Korbins POV
I was born Samuel Korbin Collins. However, I never went by Samuel. My parents have called me Korbin since the day they brought me home. I was OK with that. I was never very fond of that name. It was just so old-fashioned and we didn’t have anyone in the family by that name.
When I was five years old, my Uncle Aaron showed up in our pack and became one of my favorite people. He was always around and was always willing to hang out with me. He also bought me the coolest birthday presents and Christmas presents. He also would take me for a run on his wolf, Mav, anytime I wanted. I think sometimes I hung out more with him as a child than I did with my father.
When I was twelve years old, my parents sat me down and told me I was adopted. It wasn’t a shock. I looked nothing like them and everything like my Uncle Aaron. We were literally identical. I knew before they told me that he was my biological father, but I never said anything to my parents. I didn’t want to hurt them. They were amazing parents. I knew when the time was right they would tell me, and if they didn’t, I was OK with that as well. I didn’t feel this need to seek out my birth parents even though one was pretending to be my uncle. I couldn't care less about meeting my birth mother.
Two days before my eighteenth birthday, my parents asked me to meet them in their office. I remember it like yesterday.
“Hey mom, dad, what’s up?” I asked, walking in.
“We would like to have a conversation with you.”
I walked to the front of the desk and sat down. My mom was sitting on my dad’s lap and I could tell that she was nervous. I already knew what this conversation was about.
“Son, we would like to talk to you about your birth parents.”
“Look, as far as I am concerned, you are my parents. My parents gave me up and I don’t need to know about them.”
“Yes, you do. Your Uncle Aaron is your biological father. He showed up here when you were five and wanted to be a part of your life. He had a very different story than what your birth mother told us. Now we don’t know which one was true, but he was genuine when he came here and he has been nothing but an upstanding member of our pack. If you would like, we can help you meet your birth mother as well.” My dad explained to me.
“Really, I am ok. If we’re being honest, I’ve known since I was twelve and you guys told me that I was adopted.”
“Why didn’t you say something?” My mom asked.
“There was no need. As far as I was concerned, you are my parents and Uncle Aaron is just that my uncle and I couldn't care less about my birth mom.”
My mom got up and ran around the desk and wrapped me in a hug. “I love you Korbin. You are going to make a fine Alpha soon.” My dad chuckled, and I just hugged her back.
I planned on not meeting my mother until my father Aaron got to me. I went to him when I was nineteen and told him that I knew he was my biological father. That’s when he sat me down and told me the truth about my birth mother. She didn’t want us, either of us. He gave her everything, and she just didn’t want us.
That’s what led me to where I am today. I am now twenty-two years old and my father is ready to hand over the pack to me. I have yet to find my mate, but do have a wonderful girlfriend, Amberly. I have thought about making her my chosen Luna. She would be perfect for the job. Our wolves like each other and my wolf Enzo has even mentioned marking her as well.
“Amberly, let’s go to dinner tonight, just the two of us,” I told her as we both put our clothes on. She came to visit me in the middle of the afternoon. I haven’t told her about my birth mother and I need to. Aaron and I plan on leaving in two weeks. We are going to drive and that is going to add on a few days of trip since it’s across the country.
“Just the two of us?” She asked. A lot of times we had my soon to be beta Chase with us or the soon to be gamma Kody and a lot of times both of them, but she was always so good about it and never complained.
“Just the two of us, I promise.”
She came back over to me and gave me a soft kiss on the lips with a big smile. “Then I would love to go with you. Not that I don’t mind them, but sometimes it’s nice being just us.”
“I’m sorry that it doesn’t happen more, but I promise to try to make it happen more.” I told her, kissing her again.
“I need to go, but what time do we want to meet?”
“I will pick you up at six.”
“Sounds great. I am going to help your mom.” She said and then walked out of my room.
“Hey you two want to meet me somewhere. We need to talk,” I linked Chase and Kody.
“Meet at the lake in our usual spot?” Kody linked back.
“I can be there in twenty,” Chase linked.
“Twenty it is then,” I linked back.
I got dressed the rest of the way and headed out. I shifted as soon as I was outside and picked up my clothes in my mouth. With Enzo running, it would only take me like four minutes to get there, so I let him run around for a little while before I made him head to our spot at the lake. We claimed this spot as ours when we were kids and, for the most part, everyone left this little section alone. We would occasionally have to run younger kids off.
