“She’s a f*****g werewolf,” Collins voice was loud enough for Aurora to hear in the kitchen, where she was seated, rushing the meal that had been served to her, and she should not be eaves dropping on what the couple were arguing about but she couldn't help it. Her ears tingled and she wanted to understand what the two were arguing about.
“Shhh..” She heard Beth trying to shut Collins up “She can hear you,” She heard Beth inform her husband Collins, and that was the last she heard of their conversation. She heard a door open, and then she couldn't smell them again.
Aurora knew she was a werewolf, and Beth and her husband were humans but she just couldn't figure out what she was doing here and why it seemed like she was bothering Collins. Why did it feel like she was the only abnormal one around? Why did she feel like something was wrong with her? And why did she have no memories of where she was coming from or where she was going to? She certainly had a lot of questions to ask, and she could hear her wolf purring but she totally ignored, she had power to control herself and her wolf, and she strongly believed that she was not the only werewolf in this world, so why did she feel lonely?
Her wolf was unsettled, but these people seemed nice after all. So far, they had taken her in and clothed her, even given her food to eat and although this food did not satisfy her hunger, it was worth something at least and maybe she could wander out much later in the dark of the nights to hunt, but this could serve for now and she fought hard to control the burning need for flesh inside her.
Aurora was not stupid, far from it. Even though she had little or no memories, she took a good guess as to why the couple seemed to be arguing about her. They were humans apparently and just as Beth had mentioned, a lot of people, who she could not really tell if they were humans or whatever they were often showed up at their terrain, and they had helped a lot of them, and some had eventually turned out to be bad, at least that was what she gathered from what Beth had told her. They had even adopted someone who ran off after she had come of age, and from the looks of it, Collins had been attached to the little girl, that explained why he was not ready to help anybody anymore.
Aurora did not need them adopting her, she was big enough to take care of herself, or so she thought. All she really needed was somewhere she could lay her head for a while till she eventually figured out who she was, definitely she would remember. Wolves had packs, didn't they? And she belonged to a pack right? Maybe they would come looking for her but was not even sure she had a life before this.
That was exactly the problem, she was not sure if she had a life and she was also not sure why the wolf in her wanted blood so badly and she may not even belong to any pack, for all she knew, she could be the last werewolf on earth, and may even have her days numbered.
She rushed the meal, and she was done with it so fast. She got up from where she was seated and went to the refrigerator and sniffed. She could smell raw meat and her wolf wanted nothing more than to have a bite and much as she tried to control it, the urge was stronger than her. So she reached forth and grabbed the fresh goat meat that was being preserved in the fridge, she sniffed before taking a hard bite, and though it was hard, the smell was appealing, and she savoured in the taste.
“Another bite,” the Wolf in her plunged forward.
“Be still,” She argued and although reluctant, it seemed to obey her.
She took another bite before she heard Beth gasp “What are you doing?” the woman shrieked.
“I told you she was no good,” Collins answered from behind his wife, then gently shoved her aside and walked to Aurora, snatching the meat off her hands “If you want meat, you have to hunt for it, there are plenty of animals in the woods, you can have your pick from any that you so desire but you cannot walk in here, and feast of my hard work alright?” his eyes were blood shot and Aurora took two steps backward, using the cabinet to support herself.
“I’m sorry Collins,” She apologized to the man that was glaring at her as if she was from out of space, and even though her wolf was not sorry, she felt the need to have these two on her side after all, she did not know anybody or have anyone else.
“No you are not,” the man sneered “ And I will not have you cause a nuisance in my home, if you must stay then you must be well behaved no eating of food that was not assigned to you. Is that clear?” he looked at her with narrowed eyes and Aurora nodded.
She slowly backed away from the enraged man and made her way to the parlour, where Beth's eye were watching her. The woman too obviously did not approve of her character but Aurora pretended not to notice.
“Maybe I should just go,” She told the lady “Your husband doesn't want me here, and you don't have to pretend like you do because I know you really do not want me here,”
Aurora tried to pass the lady by the door way but Beth would not even move “I see you are one hell of a stubborn werewolf,” She looked Aurora from head to toe, and Aurora flinched, not particularly happy with Beth's choice of words.
“Why exactly would you even want me around? Of what use am I to you?” She asked Beth but Beth laughed out loud.
