Chapter Seven

895 Words
Ffion “Where the living hell have you been?” A gruff voice thundered from the kitchen when I snuck into the tiny apartment, I had grown up in an hour later. I froze. I knew that voice. It had been Shouting at me my entire life. Nothing I had ever done was good enough for my uncle and guardian. Anton had always had a short fuse but when the Mad one had killed his mate, he had lost any humanity that he had had. Which in my opinion couldn’t have been much at all. He was an ancient one. Older even than my father Dewi Llewelyn and that was saying something. In the end all the ancient ones fell into madness, especially if their fated mates lost their lives before, they did. One day it would happen to my parents. One of them would die, and the other would fall into madness. It would happen to me and Rhydian as well, if we ever found our soulmates. Except I had found my mate. Of that, I was sure. The feelings the handsome stranger provoked in me couldn’t be denied. Being close to him thrilled and terrified me in equal amounts. Gabe made me feel things I never expected to feel. And that scared me. If he was the Gabe who Rhydian thought, it was then he was the one I was destined to be with. We wouldn’t even have a choice. What we felt might not be real. And then there was the little matter of the prophecy. Us being together was the beginning of the end. “Hi uncle Anton.” I called back, straightening my shoulders. I could tell by my uncle’s voice that he was angry. Maybe even drunk. Neither one would surprise me. I didn’t want to face him, but I had no choice. My feet seemed to be made of lead as I trudged towards the sound of his voice. He was sat in a chair by the window. His coat and boots still on. There was mud and much darker strains on both. For all intents and purposes, he looked like he had just arrived. The scowl on his face told a different story. Anton had been waiting for me and he had been waiting for a while. I swallowed hard. “I…” “Where have you been Ffion Llewelyn?” He didn’t give me a chance to answer as his scowl deepened. “Your brother told me you have met the dragon Gabriel” “I met a dragon yes. I have no idea if it is really this Gabriel of legend. New dragons pop up in the city all the time.” I shrugged trying to make out that I was unconcerned. “And to answer your question, I was at Club Apex doing my job.” c*****g my head to the side I arched an eyebrow in his direction. I was tired of him treating me like a child. Tired of everyone treating me like a child. I hadn’t been a child for a long time. “Where were you?” Anton’s bushy eyebrows slammed down, a low threatening growl falling from his lips. “Where I was is of no concern of yours girl.” “See I think it does. This city is your home and yet you don’t do your part. You don’t help keep anyone safe. It’s always down to me and Rhydian and….” I froze as Anton’s hand swung back. Anton had spent years shouting at me, but he had never hit me. I should have been afraid, but an icy kind of calm settled over me instead. If his hand made contact with my face, he would regret it. “You were seen Ffion.” Slowly his hand fell to his lap. He looked sheepishly at me through his eyelashes. “Dancing with a man. That is not doing your job.” Blowing at the breath I had been holding I frowned. “I don’t see what the problem is. If this man is really Gabe, then isn’t he who I’m meant to be with? Isn’t he meant to bring us hope?” “You are too young to understand Ffion. Things don’t always turn out the way we hope. Friends become enemies.” He shook his head. “Go to bed now child. We will talk more in the morning.” “I am not a child and the only reason I don’t understand is because no one tells me squat. If you told me then I’m smart, I would be able to catch up.” Anton shook his head. “It is not my place to tell you. I will call your parents and have them explain…I will….” I opened my mouth to complain and shut it again with a snap. I knew I wouldn’t be able to win this argument. “Fine I will go to bed.” “You aren’t to leave the house until your parents have spoken to you Ffion. Is that understood?” I nodded in agreement. I would agree with him to keep the peace but was I hell staying locked up like some precious princess. I needed answers. And maybe Gabe would be able to give me them. Or maybe I just wanted to see him again.
