Chapter Five

Ffion Club Apex. The last place shifters and paranormal’s could really meet without the council breathing down their necks. Our one little taste of what it used to be like before The Mad One had won and scattered the resistance into dust. It had an old school vibe. An industrial setting, the music was always too loud and the lights almost blinding in there flashing glory. I loved it here. This was the kind of place my mother would have frequented. I could see her dancing in the packed warehouse. Her arms above her head as she moved her body seductively in time with the music. It was so clear even when I knew it wasn’t the truth. My mother had never been to a warehouse club. Even when she was younger, before she had met my father, I had been told she was more classy than that. She had been dedicated to her work, drank white wine out of real glasses. She had the kind of life I had only read about. Everyone told me I looked like her but that’s where our similarities ended. I wasn’t like Ami Llewelyn. I wasn’t classy or poised. And I sure as hell wouldn’t have abandoned my children for power. I knew that’s not how the story got told but it was how I felt. She had chosen becoming the new Oracle over her own children. People could sugar coat it however they wanted. It didn’t change the fact. I was still bitter, but then didn’t I have every right to be? Couldn’t I be hurt? Yes, I had a job to do. And it was a job I did well but one day it would kill me.it was only a matter of time before the Council caught me.and when they did, they wouldn’t make my death quick. They would make an example of me. I would die in agony, probably screaming for my mother in front of the entire city. And even then, she probably wouldn’t even come to my aid. I was alone. I didn’t have friends. How could I when my entire existence had to be secret. The only person I could rely on was Rhyd. A crazy guardian didn’t count. Anton hadn’t cared about a single soul since his mate had been killed. He cared that I completed the missions that he gave me but not about me. Not really. In club Apex I could pretend to be normal. Well as normal as any of us were these day. I could dance and flirt. If anyone needed me, I was there. If the council attacked, then I was there. I was still doing my job but in a way that for just a few short hours I could pretend that everything was ok. That half the city wasn’t in ruins. That I didn’t live in a world where I wouldn’t live to see my twenty fifth birthday. Moving towards the centre of the dance floor, I closed my eyes. I didn’t know why I was thinking about the past or the future. One was already gone, there was nothing I could do about it now and the other wouldn’t come. Not for me. My hands above my head I shimmied, my hips moving back and forth as I lost myself to the feelings the music provoked in me. It was an old song, but of course it was. There was no music these days. The council had put a stop to that. Still, it was good to move. To let myself forget for a while and do nothing but move. Someone’s hand slipped across my hip. My eyes didn’t even open as with lightning fast reflexes I twisted his arm up and around. “No touching.” I hissed, my hips still moving in time. Everyone knew I didn’t like to be touched. They could look all they wanted but touching was out of the question.it didn’t matter how much I might crave contact at times. I would never put myself in a compromising situation where I couldn’t defend myself. A low chuckle filled my ears. And my eyes flew open. Easily like breaking my grip was nothing at all, the man from before slipped my grip. His hand came back down, settling again on my hip. His golden eyes bored down onto mine. And they were mesmerising. I could fall into those gold depths, drown in them never to be seen again. “Dance with me.” He started to move, awkwardly at first but he drew braver when I didn’t immediately pull away. I should have pulled away I knew that. I should have broken his arm, or maybe even his neck. “How did you sneak up on me again?” I sucked in a breath as he pulled me towards him. I had been held by a man before. Rhydian hugged me all of the time, but he was brother, and this was different. When Rhydian hugged me, I didn’t feel my heart slam against my rib cage. And he most definitely didn’t push himself into my stomach. I swallowed hard. “Dance with me and I will tell you.” He answered with a grin. He knew he had me. I wanted answers and only he could give them to me. “I don’t dance.” “Yes, you do,” He dipped his head down and for a second, I thought he was going to slide the sinfully full lips over mine. What would I do if he did? “I’ve been watching you dance since the moment you got here. The way you move reminds me of a cat.” Gold eyes crinkled at the edges. “Is that why you are, a cat?” “I’m not a cat.” I said before I could stop myself. damn him, a few seconds in his arms and I was already forgetting all of my training. First rule of staying alive in a council ruled world. You never gave out information about yourself. And for me that was doubly important. “You’re something.” He mused. “When we met earlier, I was sure Witch. A powerful one. You were all ice-cold fury but tonight you feel different. Hotter. and not just because you are sexiest woman in this place.” He chuckled. “So, what are you.” “A witch like you said.” He already knew that, so I wasn’t breaking any rules by confirming it. “But I think the deal was you answer my questions.” As nice as it was to be held by another living person who wasn’t my family. That had been the deal. “How did you sneak up on me? Twice you have done it now.” “Anyone would think no one had ever surprised you before?” I looked him straight in the eye. “They haven’t.” “You’re either really that good or deluded…” “I’m just that good. Now answer the question.” I was becoming impatient. “Would you believe that I am also that good? No?” thick fingers pushed my hair back behind my ears so he could bring his lips to it. His voice dipped to a whisper. “I have skills, skill you couldn’t even imagine and I’m not talking about sneaking up on you.” The innuendo wasn’t lost on me. I pulled away, breaking away from his arms. “Not skilled enough sorry.” Turning on my heel I stepped away. Only to be drawn to a halt as he closed his fingers around my wrist. “At least tell me your name? tell me when I can see you again?” Laughing I met his eyes. “If you have so much skill then you should be able to work it out…” walking away I could feel his eye watch me go. Turning slightly, I gave him a dazzling smile. “Gabriel.”
