Hiding From The Past

“There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.” ― Oscar Wilde Sienna POV “Nurse? When can I leave? I have classes to attend and it is only my second day,” I moaned as the nurse walked over to me and pulled up my chart at the end of the bed. This was so embarrassing. Why the hell did I faint after using my powers? That had never happened to me before but then I had never felt so much powerful energy all in one go like that. It was like I was possessed or drunk on it. “Your stats are looking good but it says here that Arius wants to come and check on you himself before you leave. So as soon as he has been able to do so, you are free to go,” she smiled and walked away. I sighed angrily and dropped my head back on the fluffy pillow. Why did he need to see me? Oh s**t. Of course. He was going to come and tell me that I needed to be moved to the beginners' classes after last night's display. But that would make it so much harder to get in with these elites and find out information. It was clear to see there was an unspoken hierarchy in the school much like in any school. The advanced students were the popular ones who were seen as the most powerful and seemed to know everything that went on in this place and gained the most respect from other students. If I was taken out of their class and dropped to the bottom of the ranks, it would make this mission ten times harder. It was a few more hours of utter boredom before the man himself appeared. Seeing him again gave me that odd feeling once more. In my mind, when I think of this man, I am full of hate, but whenever I actually see him, it seems to waver. Was it his powerful yet calming aura? Was he able to manipulate people’s emotions? There had to be a reason for it, because I loathed this man more than anything. “Miss Stone, you had quite an eventful first day, it seems,” he smiled cheekily, his blue and brown eyes twinkling in the sunlight that was streaming through the window. “So it seems,” I replied. “I have spoken to the doctor and he said you are cleared to leave but I wanted to check on you myself first,” he explained, pulling a visitor's chair over to the side of my bed. I eyed him suspiciously as I watched his every move. He moved with the grace and agility of an angel, yet I knew a darkness lurked beneath his skin. “I am fine. I just got a little carried away in my first lesson. I didn’t realise how much of my energy I was using up. It won’t happen again,” I stated with confidence and he tilted his head to the side with a small smile. I had to look away from him. The kindness and understanding he was faking was irritating me too much. “I don’t think you got carried away, Sienna. I think you revealed exactly who you are.” My head snapped up to his calm face and I felt like my heart was in my throat. What did he mean by that? Exactly who I am? “A very powerful fae. We have never had any student who could manipulate all four elements before. It is a very rare gift to have.” I breathed a sigh of relief at his words. I hadn’t been rumbled on my first day here, thank god. “Oh right,” I shrugged nonchalantly. He chuckled lightly, “Oh right. You don’t seem surprised?” “Should I be? You say it is rare but not impossible.” “Good point. It is just… normally these traits are genetic. I know you don’t know a huge amount about supernaturals, but our bloodlines are important in deciding just how powerful we become. Do you mind if I ask you some questions about your other abilities that you know of so that we can get a better idea of how to tailor your education?” It was a diplomatic question. He didn’t want to tailor my education. He was being nosy and wanted to make sure I wasn’t too dangerous for his precious academy. “Sure. Why not?” I responded. “I am going to reel off some common fae abilities first. Are you able to charm?” I narrowed my eyes at him, not quite understanding his question. “Charm?” “Yes. It is almost like hypnotising someone. It mainly only works on humans but you give off a seductive quality that makes them warm to you and they will often do what you ask them to. Vampires have this ability too, but we call it glamouring.” I thought back to all the times I had given off my fae allure when I wanted something that was going to take too much work to get. I did it to Archie when he was trying to talk to me about our relationship and all I needed was for him to f*ck me. I just hadn’t realised what I was actually doing was using a fae power. “Yes.” He nodded. “And you have enhanced senses? Sight, hearing, smells etc?” “Yes.” “Good. What about telepathy? Can you read people's minds or have telepathic conversations?” I frowned. “No. Not with people.” “But you can with…?” “I have always felt a connection to animals. I can sense what they are feeling or thinking. Simple commands or needs seem to come across to me.” “Interesting. And what about travel? Can you create portals?” “Only between places I am familiar with,” I replied honestly. He rubbed his chiselled jaw and studied me closely. I tried not to let his penetrating gaze intimidate me. “Do you have any other powers or abilities, Sienna?” There was something about his tone that sparked warning bells in my mind. I wasn’t going to give any more information about myself. It was becoming too risky. He didn’t need to know that I could create disguises, produce convincing lies or have affinities, like once I learned something, I could do it effortlessly. “No. That is all I know I can do,” I shrugged. “What about dark magic? I saw you had requested to attend those classes. Do you think you may possess witchcraft abilities too?” “No. It just interests me and, as some of my fae abilities are quite similar to witchcraft, I thought it would be a good idea.” “I am sorry to bring this up, Sienna. I know it is a sensitive topic for you, but do you have any idea or information about your father? Where is he from? What is his name? Is he still alive?” I forced myself to remain calm. “No. He and my mother had a one-night stand. She didn’t even know his name,” I lied using my powers now. “Did she ever give you a description of him? Perhaps, we could look for him. He may still be-” “No,” I said a little too sternly. The last thing I needed was for my enemy to go digging around in my past and trying to find out who my father was. I knew my biological father was dead but they didn't. Checking myself, I took a deep breath before replying calmly. “She never spoke about him. I know nothing about him except that he must have been fae because I started to get my powers at the age of four.” “Four?” Arius seemed surprised by that information and I chastised myself internally. I was off my game. I needed to get myself out of this quickly before I said something that would f*ck everything up. “Yes. Like I said. I know