“Any luck?” Jules asked when he and Eddie bumped into each other in the lobby of the apartment building Thursday evening. It was obvious that Jules was on his way out, probably heading to the club from the way he was dressed—in black slacks and a light-blue dress shirt. It made Eddie feel decidedly underdressed even though he was also wearing slacks, but with a work shirt. “Nothing, damn it. It used to be easy to find something, even if it was janitorial. Not here, though. It’s like everyone and their brother got there ahead of me.” Jules gave him a commiserating look as he said, “Are you being too picky?” Eddie snorted. “Nope.
