Chapter 4

When their run was finally over, Felita emerged from the trees feeling so full of energy and happiness. Her hair was now twisted into a messy bun, and her feet were bare as she walked on the soft grass. Vallin stood at the back of the pack house waiting for her as Thorin sat at one of the tables. Felita's eyes flickered from one to the other, unsure which one to go to first. She gave in and went to Thorin. She took a seat next to him, and he took her hand. He gave her a smile that took her breath away. His red eyes glinted in the moonlight, and his black hair hung around his shoulders. He looked nothing like Vallin, but everything about him caused her body to hum with excitement. It made her aware of him in a slightly overwhelming way. "How was your first shift? I was getting worried before you came out of the trees." Felita took a deep breath, "I'm not going to lie, the shifting part kind of sucked, but the run was amazing. My wolf was impressed by your dragon. She didn't shut up the entire time about coming back to see you." Thorin felt his chest puff up a bit at her praise. "I'm glad to hear that. We will have to go for a run of our own soon. Dragons don't necessarily run, but we can spend some time together in our other form for them to bond." Felita agreed, "I would like that. We didn't get to finish our conversation earlier tonight. I asked if it's normal to feel so much and so quickly between dragon mates or if it is because we are such a unique pair?" Thorin considered her question. "For dragons, we feel a pull to our mate like an invisible string drawing us together. That's how I found you and why you are so comfortable with me even though we don't know each other." Felita nodded in understanding, and he continued, "I understand that werewolves feel sparks or tingling when mates touch each other. We feel a warmth spread through our bodies. Once we complete the bond, we can also mind link each other, as werewolves do. As a royal dragon, I can sense your emotions, and the more we are together, you will also start to feel mine. It may be muted because you are a wolf. I don't know exactly." Felita absorbed everything he told her, "I do feel the pull and the warmth when we touch. When you kissed me, it was much more intense." Thorin's eyes darkened at the mention of their kiss. "I hate to cut our time short, but I need to talk to Vallin. I haven't been able to talk to him about you and me. He needs to know what's happening and what I have decided." Thorin seemed a little disappointed, but he didn't object. "Let me give you my number. Will you be leaving?" Felita felt a pang of concern at the thought of him leaving. "No, I will not be leaving with uncertain things between us. I will be close by and will see you tomorrow. Go talk to him tonight, but tomorrow, I want all of your time." She tilted her head at his request, but he didn't hesitate. "He has known you for eighteen years. I have known you for hours and, even then, had to share that time. I think it's only fair if I get some of your undivided attention." Felita couldn't argue with his logic, and she liked the idea of spending the day with him. Her eyes roamed his face, glancing from his lips to his eyes. "I can feel your emotions, mate. It's almost as good as knowing what you're thinking." His voice was low and gravelly, and it made her heart race. "So tell me what I'm thinking," she challenged him with a smirk. Thorin leaned in closer, and his breath tickled her ear. "You're excited at the thought of being with me. Probably thinking about kissing me again, and you're a little confused because you don't feel guilty about it." He leaned back, and his red eyes met her gray ones. "You don't have to feel guilty because we are mates paired together by the Moon Goddess. There is nothing more special than that gift. No one should ever make you feel bad for accepting the mate bond. This situation is unusual, and it will be a challenge, but in the end, it will work out. I have faith in that, and you should, too. I've waited so long for you that I do not doubt that we will be together. I promise I will never do anything to make you feel guilty about your bond with Vallin. I don't like it, and maybe I'm jealous, but I will never take it out on you." He tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear before he sat back in his chair. "Also, that top is killing me. Just knowing everyone is seeing the same thing has my dragon going crazy in my head." "Mmm. Mate likes what he sees and wants to keep it for himself," Felita's wolf said in her head. "Hush, you're distracting me. I'm not used to hearing you," she told her inner wolf. "I will keep that in mind for the next time I wear it," she challenged her sexy dark mate. His eyes glowed softly, and she knew his dragon was responding to her words, "Be careful how far you push a mate who is trying very hard not to claim you." A shiver ran down her back as an image of them together flashed through her head. She somehow knew it wasn't her own thought, and her eyes widened. "How did you do that?" Thorin chuckled, "Magic, of course." Felita's cheeks turned pink, "that's what you think about when you look at me?" He grew serious, "I have so many thoughts and emotions when I see you; it's probably a good thing that you can't feel them yet. I may not be showing it, but I am happier than you imagine. Living for so long without my mate has been difficult. I've watched most of my friends and family find their mate and start a family while I had to keep searching and having faith that you would one day show up." Felita shook her head, "I can't imagine what that must have been like. I've always had a feeling that Vallin was mine. Everything just felt right and meant to be. Having you show up tonight was completely unexpected. Now, my life doesn't fit into the picture-perfect box I've always been in. I don't know how to handle it." Thorin felt a glimmer of sadness for her. "I do appreciate the promise you made. I'm a little nervous about how the pack will handle the news. The girls at school may think Vallin is fair game now, and I don't like that." Thorin pulled her into a hug, "I can't say it's going to be easy, but it's going to be okay. I'm here for you if you need anything." Felita hugged him back, "I better go. Thank you for being so understanding. Text me later. I can't wait to spend tomorrow getting to know you more." It took all his strength to let her go and watch her walk away. It was like a piece of him was walking away, one that he had waited so long to find, only for everything to be so complicated. He knew he couldn't give up faith now; he was too close. He needed to stay focused on her and show her how right things were between them. Felita joined Vallin, standing by the back of the packhouse. "Hey, are you ready to go inside," she asked him as she wrapped one arm around his waist. Vallin looked a little relieved at her question. "Yes! I need a shower and want to relax with you." Felita agreed, "Yes to both of those things. Let's get some snacks, too. All that running made me hungry." They walked upstairs, and Vallin left her outside her room. "I will be back soon with those snacks." Felita stood at her door and waved as he went down the hall to his room. Once in her room, she quickly showered and changed into her pajamas. She had imagined that she would be completing her mate bond with Vallin tonight, but that was now off the table. Until she had worked things out with Thorin, she wouldn't be marking anyone.
