Chapter Sixteen: Who do you like?

1113 Words
Ruth’s P.O.V. I stared at Zander and Julie who wouldn’t stop questioning me after I got out of detention. “What do you mean? Alice and I just had fun.” I answered when they asked why I looked so happy. “In detention?” Julie scoffed. “How did you have fun in detention?”  I didn’t feel like explaining myself but I did anyway. “We communicate telepathically.” I shrugged. “We just talked for the hour of detention and that’s what made it fun I guess. When you’re with a friend it’s not hard to have fun no matter where you are.” I started walking. In the dentition Alice kept sending me her thoughts. I'm able to restrain myself from purposely reading thoughts but when I'm around someone who knows I'm a psychic they send me their thoughts by intentionally opening their minds to me. Then I just decided to speak with her telepathically and it felt good to hear her in my head.  Zander and Julie followed after me. “If you like Alice you can tell us.” Zander said. "We're your friends." I started laughing awkwardly. “I don’t like Alice, she’s just really talented and pretty.” That wasn’t enough for them so they kept pushing. “I could ask Grace to ask Alice if she likes you.” He offered. "I'll text you as soon as Grace tells me the answer." “Or maybe Ruth likes someone else.” Julie suggested. “Someone a lot closer to her.” She said but I ignored her comment. I sighed and stopped in front of the library. “I have to go guys, can we drop this conversation? I’m not interested in anyone and I don’t want to be.” As I said that and locked eyes with Alice when she stopped in front of the library and now my face was red. As soon as Zander and Julie saw Alice they left quickly.  “What was that about?” Alice asked before she walked into the library and I walked in after her. I chuckled. “They’re being childish by insisting that I like someone.” I whispered since we were in the library.  Alice sat down at an empty table. “Well do you?”  My heart raced and I felt like I was going to panic. “I don’t think so. I don’t have the time to since I’m working on improving my magic and psychic ability. I also have to help you find out what’s going on with us and help Jezebeth with something too.”  Alice nodded. “Exactly, there are more important things than boys. I’m not really sure what’s all that appealing about them.”  I shook my head. “Boys aren’t really my problem.” I buried my face in my crossed arms on the desk. I heard Alice open a book. “Oh I'm guessing you like Jezebeth then? You both make it kind of obvious.”  My heart was racing even faster than before and I felt like it was going to burst out of my chest onto the table. “No I don’t like Jeze, she’s my best friend.” Being a Best friend was such a better position than being a girlfriend to me. “That’s a relief.” She mumbled. “You know because you’re already so busy…” She cleared her throat. “You could still make time for other things, well as long as you’re sneaky enough. You can sneak some things by the officers but not a whole relationship.” I lifted my head up and scrunched my eyebrows. “What? Are you talking about…?” “Hooking up? Yes, that’s what I’m referring to.” She rolled her eyes. “A lot of people do it without the officers finding out. I even heard the seniors rent hotel rooms in the city for sex.”  I started tapping my fingers against the wooden table. “I mean I guess some older students here are ready for that kind of thing…” Then I asked a question I didn’t want the answer to. “Have you ever hooked up with anyone here?”  I heard laughter come from Alice’s mouth. “No, not here I don't want to get involved with any student here because it'd be complicated and get in the way of my studies. Although I have made out with a few girls in the mage city when me and Grace go out at night on the weekends.” I was surprised and a little irritated by her answer. She looked at me. “Have you never?” She laughed a little more. “Ruth I know about how important focusing on magic is but that shouldn’t mean not experiencing life. We are still teens so act like one a little.” I shrugged. “I just don’t need stuff like that.” “Let’s go into the city Friday night and I’ll show you what you’re missing.” It sounded like a date to me until she said, “If you don’t like any of the girls there then we can leave and you can come back to your spell books and lonely meditation.” “Okay I’ll go but let’s stop having this conversation and research the moon goddess and strange psychic abilities, please.” I begged. Alice laughed. “Okay, okay.” We got up and grabbed a few books. We thought this research could give us an idea of what’s going on with us.  I stopped reading and looked at Alice. “Do you know how to do blood based magic?”  She took a while before answering, “No.” She answered but it didn't seem like she was telling the truth. “We haven’t been taught it and won’t be.” I didn’t say anything else because I didn’t want to push it. After we finished researching we discussed what we found. “The moon goddess has different sets of psychic abilities she gives. The basic set of psychic abilities she gives which are what I have are." Then I listed them, "Telekinesis, astral protection, telepathy, empathy, and reading energy.”  Alice closed all her books. “But there are also other abilities that she gives, like precognition, retrocognition, channeling, pyrokinesis, and others. She rarely gives those because she only thinks they’re necessary in specific instances otherwise they could be used immorally and/or dangerously. We just need to research these psychic abilities and see if they correlate with what we’re experiencing.” I closed all my books. “Okay, let’s do that, we can both check out a book about a different kind of ability each week until we find the one we might have if it’s any of these.” We put the books away and checked out one on the ability we choose.  We left the library. “Bye, Ruth I’ll see you tomorrow in class then in detention." She waved. "Don’t forget about our plans Friday night. Oh and wear something at least half decent.”  As she walked down the hall I couldn’t help but stare at her, maybe I did like Alice but does that mean I have to do anything about it? I have to tell Jezebeth, she'll have good advice.
