The Phoenix
Sienna POV Oscar Wilde once said, “Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.” Unfortunately for the man I am about to meet, I don’t agree. For my own sanity, for the purpose of my entire being, I will never forgive my enemies. I will make every single one of them pay. Pulling out my compact mirror from my handbag, I checked the new silky black hair, heavily made-up face that highlighted sparkling blue eyes and practised my most alluring smile. This would do. It’s not like I needed him to fall in love with me, just to want to drink my blood dry, which shouldn’t be a problem. Leaning against the brick wall outside the trendy bar, I couldn’t help the shiver that ran down my spine from the chilly evening breeze. What did I expect wearing only a skimpy, black sparkly dress which barely covered my ass and patent stilettos in this weather? But I had to look the part. And there was no thrill quite like killing your enemy in six-inch heels. Suddenly, the vibration of the phone in my hand alerted me to the message I had been waiting for. Ronnie, my handler, gave me the all clear and informed me back-up was ready if needed. I wouldn’t need them. I never do. Turning on the body cam that was disguised as my dangly gold earrings, I inhaled the crisp evening air. Quickly, I checked the dating app again to memorise his face so I didn’t accidently kill the wrong man. There he was staring through the phone screen, gorgeous and inviting with his smouldering dark eyes and tousled blonde hair. His profile was set up to seem too good to be true, trapping innocent girls who were desperate to find that perfect man. He was a charity worker, owned a dog, lived in a huge suburban house just outside of the city, enjoyed sports and had a body to show for it. Of course, that was all a lie. He wasn’t just your run of the mill catfish. Kieran Valenda was a vampire. And one that has been using dating apps to prey on human girls, have s*x with them and then drink them dry after. Because that is what their kind do. That is who they are. Monsters. But his reign of terror ends tonight. No more innocent humans will die by his fangs because he is about to meet his own death. Me. Flicking my hair over my shoulder, I forced a smile and waltzed into the Manhattan bar with an air of confidence. I spotted him quickly. It was hard not to. He was definitely a man who stood out in a crowd with his mysterious aura and striking looks. He sensed my arrival and smirked, his eyes travelling up and down my athletic body appreciatively in this figure-hugging dress. “Jolie?” The smoothness of his voice sent rage coursing through my veins, but all he would see was a confident and seductive expression. I always used my mother's name as an alias for these jobs. It seemed only right when it was her that I was avenging. “Kieran? Wow, you are even better looking in real life! How is that possible?” I flirted, causing his brown eyes to twinkle as I perched on the bar stool next to him. “Why, thank you. You look incredible yourself. Good enough to eat,” he licked his lips provocatively and I had to refrain from rolling my eyes. “Can I get you a drink?” “I thought you’d never ask,” I giggled like a giddy teenager. It was easy to play this role. Not only had I had years of intensive training but the fae blood running through my veins allows me to tap into my abilities to produce convincing lies. He wasn’t the only one who was in disguise tonight. After more tedious flirting and drinking, I was starting to become impatient. I wished I could just kill him here on the spot, but we were among humans all enjoying their Saturday evening. Part of my job was to be discreet. A silent assassin. “So do you have any family close by?” He asked as he took a sip of his beer and then ran his tongue over his lips to mop up any froth that had remained behind. My mind instantly went to a dark place. How I would love to rip that tongue from his throat. It would be so nice to see his blood spill across the granite bar. “No. My mother died when I was a child and I don’t see my father very often. Only child too,” I said sweetly, brushing a strand of the illusive raven hair from my face. Of course, his smile grew upon hearing this information. I was his perfect victim. A young woman, alone in the world and desperate for attention. No relatives nearby means less mess to clean up after his kill, not that that has stopped him with his past victims. Leaning into him, I placed my hand on his thigh and batted my eyelashes. I needed to speed this up. The longer I was stuck in his company, the more agitated I was feeling inside. “How about we go somewhere a little more… intimate?” I ran my finger down his chest and tugged at one of his shirt buttons playfully. His expression darkened with lust and I saw the hunger in his eyes. “I have a hotel room just down the road,” he smirked, and I sat back, grabbing my bag off the bar. “Then what are we waiting for?” I met his heated gaze with a smile. Keeping up the façade, I stumbled in my heels pretending the alcohol had affected me, leaning into him and giggling as he led me down the street. I knew we wouldn’t make it to the hotel. That’s not his style. He kills his victims in parks and alleyways, only to dispose of their bodies in dumpsters carelessly. Right on cue, he grabbed my upper arm and spun me into his chest, slamming his cold lips against mine. I squeezed my eyes shut and focused on pretending to enjoy his slimy tongue in my mouth as he walked us backwards down an alleyway. As soon as my back hit the hard brick wall of a building, his hands were everywhere, groping my ass, then my t**s and pulling my dress up my thighs. I clawed at his black shirt, feeling his rippling muscles flexing beneath my palms to fake my desperation for this man. Even though I knew in my bones he was a vampire and the most recent cold-blooded killer on the streets of New York, I needed proof. I always needed proof before a kill. For my own peace of mind. Breaking away from his lips, I gripped the back of his hair and guided his kisses down my throat as I pressed my body up against his and moaned. That should do the trick. Just one little bite… Knowing a hungry and aroused vamp was always a split second away from losing control, I used my fae powers to create the illusion of my impervious heart to seem frantic in my chest. It did the trick as I felt his sharp fangs pinch