nothing about my father and I do not want to. Please respect my wishes and do not try to find him. I have no interest in knowing him.” Hopefully that was convincing enough as he gave me a warm smile and reached for my hand, patting it as he stood up. “Of course. Not all fathers deserve to be in their child’s lives. If that is your wish, I will respect it.” “Thank you,” I said timidly, praying I had done enough to stop him from prying into my background. “Okay, well you are free to leave the hospital but you are on strict instructions to take it easy today. Classes will resume for you tomorrow.” “But-” “No negotiations, Miss Stone. Take it easy today,” his authoritative voice made me recoil before he walked away. This was definitely not the best start to my time here. This little mishap had already put me behind in finding out information about the silver-eyed man. If it wasn’t for being stuck in this hospital all day, I would have already met him in defence class earlier. On my way back to my dorm, I stopped by the cafeteria to get some decent food. Piling my plate high with the exceptional cuisine they served here, I made my way to an empty table to eat in peace. That was short-lived when Harrison bounded over, throwing his bulky body down on the bench opposite of me, causing my plate to wobble on the table. “Missed you in class today! I heard you managed to take a trip to the on-site hospital on your first day. I think that is a new record in the school,” he teased. “Haha,” I replied sarcastically while I popped a strawberry into my mouth. “Seriously though, are you alright?” his sharp features creased with concern and I wanted to laugh, but I knew that would be rude. I couldn’t be the heartless b***h I really was if I wanted to keep him sweet. “I’m fine. Thanks for your concern,” I smiled at him, which he returned before stealing a grape off my plate. “Hey! Get your own! I never share!” “Nor do I,” he gave me a knowing look. “When I see something I like, I take it.” I giggled like a girl who was enjoying his flirtation when really I wanted to give him a snarky comeback. Suddenly, the table shifted again when Neve took the seat next to me, throwing her arms around my shoulders as my whole body stiffened. “Si! You are alive. I have been so worried!” “I am sure you have,” I smirked as she quickly let go of me to grab some chips off my plate. I ground my teeth together. What is with these kids taking my food? “Get. Your. Own!” I snarled at her and she laughed heartily, thinking I was joking. “You are so lucky you got to laze around in bed all morning while we were put through hell in the defence class! Even Harry here was lagging by the end,” Neve teased and I raised my eyebrows at him in question. His face contorted to anger. “I was not! I could have gone for another two hours easily.” Neve scoffed. “Yeah, alright. Raiden asked about you by the way.” She nudged my shoulder with a suggestive expression on her face. “About me?” “He was only asking where you were when he took the register. Don’t make it more than it was Neve, you are such a drama queen,” Harrison interjected. I kept quiet as they continued to bicker back and forth. “So what is this full moon party tonight that I have been hearing about?” I interrupted. Both their faces lit up with excitement at my mention of it. “Oh my goddess! Are you coming? You have to come! I will be able to introduce you to everyone and we can really let our hair down!” Neve was practically bouncing in her seat. “Yeah you should come. I will be there,” Harrison winked at me from across the table. “Don’t tell her that! We are trying to persuade her!” Neve shouted and he growled at her. “I am up for it. Is there anything I should know in preparation? A dress code etc?” I asked casually. “No, but you can borrow one of my dresses. Don’t worry. It is just a huge party by the lakes. It started as a werewolf party years ago as they would celebrate the full moon, but soon all the species latched onto it and it just became one giant orgy!” Neve explained. Yeah, me in one of those dresses is not going to happen. “Ooo fun,” I replied with a smile. It sounded like my idea of hell, but seeing as I had been out of action all day, I needed to start making moves. “Will the Romano Black triplets be there by any chance?” “Yea, they are coming. They are never ones to miss a good party. Why?” “I’d just like to meet them, that’s all. They seem interesting.” “They are,” Harrison stated. “They keep themselves to themselves most of the time, but they are nice people. Charming and surprisingly down to Earth, but if you get on the wrong side of them, they could destroy you.” “But they won’t!” Neve interjected, giving Harrison a glare. “You don’t need to be afraid of them.” “Oh I’m not. Just interested in meeting them,” I clarified. Just then, over Harrison’s shoulder, I spotted Amelie walking into the bustling hall with none other than my best friend. Valentine was already sporting a champagne coloured silk dress like the other girls and I smiled widely, knowing she would be hating it with every fibre of her being. We locked eyes across the room and she smiled briefly before I moved my gaze to Amelie. She waved enthusiastically at me and I gave her a small wave back, which caused Neve and Harrison to turn and see who I was saying hello to. “Oh look, Amelie has a new pet,” Harrison chuckled. Amelie seemed to be a golden girl at the academy, never putting a foot wrong and wanting to please as well as be everyone’s best friend. It seemed Val was her new bestie. “Another newbie! Where is this influx coming from?” Neve joked and I lowered my gaze to my plate. “By the way, you have made quite a first impression! You will be more famous than the triplets by the end of the day.” “What do you mean?” My head snapped at hers as she regarded me with a proud smile. “Four elements! It is nearly unheard of! The last Fae who had that much power was royalty!” Harrison nodded, “The Fae Princess Florence. You will learn about her in your History of the Fae classes, I am sure.” I shrugged my shoulders, not really understanding what the big deal was. The mention of my fae abilities would always stem back to my heritage and the last thing I needed was everyone digging into my past, especially when they could never find out how I was conceived or more importantly when. “I don’t really see what is so amazing about it. Hopefully, everyone gets bored and moves on to more interesting gossip soon,” I replied and Neve giggled. “Girl, it is better to be talked about than not in this place! You need to make a name for yourself and you are doing that by just being you. I love it.” I groaned as I thought of one of Oscar Wilde’s sayings from my mother's books. “There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.” Hopefully, that was the case for me.
