Working together

“What’s your name?!” Benny was asking the man whom he had pinned to the wall. Even with blood being the only scent dominating the air, I could still smell out that sewer kind of smell on him. He was a rogue. “Y-You interrupted my meal… you’ll pay.” he said sluggishly, his bloody lips curling into a smile before he broke out into a laugh, a deranged kind of laugh that instantly caused goosebumps to appear on my arms. “You’ll pay.” “Did he really eat this person?” Daphne released a shaky breath next to me as I gave her a nod. His bloody fingers, mouth and teeth should be proof enough. This man obviously wasn’t in his right mind. I let my eyes stray to the half-eaten body once again and I wondered what would make them do this. Eating a person was something I have ever heard about. I could see Benny’s popping veins as he tried to keep the rogue pinned before he whispered to him. “I’ll pay for your meal? Who’ll pay for his life then, you f*****g i***t?!” Benny threw him into the air and I could literally feel the reverberation as he slammed hard into a tree before collapsing onto the ground, limp… and dead. No, not dead. It opened its eyes and they were staring right at me, a smile in them. In the blink of an eye, he had disappeared from his spot. I only felt the breeze pass by me and the next moment, I felt his sharpened claws on my neck as he grabbed me from behind. I stilled in shock, Benny stopped in his steps, and Daphne was forced to take a step back. “Don’t do it!” Benny was shaking his head at him, panic appearing in his eyes. “I promise we’ll let you go.” “Does it look like I am at your mercy?” the rogue laughed, making my skin crawl. “This one seems fresh, one of us, the master would like her.” Benny suddenly threw his hands up in surrender then he took one careful step forward which prompted the man to dig his claws just a little bit into my neck, enough to draw blood. The shortie stopped in his tracks and at the same time, I mouthed something to him. To distract the rogue and I could escape myself. No amounts of words or surrender would make this person let me go. As he said, he wasn’t at our mercy in the first place. He just made it seem so. He was fast, even more than the shortie and he was strong too. Daphne understood my words quicker and she gave me a small nod before she looked at the rogue behind me. “What should we do for you to let her go? We’ll give you anything.” “Oh, I see she’s quite important to y’all. Makes it even better.” “She’s going to be the King’s wife.” Daphne stated which instantly made my eyes snap to her and my lips curled. That was a good move because now, she’d definitely get his attention. A slight pause from him at first. “The King’s wife could never be a rogue. Are you lying to me?” “I don’t have any reason to. If you check her right hand, she has the mark of the royals.” I could feel the Rogue’s eyes straining to my hands. I bet he was currently thinking he had gotten a good catch. “You,” he nudged me with his claws on my neck, “Raise your left hand and show me the mark.” I was glad he couldn’t see the smirk on my face. My eyes connected with Benny and I hoped he’d notice my signal and react on time or this could all go wrong. I slowly raised my hand to the Rogue’s face and once I saw how focus he was, searching for the mark, I nodded to the shortie and in no time, he had disappeared from his position, appearing behind us. Before the rogue could notice, he had already been striked. Benny pushed me away from him and they went tumbling down a sloppy hill. Daphne rushed to me, checking my neck which had already started to heal. At least Sage didn’t completely neglect me even though she still wasn’t talking to me. I went close to where they fell only to see Benny returning alone. “What happened?” I quickly asked him. “He escaped.” His eyes searched my neck and he took in a sigh of relief when he saw no signs of what just happened. “Why are you so anxious for me?” I couldn’t help but ask him. Even when that rogue had placed his claws on my neck, Benny had seemed so afraid and worried. “If anything happens to you, I’ll have to answer to my Alpha. It will be a miracle if he doesn’t kill me.” “Ohh… is he already crazy in love with her?” Daphne gave me a look and I shrugged her off. “You have no idea how it feels when you finally find your mate.” Benny told her and perhaps Daphne felt offended because she frowned. “Have you found yours then?” “No.” Benny swallowed. “Then don’t talk like you know how it feels.” “I do know how it feels. I have seen how it changes people.” Daphne rolled her eyes at that and I knew what she was thinking in that moment. Her own mate rejected her the moment he found her. That was another kind of trauma. “It’s getting late Daph.” I quickly changed the topic for them. “You should get going before Skylar suspects anything.” She nodded her head to that. “How are you going to find that man?” she said, referring to the sketch she had given to me. “I’ll figure it out.” I told her, giving her a hug. “Let’s meet here again in a week.” Daphne’s eyes skimmed over the half-eaten body laying a distance away. I could see how disturbed it made her feel before she left. My brows furrowed as me and Benny decided to bury it before we headed back to the Ember pack. It was quite late when we arrived. I immediately took a long shower and by the time I was out, a kind looking girl was waiting in my room. I c****d a brow at her, wrapping myself in only a towel. “Good evening, Luna.” She greeted quite bubbly, excited “My name is Aliya. I have been assigned to you, finally!” She was an omega with a pure aura around her and she was so beautiful. I couldn’t help liking her instantly. “Aliya is it? my name is Madeline. You can call me that for now since I am not your Luna yet. “But you’ll be soon. It’ll only be a matter of time for you to accept our Alpha.” “That confident look…” I let a smile hang on my lips. “Our Alpha is quite likeable. I mean what’s there not to like. He’s every girl’s spec.” “Is he now?” I instantly felt like gossiping with her. “Tell me more then… about him.” “Ohh…” she gave me that criminal look, glanced at the door then hurried to join me on the bed. “I’ll tell you a secret.” I leaned closer to her so she could whisper it to me. “He has actually been waiting for your return.” “Huh?” I said in surprise. “What does that mean?” “Our Alpha was pacing around today. I swear nothing ever gets him worked up like that. Literally nothing. Not even when he was about to succeed his father.” “Why do you think he is worked up because of me? I only just arrived yesterday.” She gave me a smile. “Our Alpha didn’t just find you yesterday. A few days ago, I overheard him telling Dylan about how he found his mate but didn’t claim her because she was married. By the way, are you really not longer married?” The smile on my face faltered after her question. “No. I'm not." She became quiet, probably noticing, how much this particular conversation was affecting me. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked.” “It’s okay, Aliya.” I forced a smile. “Now where is Alpha Kaden? I think I should meet him.” Talking about the devil, the door suddenly flung open and Aliya jumped in shock while I glanced at the entrance to see Alpha Kaden standing there. Aliyah bowed and quickly left, closing the door as I felt him approach me. “Alpha Kaden?” His eyes carefully looked at me, carefully searched my body as if he was looking for something. “I heard you got attacked.” Oh, Benny must’ve told him. I thought he wouldn’t to avoid getting in trouble. “He didn’t get to harm me. I am fine.” But I guess that wasn’t enough assurance for him since he suddenly covered the distance between us, his big hands wrapped around my neck, gently, causing a gasp to escape my lips as he tilted my head up, I could feel the heat of his gaze as they traced my skin’s most sensitive areas. I swallowed, breathing hard, waiting for him to finish checking, hoping he doesn’t finish. “Your wolf healed you.” He stated and I nodded my head. “I wasn’t hurt that badly.” “It wouldn’t have happened if you had let me go with you.” “It’s really nothing, Alpha Kaden.” I told him, especially when I noticed that he looked mad. “See, I look just fine.” “The situation could’ve been worse.” He said. “It’s my fault for listening to you.” His eyes dropped down my body and then was when I realized, or perhaps we both realized it, what I was wearing. A f*****g skimpy towel!