and pierce the delicate skin of my neck immediately. I didn’t even feel the pain through my elated state as he took his first gulp. He was mine for the taking. Abruptly, his head snapped up when he tasted my blood and figured out I wasn’t exactly who he thought I was. Pushing at his chest, not quite using all my fae strength but enough for him to take a little notice that I was stronger than a human, his irises blazed that deadly shade of scarlet and he glared down at me. “What's wrong, Kieran? Lost your appetite?” I smirked. “You are fae!” he snarled, my blood dripping from his chin. He looked pissed. I smirked. He charged at me at lightning speed but I was ready. I used my power to freeze him for the few seconds my abilities allowed. It was enough time for me to grab his face in my hands. His eyes bulged as I allowed fire to flow from my fingertips, burning his flesh as his fangs extended even more and he howled in agony, stepping back. But I didn’t let him get away. Grabbing the thin, wooden stake from my bag, I stabbed him straight in the heart as his eyes dilated with shock and fury. “Why? You are one of us!” he roared. Allowing my fae magic to take control, I focused on creating scorching balls of fire with my palms and sent them flying into his chest. He cried in pain as the smell of burning flesh filled the air. “No. I am not one of you. I am more human than you will ever be.” With one violent tug, I snapped his neck and his body fell to the floor. I stared down at his scorched face before I pushed the wooden stake further into his chest, causing his whole body to stiffen before it turned to a dark mist of dust. Standing up straight, I brushed down my dress and leaned against the wall, waiting for my squad to arrive and clean up the mess. I closed my eyes briefly and released a long, drawn-out breath into the air. I didn’t enjoy killing people, but these weren’t people. Over the years, I have killed hundreds of supernaturals who were a danger to society. They thought they were above the law. They believed, because they were supernatural, they could do what they liked and get away with it. Who was going to stop them? I was. My name is Sienna Stone, but many people in my field of work know me as The Phoenix. I know what you are thinking… What a hypocrite. But I am half human and half fae. I have grown up with humans. I have lived a human life with a human family. I do not accept or connect with the fae part of me. I use it to my advantage, yes. I use it to rid the human world of species that do not belong here. I use it to protect and avenge. Even though it is my job, I have my own personal reasons for killing these creatures. My hatred for supernaturals runs far deeper than one could ever imagine. “Losing your touch little bird?” Ronnie smirked as he strolled towards me, pulling on his black leather gloves as the squad assembled and got to work removing any sign that Kieran Valenda ever existed. “You wish,” I scoffed as I pushed off against the wall. Ronnie was human and my handler, which means he is my right-hand man, if you will, in the SIA (Supernatural Intelligence Association) division, who briefs me on my missions and ensures I have all the information I need. He is also a spy and assassin and when he is on a job, I am his handler. He would have been top of our programme if it wasn’t for me. “You need medical assistance for that little slip-up?” He nodded towards the bite on my shoulder and I rolled my eyes. I let him think it was a mistake on my part. It was easier than having to explain my actions. “You know very well that I will be healed in less than an hour.” “I’ve got to say, I am loving this look! Very Angelina Jolie in Mr and Mrs Smith. My dream woman,” he winked as I started to walk past him towards the black SUV parked on the main road. “Urgh, I had better change immediately before you get any ideas,” I chuckled as I allowed my magical disguise to fade away and shook out the raven hair as it turned back to my natural strawberry blonde curls. My face morphed back to my own tanned complexion with amber eyes and I glanced over my shoulder to see Ronnie grinning like an i***t. “You know you are still my number one, Phoenix. I’d choose you over Angie any day,” he flirted, which caused me to raise my middle finger at him as I hid my smile. Ronnie and I hit it off in our first training session four years ago. I mean we literally hit it off. I annihilated him in the combat ring and we’ve been firm friends ever since. It doesn’t stop him shamelessly flirting with me at any given opportunity, but we both know he couldn’t handle me. He would sh*t his pants if I ever came on to him. “I won’t tell Boss you said that so you can keep your d*ck,” I shouted back over my shoulder. He chuckled and joined the rest of the team to clean up the crime scene as I climbed into the illegally tinted SUV. That’s one perk of being part of the SIA, they have leniencies for just about everything. I exhaled deeply as the car pulled away to take me back to my New York penthouse and I peered down to check the bite mark from that f*cker. I hated vampires, but they weren’t the worst. Hybrids were. Born of equal power of two different species and able to use both sets of abilities. I have come across many in the last few years. Wolf and Vampire. Vampire and Witch. Witch and Fae. The list is endless and they are always the hardest to track down and kill. Luckily, I have the element of surprise on my side. The supernaturals are not aware that the CIA knows of their existence or that they created their own subdivision (SIA) to spy and defend against their kind. That is what gives us the edge. No one expects a human girl to attempt to kill a supernatural being. NOTE: Hello lovely readers, old and new! I am so excited to be back with another supernatural romance for you all. This story will be written as a standalone book but it does include some references to characters and events from The Last Alpha Trilogy. It will still make sense for you to read it without having read the other three books, but if you want a more in-depth perspective on some characters (e.g. Arius or Sienna's parents' story), you may want to give the trilogy a read! :) I would love to know what you all thought of this first chapter and our new female lead Sienna. Please don't be shy and comment away, I love reading them and getting to know you all on this journey :) Aura Rose x
