Gabe
I watched her go, and I couldn’t help the smile that lit up my face. She was amazing. My mysterious unknown mate. And she was my mate, there was no doubt about it now. At first, I wasn’t sure. It wasn’t like I was used to be being around human women or even earth born shifters. The only human woman I knew properly was my adoptive mother.
So, I had followed her. Keeping my scent hidden and my body in the shadows. I had watched her as she greeted a tall dark-haired man and followed him somewhere that was warded against god knows what. Jealousy had raged through me.
Was that man someone she cared for? Someone she had planned to spend her life with. The jealousy was unexpected. An emotion I hadn’t felt before.
I didn’t have long to wait before she appeared back in the street though. And when she arrived in the run down warehouse that was some sort of underground nightclub, I knew I had my chance.
I needed to touch her again to make sure what I was feeling was the real deal.
I hadn’t been disappointed. My first feelings for her had been true. She was my mate, and she was spectacular. Not just the seductive way she moved but her power as well. It rolled from her in waves. An addictive blend that seemed to heat the blood in my veins.
Watching her go, I shook my head, spectacular didn’t even cover her. Young beautiful and with a body I couldn’t wait to explore. She was also powerful. A true mate for me.
Someone worthy of me.
Someone I had chosen.
And not someone who I was promised to before I was even a man. I was meant to marry some human girl. I had been “betrothed.” Since before I was born. But how could I tie myself to some weak girl when my true mate was so strong? I was a man, and I would choose my own destiny.
I wished I had got her name from her. Not that it really mattered. I would find her again. And when I did, I would be stealing more than a dance from her.
I wanted to taste her lips.
“Hello.” The female voice was soft. I came back to reality with a jolt. Tearing my eyes away from my mates swaying ass, I glanced down at the pretty woman smiling up at me. As gently as I could I removed her hand from my chest.
“I’m not interested.” I tried to smile. I was a red blooded man and she was a pretty girl, I should have been interested. But how could I be when the woman I really wanted in my bed was walking away.
“She won’t show you a good time!” The hand was back on my chest, her ragged nails digging in. They were as sharp as claws even through the thick material of my shirt. I threw a glance at that hand.
“I’m not interested.”
“I can show you a good time.” She reached up on her tiptoes, bringing her lips up to my jaw.
I shivered before I could help myself. Beautiful on the outside she might be but she felt all wrong. Like something rotten was inside of her. Hidden by her pretty outer shell.
“No thank you.” My fingers closed around her wrist, but her hand seemed to be glued to my chest. I was powerful, stronger than any shifter I knew but I couldn’t move her hand.
My eyes narrowed as I stared down at her. “What are you?”
“I want you to come with me.” She muttered like I hadn’t said anything at all.
“Hey again.”
My eyes widened as my mate came into view behind the woman’s back. She had appeared like smoke amongst the dancing people. A wide smile on her face.
“Missed me?” Throwing back her head she laughed. “You have some dubious taste I have to say. A dead thing really?”
I watched open mouthed as she gripped the woman’s head in her hands. One brutal twist and what sounded like a twig snapping and my would be admirer fell to the floor, her eyes glassy and sightless.
“You broke her neck.” I blinked stupidly. Confusion clouding my thoughts. What the hell was wrong with the women of this world? Were they all complete psycho?
“Yeah, well that’s kind of my job.” She gave a shrug. “You don’t have to thank me or anything.”
“Thank you? You broke a girl’s neck for talking to me, but you won’t tell me your name? I’m kind of getting mixed signals.”
Gathering up her long dark hair into a ponytail she studied me like I was stupid. “The girl was a soul eater. One of the councils’ experiments. I didn’t kill her because I was jealous. I killed her because she was going to do some unspeakable things with your soulless body if she got the chance. “ She glanced down at the hand I had curled around her wrist and then back up at my face. “It wasn’t because I was jealous.” She added again.
“Not even a little jealous?” I tightened my grip on her wrist. I wanted to pull her back into my arms. But I knew we didn’t have time for romance. Not with a dead girl at our feet.
Something that looked like laughter filled her eyes. “Maybe a little.” She finally admitted. “I should go, you should as well. Club Apex is no longer safe.”
“Tell me your name?” I needed her name at least. So, I couldn’t whisper it when I was alone in the dark of the night. “When can I see you again?”
My dark haired beauty smiled. “Tomorrow. You can see me tomorrow. I will find you.”
