Runaway Mate

We walk hand in hand and all eyes turn on us as we enter the massive dining hall. Looking at all these people, you would never guess that they can transform into vicious wolves.

"Good morning, everyone." Josh's voice booms and the room goes silent. Steven and Heather look at with with a smile and nod their heads. "It is with great pleasure, that I introduce you all to my mate, Jennifer." The next second, the room fills with claps and woots of excitement. A lot of people shout out congratulations and about time, making me smile even more. I can tell by their excitement how adored and close Josh is with his pack.

"A human? Really?" And just like that, my good mood is ruined. Not only Josh, but a few other growls were heard at that woman's remark. Josh starts to walk up to the woman, but Steven stops him. "YOU WILL NOT DISRESPECT A MEMBER OF OUR PACK!" He shouts at the woman who whimpers as Steven glares daggers at her.

"With all due respect, Alpha, she is not part of this pack yet." A feel my eyes burn with unshed tears and turn around, not wanting anyone to see how weak I feel. I should have known I wouldn't fit in here. I only turn around once I hear a loud smacking sound. I gasp when I see Heather standing in front of the woman now. From the red hand print on her face, I can tell that Heather had slapped her across the face.

"Jennifer is your Beta's mate. Even if she wasn't, she deserves respect regardless if she's human or not. Silver Moon is a pack that treats each other as a family. We are a strong pack not only because of our physical strength, but because of our respect to everyone we associate with. Something you clearly have forgotten."

I know I shouldn't condone a woman hitting another woman, but I felt joy seeing the Luna of the pack stick up for me. Someone she just met and barely knows.

"Hey, don't listen to her. She's just jealous." I look over at the familiar voice. I didn't even hear Alison or Stefanie approach me. "She wants to be human?" I ask confused. They both chuckle at my question. "Let's go to my room and chat." Stefanie suggests. I look over at Josh and he nods his head.

When the three of us reach Stefanie's room, they both jump on to her bed. "Her name is Nicole." Stefanie states. "She has had a crush on Josh since he arrived at this pack," Alison adds in. I feel angry and jealous. "Woah, calm down killer." Stefanie laughs out. "You have nothing to worry about." She begins to reassure me. "He has never been interested in her. He rejected her over and over again, saying he is waiting for his mate." Hearing those words made me instantly calm down.

"So, don't let anything she says get to you. Trust me, she's a b***h and will try to make you feel bad about yourself." Alison says in a serious tone. "Alison, chill." I watch her take a deep breath and relax. "Sorry. It's just that Nicole would always try to go after Zach after each time Josh turned her down."

"You don't need to apologize. I understand how you feel."

They both look at me with smirks. "What?" I question them.

"Tell us, between just us girls, how do you feel about Josh?" Stefanie asks with a raised eyebrow.

Just hearing his name makes my face heat up. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with me? "Umm.. I'm not sur- I begin to say but Alison cuts me off.

"Don't lie to us. We're your friends." I take a deep breath and gather my thoughts.

"I-I like how safe I feel when I'm around him. I'm obviously attracted to him, I mean, who wouldn't be? He's built like a god." I can't believe I just said that out loud.

"Don't be shy, go on." They both urge me to continue.

"I'm afraid of getting my heart broken." I notice how their faces both fall. "That won't happen. We promise you." Alison softly says as she hugs me. "How can you be so sure?"

"Josh is my best friend, and believe me, he has waited forever for you. The mate bond is something us wolves cherish and long for. Now that he has met you, he will never let any harm come to you. Emotionally or physically. All he wants it to make you happy and loved." Stefanie comforts me and joins in on the hug.

"So, he only wants me because of the mate bond?" I ask, already dreading the answer.
