Chapter 3

752 Words
"It's you, Jack Steele. Why are you still alive? You jinx?!" Nancy Foster pointed at Jack, her hand trembling with rage. "Mom, Jack isn't dead! Ben mistook someone else for him!" Emily quickly explained. Ben Reed was her classmate who had returned from the border a month ago, expressing his feelings for Emily. But she had been waiting for Jack, with no desire for another man. Jealous, Ben spread rumors that Jack had died in the great battle. When the news reached Emily's parents, they were delighted, thinking they could finally sever ties with Jack, the "bringer of disaster".. They happily arranged a new marriage prospect for Emily, but Jack returned! "General Steele was a hero who sacrificed himself for the Federation. Why are you, a troublemaker, still alive? Why don't you just die!" Nancy, hands on her hips, berated Jack. "Do you know how much we've suffered because of you? Do you want to ruin our family? Get out, as far as you can!" Nancy grabbed a broom, ready to hit Jack. "Mom, no!" Emily hurried to stop her. "Get out! If you hadn't insisted on being with him, we wouldn't be in this mess. If you keep protecting him, I'll beat you too!" Nancy's face twisted in anger. "Nancy, what's all the noise about? Mr. Yates is waiting," Frank Foster, Emily's father, walked out, his cheerful expression turning stern upon seeing Jack. Jack smiled wryly. He stood straight and said seriously, "Mr. and Mrs. Foster, I know you've suffered because of me. I'm back to make it right for Emily and the Foster family. I'll restore the Foster family's former glory and even make it the world's top family." This wasn't a joke; Jack now had the capability. A disdainful laugh came from inside. "Who's that outside? So noisy and annoying! Restoring the Foster family's glory? Making it the world's top family? Does the Steele family agree?" A young man with gold-rimmed glasses stepped out, sneering at Jack. "You must be the jerk Emily waited eight years for?" "Who are you?" Jack asked, narrowing his eyes. "This is George Yates, the eldest son of the Yates family in Wyndcrest. We found him as a match for Emily," Nancy quickly introduced, her tone full of admiration, a stark contrast to her attitude towards Jack. "Mom, respect my choice! I've said I'll only marry Jack!" Emily stomped her foot angrily. Hearing Emily's devotion to Jack, George said, "Mr. and Mrs. Foster, can I speak to this scumbag, or Mr. Steele, alone?" "No!" Emily immediately refused. But Jack spoke up, "Of course. Emily, go inside with your parents. I'll talk with him." "Jack..." Emily looked at him worriedly. But Jack smiled reassuringly, indicating she shouldn't worry. Nancy pulled Emily inside. Once the door closed, George's gentleman facade vanished. "If I were you, I'd never have returned to Wyndcrest. You left in disgrace, what courage brought you back? Don't you know the Steele family is now one of Wyndcrest's top families? Do you think they'll let you off?" "Whether they let me off doesn't matter. What matters is that I won't let them off," Jack said calmly. George laughed mockingly, "You spent eight years at the border, and all you learned was how to brag? Just because your name is Jack Steele, you think you're the legendary General Steele? If he weren't already dead, I might have believed you!" Jack found this amusing. "What if I told you General Steele isn't dead? And I am General Steele?" "How dare you!" George shouted, furious. "General Steele is the pride of the Federation. He sacrificed himself to protect the Federation and its people. By claiming his identity, you're tarnishing his honor. I could have you thrown in jail right now!" Jack didn't respond, just chuckled. George saw Jack's eyes, which were calm yet instilled a deep, inexplicable fear within him. What kind of gaze was this? "Let me give you some advice. Stay away from Emily. You're not worthy of her. If not, you'll suffer the consequences." With that, Jack's intense aura disappeared, and he turned to walk towards the villa. George exhaled heavily, feeling his entire body drenched in sweat. Glaring at Jack's back, George gritted his teeth. "Do you think I'm afraid of you? Tomorrow night is my father's birthday banquet. I've invited Emily's family, and I'll propose to her then!" Jack stopped in his tracks, not even turning around as he said, "Feel free to try. Let's see if I will kill you!"
