26th November
Mathew looked at Autumn. “Nice to see that you’re on time.”
“Got a new alarm.”
“Good Good. Come in.”
She slipped into the room he closed the door.
“I done is both a coffee please take a seat.”
She sat down as he walked across the room. He sat opposite her. “We have two observations coming up Autumn our first is in a few weeks the next and last for this year is before you break up for summer term. Are you okay with that?”
“Yeah.”
“Good.’ He breathed heavily. “So how was your weekend?”
“Good. I had an assignment to finish off with Stenton.”
“Jonah Stenton?”
“Yeah we were paired in science.”
“I see.”
She looked at him nervously. “I met Con afterwards and we hung in the park and watched dvds.”
He smiled. “So how are you finding this year Autumn?”
“No harder than any other.”
“Until the next right?”
“I guess.”
“I’d like to talk about your last few months at your previous school if that’s okay with you.”
She swallowed.
“So talk me through what happened to your friends. The ones that we haven’t talked about yet.”
“After Charlotte was found everyone turned against me. I felt so alone.”
“Why did they turn against you?”
“They felt that I was to blame after all they were all my friends and they were dead and I wasn’t.”
“Just because you were stronger than them doesn’t mean to say that you’re to blame.”
“I guess.”
He placed his hand on hers. “You weren’t, Autumn. So don’t get thinking that you were.”
“So why did it feel like I was?”
“They had to blame someone Autumn and you were the closest to those who chose to take there own lives. They couldn’t handle what was happening around them.”
“Neither could I.”
“But you pulled through it.”
“I wish that I hadn’t.”
“Don’t think like that Autumn.”
“Why not they did.”
The bell rang.
“You’re stronger than that Autumn.”
“I wish I was.”
“You are. Keep your head held high, you can face this. I’ll help you.”
“You promise.”
“I promise.” His lips touched her cheek kissing it. “I’ll see you Thursday okay.”
“Okay.”
His hands dropped off hers. ’You best be getting to your next lesson.”
“Thanks.”
“No need to thank me, that’s what I’m here for.”
She pulled herself up. “Bye Matt.”
“Autumn.”
She walked out of the room closing the door behind her Daniel looked up at her and smiled. She returned his smile awkwardly, walking down the corridor.
Break passed no one had seen her not even Connor she’d missed English and that wasn’t like her.
Everyone met at lunch she sat down next to Connor. ’“So where you been you weren’t in lesson.”
“Detention.”
“How come?”
“Dormston we’re to pleased I was late for lesson after I’d missed english to. I just needed time out Con I tried to tell him I was talking to Matt he caught up with me after second lesson we talked a little more and I was running late the English tutor weren’t to pleased either but they weren’t listening and I had to get my work off her and do it during break. I have it tomorrow too He said he’d be talking to Matt about his time keeping and his non obligation hours.”
“Oh.”
They all went outside for a cigarette there was a chill in the air, the bell rang and they all said there goodbyes heading for registration.
Daniel and Autumn walked into their last lesson. They sat down on their seats near the back of the room.
“Well I must say I’m pleased with all of your work and the effort that you’ve all put in.”
Dan smiled at Autumn.
“We‘ll be beginning the next price of course work this is to be completed over your next holiday and to be returned by The first Tuesday back so let’s get on with the lesson.”
The bell rang for the end of the day they pulled themselves up walking out of the lesson.
“I thought we were going to get it back for sure.”
“Me too.”
“I hope we can do this next one without any compilations.”
“Me too.”
“Hey guys.” Con said, slipping his arm around Autumn kissing her cheek.
“Con.”
“So how’s it go? Did she throw it back at you?”
“No.”
“That’s a first.”
“I have Red to thank for that.”
“I have a biggy.”
“Our next one is to do over the Christmas hols.”
“Cool ours starts now till the end of term.”
They all walked out of school meeting up with their friends walking home saying their goodbyes.
Connor looked at Autumn. “So have we got this weekend to ourselves.”
“At the minute. Yeah we have no science homework I’ll let you know Friday.”
He smiled moving forward. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
He kissed her softly. “Night babe.”
“Night Con.”
He walked away as she lit a cigarette.
He kissed her cheek. “Good evening babe.”
“Gaz.”
“You okay?”
“We need to talk.”
“Okay, let’s sit down.”
“Okay.”
They walked across the bridge sitting in the grass. “So what’s wrong Autumn?”
“I don’t think we should see each other again.”
“Why?”
“Mom’s asking questions I can’t keep lying to her.”
“Well tell her the truth, Autumn.”
“I can’t.”
“You can, or are you embarrassed by me?”
“No it’s just.”
“You think she’s going to flip about the age gap.”
“Just a little.”
“It’ll be cool babe, she’s already met me she’ll be fine.”
“I hope so.”
“She will.” He leaned forward. “I really like you babe I’d like to get to know you better shell be fine about us I promise.” He moved forward, pressing his lips on hers kissing her passionately.
27th November
Conner and Daniel met Autumn on the bridge walking to school where they met their
friends.
“Wow you’re all early again. Your eager this morning.” James says, flicking his eyebrows.
“f**k off Jae.”
“So we ready to go in?”
“We’ve got time for a fag”
“Its almost nine Con.”
“So. Live a little.”
His friends smirked as they passed the cigarettes round at least he hadn’t lost all of his and boy passionately around her. They were begging to think he had. The lit their cigarettes smoking.
The bell rang as they continued smoking making sure that they didn’t waste one drag before doubting them out.
They all walked into school his arm stain lifelessly across her shoulders.
“You’re all late.”
They looked up to see sour face this was going to be fun.
“By what? a minute?”
“Have you been smoking Mr. Harborne?” She asks as she can smell the stale smell of cigarettes and smoke on his school uniform.
“So what if have?”
“You know the rules Mr. Harborne it is against sxholl rules to smoke on school grounds.”
“Well tell that to everyone else and for your information we weren’t.”
“I don’t like your tone Mr. Harborne.”
“I don’t care much for yours either.”
“You’re one x away from being expelled may I remind you.”
“Like I care.”
All his friends stood watching. Autumn’s head was facing the floor his firends were trying not to go into a fit of hysterics.
“Luckily for you Mr. Grayson is pleased with your attendance and your ability to Compelle yourself since You talk and the beginning of term.” She turned her gaze to Autumn. “And you Miss. Cleveland, I am very disappointed I had high hopes for you when you began at the beginning of term with such high grades. I am beginning to think otherswise. And I was right at the beginning of that term when I said Mr Harborne and Mr Harrison would bring you down to their level, because it has already started.”
“It wasn’t her fault why you throwing it at her? I chose to have a fag.”
“And she chose to stay while you did instead of walking away. Your all in detention. You may go.”
They huffed walking away.
“I sorry babe.”
“Why? I should’ve walked away and I chose to stay.”
“Come on we’re already late.”
