CHAPTER TWO. The Knife In My Back.
I place my lunch tray down next to Dani. I nudge her arm, trying to get her attention away from Wolfie Grey.
I roll my eyes and wave my hand in front of her, "Dude! Did you die?"
Her cheeks turn pink, " Uh.. no."
"What's wrong with you?"
She shrugs while placing her napkin on her lap. "I don't know. I just go into a trance, it's like he's laid eggs in my mind and I can sense when he's in the same room as me."
"Okay... weird."
"Most of the girls are like that."
"Again, weird."
"How do you not see it?" She asks.
"See what?"
"How hot the dude is. It's like your blind. The man looks like an actual Greek God."
"He's cute I'll give you that. But I'm not going to drool all over myself like you do."
"Ladies." Clay smiles, taking a seat across from me. "What are you girls talking about?"
I stab my broccoli and look up at Clay, "She's talking about Wolfie, like usual."
"Still? Is he all you can talk about? The dude doesn't even have any friends. He's always alone, don't you find that a little strange?" Clay asks, chewing on his burger.
She shrugs slightly, "Maybe He's socially awkward or doesn't like people."
"Well people are the worst."
Clay chuckles, "Edie's got a point."
"Have you ever actually tried talking to him?" I inquire.
"No..."
"Well all the years you've crushed hard for him and never even tried talking to him, why don't you go sit with him?" I suggest.
She waves me off, "Why would I do that?"
"Because you like him. It's not hard talking to people."
"Says the girl who doesn't have a problem talking to anyone, even the hottest of guys."
I brush my hair behind my ear and glance at her. "Dani, don't turn it around on me. You talk to guys so easily, I would kill to have your confidence. Besides your with a new guy like every other day."
"Maybe you should go talk to him." She gives me a small cheeky grin.
"And why would I do that?"
Clay's back straightens, "Yeah, Why would she do that?"
"Well she said it's so easy talking to people, prove it to me."
I scoff, "Yeah, no. I'm not going to do that."
She crosses her arms over her chest, "Why not?"
"Because I'm not the one that likes the guy."
"Prove me wrong then." She gibes, her lips curve into a small smirk.
"Nah, I think I'm good. I don't need to prove you wrong for you to know I'm right."
"How are your girls first day back to school?" Clay inquires, running his finger over his scar on his cheek.
"Boring, per-usual."
"Mines been great!" Dani chirps.
"What about yours?" I ask with a mouth full.
He shrugs and pops a fry in his mouth. "It's been fine. Nothing eventful, pretty boring actually."
I nod, "Yeah? Well school sucks ass."
Clay chuckles softly, "True." He finishes his last bite, "Do either of you have a free period next hour?"
I nod, "I do."
"Okay cool, meet me on the bleachers at the football field?"
"Sure."
"Sweet."
Dani plays with the ends of her pigtail braids. "Sadly I don't. I have drama next period."
"I thought you liked drama? You've taken it every year since eighth grade, that's how we met."
She nods and looks down at her lunch tray, "Yeah I do..."
"Okay? What's wrong?" Clay asks.
She shrugs, "Well, I... just kinda feel left out. You and Edie have known each other since you were in daycare... and I just... feel like you two do everything together.. without me."
"Dani, we include you in everything. You were the one that ditched us last night. If you had a free period at the same time as we do, then we'd hangout with you. We don't exclude you from anything." I tighten my deep red bandanna that's holding my curly hair in a low ponytail. "Dani, we love you. You shouldn't be feeling like that. I'm sorry that you do."
She waves her hand in front of me. "It's silly. I'm sorry I brought it up."
Clay places his hand on top of hers. "Dani, it's not stupid, we don't mean to make you feel left out." He gives her a small sympathetic smile.
A smile slowly grows on her dark pink lips. "Thanks guys."
The bell rings, signaling that lunch is over. Clay grabs all our trays and throws everything away for us.
I toss my arm over Dani's shoulders, "Thanks Clay." I glance down at Dani, "I'll see you last period."
She nods and heads for her class.
"Okay I'll meet you at the bleachers, I'm going to put my bag up." I tell Clay.
He nods and walks out the cafeteria doors.
I make my way down the crowded corridor, kids slowly working their way to their next class. As the halls empty I make it to my locker, I quickly unlock it and toss my bag in. I reach for my red and black plaid shirt, I tie it around my waist and reapply my dark red matte lipstick. I close my locker shut and swirl around on my heels, bumping into somebody's side.
"Watch it!" Wolfie barks.
"Wow, you don't need to be so snappy, it was an accident dude."
He rolls his eyes and shoves his hands into his jacket pockets, exiting through the school doors. I rub the back of my neck and adjust my tank top strap.
"Edie Morgen."
I turn around and see Mrs.Hedge stomp my way.
"Yes?"
She pushes up her cheetah print glasses with her pinky and scrunches her face. "Put your jacket on over that top."
"Why?"
"School policy." She informs me.
"Like my shoulder is going to be distracting?"
"I'm sorry Ms.Morgen, I don't make the rules."
I roll my eyes and pull my plaid shirt on before wandering out the doors. I spot Clay at the top bench on the bleachers and work my way over to him.
"Hey!" He chirps.
"Hey Clay."
I brush off my distressed, black, skinny jeans as I take a seat next to Clayton. He places his hand on my knee, fiddling with the strings. "I'm sorry you didn't get to spend the night at my place."
"Dude, it's okay."
He shakes his head and presses his pink lips into a thin line. "No it's not. What happened when you got home?"
My back tenses, "The usual."
"Did he slap you?"
"Yup. My mom tried to stop him, but then he back handed her. So... I."
"You what?"
"I socked him in the face."
He bursts into laughter. "Oh my God, no way? What happened after that?"