Getting there, we shifted back, and I got dressed quickly and walked to the lake. Chase was there waiting, but Kody hadn’t shown up yet.
“Hey man, what’s up?” Chase asked.
“Gotta talk to you guys about something, but need to wait for Kody.”
“Go ahead, I’m here,” he said, coming out of the trees. He must have run here and then shifted before coming to us.
“OK, so you guys know I was adopted and Aaron is my biological father, but I am going to meet my biological mother.”
“Why? I thought you were happy not knowing who she was,” Chase asked me.
“I was, but before I become Alpha, I have to know why. It’s a chapter of my life I want to close. I need to close it out and when I come back, I am going to ask Amberly to be my Luna.”
“Wow, slow down there. What about your fated mate?” Kody asked this time.
“Come on, I am twenty-two and about to take over this pack. I need a Luna and have yet to meet my fated mate. Besides, I love Amberly and she will make a great Luna.”
“Ya, you're right. She will make a great Luna, but still you have a fated mate out there somewhere. Don’t you want to try a little harder?” Kody asked again. He was all about the mate bond. He was waiting for his fated mate for everything. He hadn’t even kissed a woman yet and swears he won’t until he finds his mate. He is truly one of a kind.
“Sorry buddy, I am going to make her my Luna as soon as I am back. I’m going to drive with Aaron and we should be gone maybe two weeks.”
“Where does she live?” Chase asked.
“Wymoning.”
“That’s a long f*****g drive. No thanks.”
“Ya, but it will be good for us, plus it will give me time to process everything on the way home.”
“I get that. What do you need from us?” Chase asked, knowing I would want him to do something.
“Keep an eye an Amberly for me. Make sure she stays safe and also help my dad out with whatever he needs.”
“This feels more like a goodbye than anything.”
“Definitely not a goodbye.”
“Good. Just don’t decide that you're better off at your mom’s pack,” Kody joked.
“No, just need some closure.”
“You know if you need us, we’re here for you,” Chase said.
“I know, but right now I have to go explain this to my parents and then I have dinner with Amberly and I have to explain this to her.”
“Good luck with that man,” Chase laughed because Amberly wouldn’t like me leaving for that long without her.
We said our goodbyes, and I walked slowly back to the pack house. I was avoiding telling my mom. I know deep down she was always afraid that I would choose my birth mom over her, but that would never happen. They don’t know the real reason I am going there and they never will. I walked into their place and found them both laying on the couch together.
“Hey Korbin, what’s going on?” My mom asked, sitting up.
“I wanted to talk to you guys real fast.” I told them and they both sat up, waiting for me to start.
“Mom, please don’t think anything of this, but I need some closure. I am going to meet my birth mother. Aaron is going with me and we’re driving, leaving in the morning. When I get back, I want to ask Amberly to be my chosen Luna and I want to take things over for you, dad,” I told both of them and then held my breath, waiting for them to say something.
“I understand you needing closure. Please, just promise me that you will come back here.” My mom said with tears in her eyes.
“Of course I will be back, mom. It’s just something I need to do to move onto the next part of my life. I need to talk to her.”
“We understand. I really want you to take this time and think about taking Amberly as your chosen Luna. I know you love her, but the mate bond can be incredible. You won’t know what you're giving up. Don’t get me wrong Amerbly would make an incredible Luna, but to give up your goddess chosen mate is a big deal. We will support your decision, whatever it is.” My dad said.
“Thanks guys. I have to go. I am taking Amberly to dinner tonight so I can tell her that I am leaving for a while but the Luna thing is a secret. I don’t want to do it until I get back.”
“Secret is safe with us, son,” my dad said, smiling at me.
I left my parents’ place and ran and got ready because I was about out of time and was going to be late picking up Amberly.
That was the most awkward dinner I’ve ever had. Amberly wasn’t happy about me leaving and she didn’t understand my need to meet my mother, but I couldn’t tell her the truth. I dropped her off at her parents’ place. She didn’t want to spend the night with me. She was really upset about it. We hadn’t spent anytime apart since we starting dating and she was taking it harder than I thought.
“Hey be ready, I want any early start. Four am,” Aaron linked me.
“I will be ready and even take the first shift of driving,” I linked him back.
He and I have been training for this. This plan has been in place for three years, but after hearing about her now mate, I knew I had to be in the best shape of my life. I was finally ready for a fight and Aaron said he was also in the best shape of his life.
My birth mother and her family will be taken down for the way they treated Aaron and the way she just gave us up.
