Chapter 14 - Past
Running through the green lands of their pack, the children played happily while some adults worked on the farm, and others trained not much far from there.
In between their laughs, the pups ignored the warnings to be careful or to go play somewhere else while they enjoyed the day.
... After all, they just wanted to have fun like any other child...
However, amid everything that happened on that summer day, there was one of them who acted unexpectedly that morning.
... Not going along with his friends, the young Nicholas looked at the vines that were full of bunches of grapes as the harvest season approached, reminding him of his mother and the years before as he always helped her with the fruits...
Hearing his father's voice from afar, the Alpha's eldest son decided to join the man, who in that morning was training the other members of the Pack.
"DADDY! DADDY!" Running to William, Nicholas hugged his father's legs while Liam talked to his Beta before bending down to talk to him.
"Hi, pup." Without his old smile in his face, the Alpha said, messing up the pup's dark hair.
"Daddy, can I train with you today?" Excited, the little boy asked, smiling as he thought about touring the vineyards afterward as they used to do with his mother in the past.
"I'm sorry, Nico. I can't play with you right now." Getting up, he ignored the fact that the pup had said he wanted to train with him, not play. "We still have another hour and a half of training before I get back to the office to come back in time to lunch with you."
The sadness that grew in Nicholas's eyes because of his father's words was clearer than the blue sky, and Zeus couldn't bear to see his nephew like that.
"C'mon, Liam. You know that I can take care of the rest of the training for today, so why don't you take the day off and spend some time with Nico?" His friend's offer was tempting, but William couldn't even think of a break.
He knew what the pup expected from him, how much the little boy wanted to walk with him through their land as he used to, yet he didn't have the heart to do that.
... The memories of the past were still a great burden on his mind, and he always felt so guilty and useless when he thought about them...
"No, it's okay, Zeus. I can play with Nico later, right pup?" The brief happiness that appeared on Nicholas's face by the words of his uncle, was now gone when his father put his hand on his head without knowing that it would be the last time they would see each other.
... And that was William's biggest regret at the moment...
"It's an attack!" Like a powerful thunder on a stormy night, the female warrior screamed, leaving the forest as other warriors passed by her, going in the opposite direction, to help the others who stopped the trespassers in the woods...
Without thinking twice, William and Zeus soon became their black wolves that seemed to fly as fast as they ran while passing orders for the children and Omegas to be placed in a safe place, without anyone imagining that the Alpha's son wasn't there with the other children.
... Sulking in the middle of the woods, Nicholas played with a stick while discounting the anger that was felt for his father on the poor rocks in his path without thinking that a pair of eyes was watching him from the shadows.
Their presence being hidden by the smell of their land, after all... They belonged to the same pack.
So, it was already too late when he heard his father's message through his mind for everyone to go back to the Pack's house...
Unknown howls mingled with screams and scents that Nicholas didn't know, scaring the pup that, like his father, soon turned into his wolf.
Running back to the Pack's house, Nico suddenly stopped when a voice called for him, ordering him to go in the opposite direction.
... Nicholas didn't recognize their voice amind his fear, but the familiar smell of the Pack made the child trust them without thinking twice as any other pup would have done too... And the rest was an already known story in Coleman of the disappearance of the young Nico.
