Once the redness on her face had subsided, Skylar had thanked Mrs Carter for covering for her and appreciatively accepted a ride home from one of the pack guards who chatted to her as they made their way through the dark toward her house at the edge of the territory.
As the car stopped outside, Skylar quickly gave the warrior a thank you before opening the door and hopping down from the tall truck into the rain that had just started to fall. Running over to the front porch she turned and watched as the guard turned around and gave a quick wave before opening the front door and slipping inside.
Locking it carefully behind her, she padded through the house, silently cursing as she started to rip off her top having gotten drenched in the few moments that she had been making her way to the door.
Entering her room, she grabbed a towel from the back of her chair and rubbed her hair before stripping the remainder of her clothes from her body and opening her drawer to pull out some fluffy pyjamas.
Walking quietly out of her room again, she opened the door opposite and peeked inside to see her mother propped up on her pillows, her book resting on her chest as she slept. Making her way inside, Skylar carefully removed her mother’s glasses from her face, folding them up and placing them on the small bed side table. Marking the page of the book with the scrap of paper her mother always used, the young Omega placed it next to the glasses before shaking her mothers shoulder gently.
‘Mum?’ she called softly, ‘I'm home, you need to lay down properly, you’ll get pains in your neck sleeping like this’
Her mother opened her eyes sleepily, smiling as her daughter’s face swam into view, ‘Skylar’ she breathed, ‘are you OK? You are very late this evening’
Skylar grinned back, ‘I'm fine mum, just lots to do at the pack house at the minute, don’t you worry about me, you just get some sleep OK?’ she replied, helping her mother to shuffle down the bed, before pulling the covers over her and placing a kiss on her forehead. ‘Night mum’ she whispered as she turned off the little lamp that sat next to her mother’s bed and crept back out of the room.
The following morning, having finished her morning chores, Skylar made her way outside to catch the school bus as a voice called out to her, turning around she watched as Jackson’s grinning face came toward her.
‘Hey Sky’ he chirped happily, ‘you want a ride to school?’
Skylar shook her head immediately, ‘no, you’re fine Jack, you go ahead, I'll just take the bus’ she replied quickly.
Jackson’s face fell a bit, ‘why? Are you still worried what people will say? I won’t let them hurt you Sky’ the Alpha promised sincerely.
Skylar fought internally for a moment, wondering whether to tell Jackson about her run in with the Beta, but she couldn’t bring herself to do so.
She hadn’t depended on anyone before and she didn’t want to start now, allowing her pride to win, Skylar smiled up at him, ‘nothing like that Jack, I just feel like taking the bus’ she replied, patting his arm with her hand.
Jackson nodded uncertainly, ‘uh OK Sky, if you are sure’ he replied started to back away from her slowly as she nodded enthusiastically.
‘Yup, totally sure Jack, I'll see you at school OK?’ she said as she waved to him and turned quickly on her heel, sprinting toward the waiting school bus, clambering on board and throwing herself into one of the seats.
Gazing out of the window, her chest panged in guilt as she saw Jackson stood watching the bus leave dejectedly. Mentally shaking her head, she faced forward, this was for the best, she needed to stop encouraging the Alpha’s son, they were of two different leagues, he may not want to see it, but it was there and the only person who would get hurt by their friendship was her.
She managed to avoid the Alpha for her morning classes, as the lunch bell rang, she hurriedly cleared away her books and raced toward the cafeteria to meet up with Alexandra. Spotting her friend waiting impatiently by the door, she skidded to a halt before the pair weaved through the crowd to find an empty table to sit at.
Plonking themselves down, Alexandra pulled out her over flowing lunch box before staring over Skylar’s shoulder to see what she had.
‘Ugh, Mrs Carter made you lunch again didn’t she?’ Alexandra groaned as the Omega pulled out a chicken and bacon wrap.
‘uh huh’ Skylar grinned as she took a large bite, moaning in pleasure as the taste touched her tongue.
‘You want to be careful Sky, people will wonder what you are doing with that sandwich’ came an amused voice, causing Skylar to start to choke on her mouthful.
Looking up, her eyes streaming as Alexandra banged her back hurriedly, Skylar managed to swallow her mouthful as she glared at the grinning Alpha in front of them.
‘Are you trying to kill me?’ she growled in annoyance, scowling as Jackson sat down across from them, pulling out his own lunch box.
‘Of course not Sky, but from the noises you were making, I'm sure if I had, that you would have gone out happy’ he added with a smirk.
‘Haha, you are sooo funny’ the Omega grumbled as she took another bite. ‘What are you doing here anyway?’ she demanded watching Jackson who shrugged easily.
‘Can a man not just want to eat lunch with his new friend and her friend uh . . ‘he added as he looked over at Alexandra, his eyes blinking rapidly as he took in the red head who was studying him sternly.
‘Alexandra’ she replied evenly, holding out her hand for him to shake.
Jackson took it, his gaze fixated on her until she forcefully removed her hand from his again and picked up her own sandwich.
The three sat together eating, Skylar glancing around them and seeing the villainous glares she was getting from the jealous student body that surrounded their table.
Eating quickly, she shoved her lunch box back into her bag and jumped up, ‘OK I'm done, I have to go!’ she announced with a fake smile, ‘coming Alex?’ she added, giving the red head a meaningful look.
Standing up, Alexandra nodded, ‘yeah, I can’t bear to take another bite of this depression of a sandwich anyway’ she replied.
Nodding excitedly, Skylar grabbed her friend’s arm and started to steer her away from the table, halting suddenly as Jackson’s hand grabbed her wrist.
Looking back at him, she raised her eyebrows, as he cleared his throat, ‘I'll drive you home’ he said quietly.
‘No, no, it’s fine Jack, I'm sure you have plenty of people you need to see, I'll get the bus’ Skylar replied with a forced grin.
Jackson met the Omega’s gaze, holding it until she had to look away, ‘I will drive you home Skylar’ he repeated quietly, not letting go until she nodded in defeat.
‘Fine, I'll meet you by your car’ she replied with a huff before pulling her arm from his grip and speed walking toward the cafeteria exit, dragging Alexandra along with her.