“You are not of any significant use to me,” Beth answered “And if you desperately want to leave, you can do so when the day breaks, but you must pass the night here, I don't think I would ever forgive myself if anything happened to you,”
Aurora stared at the woman then plumped herself down on the sofa, she wanted to cry, but her wolf wouldn't let her. The beast was stubborn, and Beth was right, that much was obvious.
Beth sat on the sofa across from her and Collins joined his wife.
“Look, I'm sorry if I come up too hard on you,” Collins apologised but it did not actually sound like what it was intended to. The man too was proud “ I'm sure my wife already explained what has been going on to you and much as I would like to help you, you also need to keep yourself in check. I’m not afraid of your type,"
Aurora saw Beth nudge Collins with her elbow but that did not stop the man from what he was saying “I may not have the strength anymore, but I respect my wife and I would do anything to protect her, but for some reason, she desperately wants to help you, and I would do anything to make her happy,” Collins crossed his hands across his wife's shoulders and a slight blush crossed Beth's cheeks “So please pass the night, and if before day break you remember who you are, you are free to go to your people. The night is cold and dangerous, and I know you do not want to be out there,” He looked at her as if waiting for her to affirm his words but Aurora just sat still and stared at them. They were good people and they meant well, so she relaxed.
Beth was a pretty woman. She was old, Aurora guessed probably in her mid fifties but her hair was devoid of any grey hair unlike her husband's and she was well rounded in the appropriate places. Her shoulders were firm, and her hair still retained the length and volume of a youth. She was beautiful indeed and Gabriella knew any man would do anything to make her happy, just as Collins had insinuated earlier.
“I'll stay till the morning “ She informed them, “Maybe I would be needing a change of clothes,” She stared distastefully at the garment that Beth had thrown her “but I appreciate your efforts to help me, and I promise not to cause any troubles till I’m gone,” Even Aurora was not convinced by her words, but she said it anyway and she just had to believe that she would take a nap and remember everything there was to remember, she was in the midst of good people and that should count for something at least.
“Good,” Collins quickly said and left to the bedroom. He looked tired and worn out already and Aurora somehow felt pity for him.
Beth stared at him as he left before focusing her eyes back to Aurora, “He’s not always like this I promise,” She searched the girls face “I don't know why I like you, maybe because it's been a while there was any adventure in this house, it's just been me and Collins and just between the two of us, I want you to stay longer, and please don't get me wrong, it’s no't like I don't want you to find your family, I just need someone around you know,” She smiled, then shifted in her seat uncomfortably when Aurora did not say a word.
“Come, I'll show you to the spare room, it’s a little dusty but you can manage for the night,” Beth got to her feet and motioned for Aurora to follow her, which Aurora gladly did, because she suddenly felt the need to be alone.
The room that Beth showed her was indeed dusty, and was stacked with plenty old suitcases as well as travelling bags. It had a small bed by the window and the drapes were dirty. Aurora stared at the old ceiling that had cobwebs hanging down it and it took all she could to prevent her from shaking her head.
“You can pass the night, I know it’s not all beautiful but it’s what we can offer now, and should you decide to stay, we will have it cleaned by morning, it’s really not as bad as it looks and I’m sure you can manage for the night?”
Aurora was not sure if that was intended as a question but she nodded anyway. She was almost feeling like this place was home.
A small candle burned besides the table that was stationed across the door. Someone had been reading there before she got here, and Aurora turned to Beth for an explanation, this wasn't her house and Beth probably owed her nothing, but she knew the woman was going to try to make her comfortable, Beth really wanted her to stay and her honesty was very transparent.
“Oh that's just Collins,” She waved her hands and quickly closed the book that was on the table, tucking it under her armpits “He likes to read about all these ancient myths but I always try to convince him to be more worried about the modern world. Civlization is upon us now but Collins will always be Collins,” She shrugged.
“Can I see?” Aurora asked but Beth took several steps back from her which was a little suspicious but Aurora was not in the least worried, she was already convinced that the woman meant well.
“It's not necessary,” Beth mumbled “Get some sleep now,” She told Aurora and hurried out of the room, shutting the door behind her.
Aurora dusted the bed severally before laying down, she needed a bath, but she was restless, she needed answers, she needed to find people like her, she needed to go for a hunt, and she craved some adventure, but she had to force herself to shut her eyes tight and it took a while before she fell asleep, and evil clouded her dreams.
