still hasn’t recovered from her injury, and she needs to have some rest now." "I’m not going back. I'll wait for Mr Jenkins to wake up. I want to apologize to him personally." Agnes’ eyes were covered with tears, and she bit her lips to stop the choking. Brenda frowned and stared at Agnes' thickly bandaged head. She sighed after a while. "Go home. Ryan can take you here when Jason wakes up." After Brenda said this, Miranda and Nick breathed a sign of relief. They knew she had forgiven Agnes. Miranda held Agnes’ hand, and again said many kind words to Brenda. Brenda waved her hand wearily, and signed to them to leave. Malcom had been gazing expectantly at Agnes since she came in, but Agnes didn’t even look at him. Ryan saw Agnes off to her ward, gazed at her for a long time, and then left without saying a word. Miranda wiped the sweat on her forehead, and murmured to herself: "Thank God." Nick sternly reproached Agnes: "Agnes, why did you kneel down before that woman! You are embarrassing me and your mother in front of Brenda! Such a disgrace! " Flora acted as a peacemaker: "Uncle Nick, please don't scold Agnes. Uncle, aunt, you have enough to deal with in the company. Go have some rest. I'll take care of Agnes. " Nick said before leaving: "Agnes, Ryan had been very good to you. What more do you want? Malcom is just an illegitimate son of Jason’s. He can in no way rival Ryan. Think about it.” As soon as they left, Flora took off her hypocritical mask. "Agnes, what's the matter with you? Didn't we agree that you should make a scene? Why did you kneel down to Brenda? Shame on you!” Agnes fiddled with her phone unhurriedly. "Talk!" Flora grabbed her phone angrily, "Why are you still playing with your cellphone! Don't you see that Malcom can hardly kneel any longer? Brenda is waiting to tear him apart!” Agnes looked up at her, and smiled steadily: "You care very much about Malcom, don’t you?" Flora was a little stunned at hearing this. She licked her lips and quickly looked away, giving an awkward smile. "Why would I care for him? It’s for your sake I’m saying this. You love him more than everything. If Brenda should do something to him, I’m afraid you can’t take it." With the corner of her mouth lifted, Agnes gave a sneer and said nothing in reply. Flora panicked for a moment and immediately changed the subject. "Agnes, it's okay if you don't want to make a scene. But why did you kneel down before them? What if they forgive you and refuse to break off your engagement with Ryan? Where would this lead for you and Malcom?" Agnes shot a glance at the door casually. "Flora, how many years have you been living in our house?" Flora was confused about Agnes’ question. She eyed Flora suspiciously, and replied in a low voice: "Fifteen years." "Then you should know that Gilbert Group is dependent on Jenkins Group. Once we become enemies, Gilbert Group would be defeated before it could fight." "But don’t you love Malcom? Now you are trading your love for money?" Flora gave her a disdainful look: "So your love for Malcom is false. He is nothing compared with your family business! " Agnes smiled meaningfully: "Are you defending Malcom?" Flora almost panicked again, but she quickly denied: “Why would I defend him? I'm defending you. It's unfair to you to sacrifice your love for Malcom. " "You urged me to make a scene in Mr Jenkins’ ward, and said that once Mr Jenkins was dead, they would break off my engagement with Ryan. But have you ever thought about what they would do to Gilbert Group if anything happened to Mr Jenkins? " Agnes said calmly, as if she was explaining to Flora the pros and cons of making a scene in Mr Jenkins’ ward. Afraid of being exposed, Flora tried to explain: "I’m only saying this for your sake. You attempted suicide for Malcom. I'm just afraid that you'll do terrible things to hurt yourself. That’s why I’m giving you these advice..." With a loud “bang”, the door of the ward was pushed open and hit against the wall noisily.
