Chapter Fourteen: Frist Job

1182 Words
Jezebeth and I waited on the first floor for Officer Natalie for our first job assisting her. I smiled when I saw Alice get her bracelet at the front desk. “Hey Alice!” I called her over. Alice walked to us. “Oh hey, I can guess you’re both waiting for your officer right?” Assisting officers on missions was something that happened only on the weekends so a lot of us were waiting for our officers today. We had already gotten our bracelets since Jezebeth was excited and wanted to be ready early. I'd be lying if I was worried about her excitement but it was cute so I didn't let it bother me. I was just scared she'll like this too much and want to stay. “I’m assisting my father, he says we’re going to take a high ranked job. Do you guys know what rank your job will be?” She asked. It was weird having such a casual conversation with Alice when she used to be so mean to us but it was nice. I shook my head. “Not yet, she said we could choose but this is our first so I don’t want anything too hard.” Alice chuckled. “You need to push yourself Ruth or you’ll never get as far as you could.” She shrugged. "My first mission was a medium ranked mission and honestly I would have preferred something that would have challenged me even more because then you learn more. It also adds pressure and pressure motives you more." I shrugged. “I guess you have a point.” I looked around. “No Grace?” I was surprised they weren’t together. Alice looked at Jezebeth then at me. “She decided to sign up with a different officer and she spends time with Zander. We can be separated unlike you two, no offense...” I didn’t take offense because I liked being attached to Jezebeth. “I’m going to get going since I see my Dad over there.” She said before she walked to him. Jezebeth leaned her head on my shoulder. “So you two are friends now?” “I like to think so.” I chuckled nervously. "Alice is a little complicated." Complicated didn't have to be a bad thing, I liked it on Alice. Natalie walked to us once she got to the first floor. “Okay it’s good that you two already have your bracelets on so we can get going.” We followed her into the elevator. “How often are we going to assist you?” Jezebeth asked. “You could assist me every Saturday or every other Saturday, it’s up to you two.” Natalie answered. Jezebeth looked at me waiting for me to comment. “We’ll make up our minds after we see how today goes.” I said and we followed Natalie out of the elevator and onto the eighth floor. “You’re only allowed to come up here when called up by an officer or accompanied by an officer. This is where the board for jobs is. We used to be assigned jobs but now we pick our own.” Natalie said as we walked down the long hall and stopped once we reached the board. The board took up a lot of the wall and had so many listings. “Okay you two can choose one of the low to medium ranked jobs to assist me on.” “What about one of the higher ranked jobs? I mean we are on the advanced track.” I asked while thinking about what Alice said. Natalie looked at the board. “You're still only freshmen so you really don’t want to choose a higher ranked job for your first one. Even the medium and low ranked jobs are challenging even if you're only assisting. There are times when we might get separated so you have to be ready. It’s better to work your way up.” I sighed. “Okay.” I looked at Jezebeth. “You should choose, I’ll be fine with whatever you want us to do.” Jezebeth wanted to do this a lot more than me. I didn’t even want to do any jobs for the order. I didn't think that changed but Alice just made me feel like this was a lot more important than it is. Jezebeth looked at the board and pulled down a listing. “What about riding a fairy village of low class demon spirits? It's a medium ranked job but I’ve dealt with getting rid of demon spirits before.” She said and it impressed me to hear. “Good choice Jezebeth, since cities, villages, towns, and even individual families have a lot of problems that only trained magic users can deal with they send their listings to The Order.” She explained as we walked back down the hall. "Sometimes they put them up on notice boards in their area but if they don't have luck with that or they don't have many freelanced sorcerers in their area then they send their listings here." I pressed the button for the elevator. “So those are all the listing from all the people who ask The Order for help?” I asked. Natalie shook her head. “The head officers filter them out, there are certain jobs we can’t accept.” I didn’t like the sound of that because what’s the point of helping people if you don’t give everyone an equal chance to be helped. “If a listing we receive doesn’t make it on the board then there’s a good reason for it.” I had a hard time believing her. We walked into the elevator and went to the first floor then we left the building. We followed behind Natalie at a distance. “I’m kind of excited…” Jezebeth mumbled in a tone I found cute. “I haven’t been around low class demons since we snuck out to no man’s land three years ago… I miss them.” It seemed like a strange thing to say given the nature of low class demons. “What do you mean you miss them? Aren’t we going to kill them when we get to the village?” I asked. Jezebeth played with her fingers. “Mm you don’t have to kill low class demons to get rid of them, some of them only kill in defense. They’re not sentient, they don’t understand a lot… they’re kind of like animals but there’s still a slight difference in behavior between low class demons and demon animals.” She knew so much about demons but it made sense given where she grew up. “We’ll probably have to fight them if it gets to that point but killing isn’t necessary. Do you think The Order kills when it’s not necessary?” She whispered her question. I looked ahead to Natalie. “I guess we’re going to figure it out soon…” I said nervously. I was worried Jezebeth would have to witness something she’d find very immoral. Maybe it’s what she’d need to see to prove to her that The Order isn’t a place she’d want to stay. I don’t want her to stay.
