An unsettling feeling filled my chest after the beta left but I chosed to ignore it, instead bringing my attention to Daphne whose eyes were filled with questions I didn’t think I was ready to answer.
“Did you find the man?” I asked her, referring to the man who had tried to defile me. To my relief, Daphne nodded.
“He’s been exiled by the Alpha so he’s most probably a rogue by now.”
“Which means it will be difficult to find him.” My brows furrowed. “What’s his name? Age and appearance like?” I didn’t manage to get a good look at him that day.
“He seemed to be in his twenties. According to the maids, his name is Olivier Hart and he was brought into the pack after Cora.”
If he came after Cora, that means he had only been with us for a few months at most. He got some nerves to have boldly committed such a crime without fear for his life but of course he’d already know that the Alpha would spare him, after all they were in cahoots with each other. I shouldn’t expect anything less from Skylar.
I still couldn’t fathom why on earth he had to take such drastic measures to get rid of me. I was never a threat to him, I complimented him well, I took care of the pack quite well in his absence, worked myself to the bones to make sure everything turned out well and yet, here I was, discarded like trash.
“Here, I made them draw me a sketch of him.” Daphne handed me the paper and my fingers traced the face of the man on the paper. I don’t think I have ever seen him before. Everything from that night was pitch black to me. I didn’t know what happened after or how we ended up naked without doing anything.
Something must’ve gone wrong somewhere.
Now I’m left with the big question. How am I going to find him?
“I know some people, but they work in the black market, if I can get this sketch to them—”
“It’s dangerous to go there, Daph.” I quickly cut her off. Going to the black market to hire guys wasn’t even an option. The place is a literal horde of scammers and dangerous people.
“There’s a quicker way to find him.” The shortie chimed in and we both looked at him at once.
“Ask Alpha Kaden for help.” He said, “If he deploys some of us, we’ll find him faster.”
I swallowed and looked away from him only to meet Daphne’s gossip filled eyes.
“Is his Alpha your mate?”
“Yes.” I answered simply, “And I’m not asking for his help.” It wasn’t a good idea to begin to throw my baggages on him. I know how much Alpha Kaden would be willing to help but the moment I begin to rely on him, I was afraid I would get used to it.
“What has Cora been up to?”
“I didn’t get a chance to meet her but last night…” Daphne trailed, monitoring my expression as she hesitated to speak but I urged her to continue. “… I heard she spent the night in the Alpha’s room.”
It wasn’t a surprise. It really wasn’t a surprise but I still felt that drop in my stomach, the twist and then finally, the emptiness.
…. Because I knew, she didn’t just spend the night in his room. He f****d her. Countless times. While I felt the excruciating pain again and again. Seeming like I was going to die one moment and seeing that I was still alive the next only for the pain to plunge into me once again like an axe right into my chest.
“Maddy…” Daphne touched my shoulder with her brows pulled down in worry. I managed a smile at her, squeezing her hands as I told her, “It’s fine. I already knew it.”
Her gaze narrowed in on me. “What do you mean by that?”
“Me and Skylar are still connected so I—”
“No way.” She whispered. “That means… last night you… oh no, Maddy, good goddess. Why? Why didn’t it break when I clearly heard you reject each other?”
“Did you forget, Daph?” I looked at her. “That year, we performed a special mating ceremony. The supreme Alpha is the only who can break our bond for us.”
“Why would you accept such a stupid thing?”
Right. Why did I do that? I guess I was too desperate to get away. To get away from my family and the Alpha at the time, currently the supreme Alpha was the only one who offered his hand to me, so of course I agreed to his terms. For once, I felt someone care for me like an actual father. Yes, I was that naïve.
“It’s time for us to—” I stopped, noticing the scent swirling in the air. A coppery or perhaps iron like smell just like blood filled my nose. I knew Daph and the shortie smelt it too when we all exchanged glances. Benny was the first to shoot forward.
I got to see his lightening speed that left both I and Daphne dumbstruck. And yet, it wasn’t close to the brooding guys that day. I think his name is Dylan. His speed was out of this world. It made me wonder if these people were made out of a different cloth from us.
I and Daphne followed Benny’s trail, running after him, feeling the smell of blood in the air getting thicker and finally arriving at a clearing where a half-dead body laid. Its face had been partly cut out, making whoever it was unrecognizable.
I froze, the horror of the sight in front of me making my stomach churn until I couldn’t take it anymore and retched out a stream of vomit along with Daphne.
I tried not to look at that sight, as I cleaned my lips, patting Daphne’s back before returning my attention on the blood soaked man Benny was pinning to a tree.
What in the goddess name is going on?!