"Well I broke his nose but he stopped beating on us."
"He probably s**t bricks." His adorably awkward smile causes his little bit of freckles that he has to crinkle, and his cheeks blaze red. His hand slowly moves up my thigh and reaches my hands. His fingertips brush my soft, olive skin. His hands slip around mine, "Edie, I'm really proud of you."
"Thanks."
He leans closer, my heart rate increases. His lips graze mine.
I pull my hands away and push him away from me. "Clay! What do you think your doing?!"
"I-I... I'm sorry. I just thought-"
"You thought nothing."
He shakes his head aggressively, "Edie, you can't deny that-"
"Yes I can, Clayton." I stand up and jog down the bleachers.
"Edie wait!" He places his hand on my shoulder.
I tug my shoulder away from him, "This never happened."
" Um... Okay. I'm sorry Edie. I didn't mean to over step any boundaries."
I ignore his comment and walk back inside the school building.
*******
12:22a.m.
I stroll down the empty streets of downtown Blackstone Pines. My phone vibrates in my back pocket, I quickly slide it out and glance at the lit up screen.
Edie I'm sorry about what happened after lunch. You can't keep avoiding my calls. Text me back.
~ Clayton Froth
I shove my phone back into my pocket and adjust my duffle bag over my shoulder. I spot a brick building across the street that would be perfect to spray paint. I quickly make my way across the street and place the bag down beside me, I kneel down and grab two cans of spray paint and begin to work my magic.
I can't stop thinking about Clay trying to kiss me. He's called me at least ten times and has left about fifteen text messages. I'm honestly not sure how to respond to him. We've been best friends forever, I'm happy I have him in my life. We gone through so much together. This might just be a rough patch in our friendship.
I hear groaning and grunting knock me out of my thoughts. I glance around the dead town and see nothing. I must just be hearing things.
Clay and I have been friends since daycare. I remember the day we met so well, I remember it was close to my birthday and I was about to turn five. There was this boy named Franklin and he was picking on Clay, so I decided to give that little bastard a piece of my mind. I yelled at the kid and told him to stop pushing Clay around. The kid shoved me to the ground. I gave him one more warning and told him to stop, but, of course he didn't listen. So I grabbed the styrofoam bat and hit him in the head. I got yelled at by the adults and was picked up early. I got suspended for two days and had to apologize to the kid. A few days later I made him eat dirt and got suspended again. But ever since then we've been friends, a couple of weeks later Clay had an accident, but that's a story for another time.
Groaning snaps me back into reality. I toss the empty cans back into the bag, I glance around me and see Wolfie Grey limping across the street, and something sticking out of his back. I squint, as if that'll help me see what it is. I grab my bag and sling it over me. I gaze over at Wolfie once more, he collapses and lands on the cemented ground.
I run over to him, "Grey?" As I approach him I see that there's a knife sticking out his back. "Oh my God." I murmur. I rush to his side, "Yo Grey!"
"Rowan Morgen?"
"Uh that's my middle name, it's actually Edie. what the hell happened to you?!"
"There's a f*****g knife in my back."
"I see that."
"Well, can ya pull it out?!" He snarls.
I get a closer look at his face and notice his right eye is completely red and blood is oozing out the side of it. His lip is cut up and the left side of his face is completely bruised. "If I pull it out your going to bleed to death. You need a doctor!"
"Do you see a doctor around?"
"Well no-"
"Then there ya go. Just pull the damn knife out!" He yells.
"I can't pull it out yet, there's a convenient store a few blocks away, I need to get a first aid kit and then I can pull it out. Who stabbed you?!"
"No one."
"Wolfie you need to tell me!"
"It's none of your business."
I grab his arm and pull it over my shoulder, and wrap my free arm around his back. "Actually it kinda is my business now, you need to tell me who stabbed you!" I demand.
"I can't tell you that, Little Red."
I roll my eyes and lean him against a brick building. I lift up the front of his shirt, the stab wound went all the way through. I grab his arm and pull it over my shoulder again, "My names' not red, it's Edie."
He grunts and clutches his side, "Rowan means red. Just keep walking."
"I'm trying, your not exactly as light as a feather." I exasperate.
"It's all muscle."
"Uh huh, that's what they all say." I lean him against the side of the concrete building. "Okay stay here, I'll be quick."
"It's not like I'm going anywhere."
I roll my eyes and jog into the building. Luckily they're open twenty four hours. I scatter down the healthcare isle and grab a hefty first aid kit. I smack it down on the counter along with a fifty dollar bill, damn it's expensive. "Keep the change." I tell the elder man and jog out the store.
I round the corner and lay Grey on his chest.
I place my hand around the handle and my left hand on his back. "Ready?"
"Yes!" He growls.
I make sure I have a good grip before pulling the knife out, I try to slide it out as quickly as I can, he groans in pain. I stare at the bloody knife in my hands, I grab all the gauze and Cotten pads, and tape and wrap it all around the stab wound, while applying pressure. "You're bleeding really bad." I pull the plaid top off and bunch it up, laying it on-top of his wound, apply a good amount of pressure.
"Could you be a little more gentle?" He howles.
"Dude you've just been stabbed, besides I have to apply pressure." I grab a bottle of scotch out of my bag, "Drink some of this."
He yanks the bottle away from me and downs half the bottle.
"I said some." I pry the bottle from his large, tan, hands. "This isn't exactly the time to get hammered, I need you conscious."
"I can handle my alcohol."
"Yeah, okay." I lift him up and wrap my arm around his back. "Keep pressure applied to your wound. Since you don't want to go to a hospital, where do you live?"
He stays quiet.
"I think it's okay to tell the girl who saved your life."
"Down starview Lane."
