Chapter 37

1856 Words
Edited. Mercury’s P.O.V I was right not to trust this guy and quickly followed my gut instincts, ducking and diving as the guy, Henry, started shooting at me. I jumped up, fed up with this guy and started shifting into my lycan, Shadow, who was equally as pissed off with him and wanted nothing more than to rip him apart. Shadow snarled loudly at Henry, then lunged at him and began ripping him to shreds, making Henry scream out until there was nothing but silence. I shifted back into my human form and grabbed a pair of jeans and a shirt out of the chest of drawers. The jeans fit alright, but the shirt was a bit tight over my arms, still it would have to do until I got back home. I looked around the room, seeing the blood, flesh and body parts that once belonged to Henry and shrugged. Stupid bastard should have paid up like he was meant to in the first place instead of being greedy. I looked all around the apartment until I found a hidden compartment behind the chest of drawers. I opened it and found my money, plus even more that Henry had probably stolen or squandered. Oh well, it’s mine now. I grabbed a bag and stuffed all the money inside, but I had no clue that there was someone else in the room until a woman came out from under the bed, where she had been hiding. She looked right at me before running at me with her hand raised and it wasn’t until then that I saw the knife in her hand. I quickly grabbed the gun off the top of the chest of drawers and aimed it at her, hoping that as soon as she saw it she would stop, but she didn’t, so I pulled the trigger and shot her right between the eyes. The knife fell out of her hand as she fell to the ground, dead. I put the safety on the gun, grabbed the bag and put it in, then walked out of the apartment. “Come on, let’s get going.” I said as we got into the car and headed home. The car ride home was quiet, but that was nothing new and just as we pulled into the driveway I looked up at the house and saw that the lights were on. s**t, I forgot about her. I sighed and shook my head as we all got out of the car and went straight to my office where I split the money between Spike and Hawk before putting the rest in the safe. I knew that I needed a shower because when I shot that woman her blood splattered over me and I definitely needed to change these clothes, but I knew that I also needed to face Rylee. I walked upstairs and unlocked my bedroom door, knowing that as soon as I walked through it I was going to be hit by something, so this time I was going to play it smart. I opened the door and stood back, but nothing came, so I walked into the room and I was right because just as I did I was hit in the head by a flying shoe. So much for playing it smart, I thought as I quickly ducked to avoid the other shoe hitting me. “YOU…YOU BASTARD!!! HOW DARE YOU DO THIS TO M…..” Rylee screamed at me, but as soon as she saw the blood on me she stopped and sighed. “I’m sorry, come on, I’ll help you wash up.” She said, taking me by surprise. I honestly didn’t expect her to react that way, but I was glad she had stopped screaming at me. She went into the bathroom and began running the bath, then came back into the bedroom and helped me strip out of the clothes I was wearing. I got into the tub and she sat down on the chair beside me. “Care to talk about it?” She asked, but I shook my head. “No, I don’t like talking about the jobs I do.” I whispered and she only nodded. Thankfully she dropped the subject, but then she started to softly sing. It was a song I’d heard many times before, so I just lay in the tub listening to her. Somehow it relaxed me so much that the next thing I knew she was waking me up. “Come on, you’re going to freeze to death in this cold water.” She said, grabbing a towel and handing it to me. I went to stand up, but as I did Rylee quickly turned around and faced away from me. “Oh come on, you just helped me get undressed, you’ve already seen me naked.” I said, causing her to blush as she turned around to face me. I stood up and wrapped the towel around me, causing her to blush even more, but I couldn’t help notice the way that she looked down at my body and then hurried to look back up at my face. “You see something you like?” I asked, smiling smugly at her, but she just rolled her eyes at me. “Get dressed you goofball and I’ll give you a blanket and pillow for the couch.” Rylee replied, making me laugh. “Sweetheart, you’re in my room now and the only one that will be sleeping on the couch is you if you don’t want to sleep in the bed with me.” I said, making her roll her eyes again. “Fine, but stay on your side of the bed.” She replied, making me laugh again as I pulled on my boxers and got into bed. “Just get your ass in the damn bed. Don’t worry, I won’t touch you just yet and not without your consent.” I said, but she scowled at me. “You touch me and I’ll break your fingers, Mercury Black.” She said, making me laugh as she got into the bed. “I would like for you to try, little pup.” I said, pulling the blankets over me and falling to sleep. Rylee’s P.O.V I warily got into bed, still not trusting him completely just yet, but once I was settled in and heard him snoring I had no problem falling to sleep, but then I started to dream. I dreamt I was sitting on a bench in the park, watching as kids were playing, running after each other and just enjoying themselves. It was a lovely sight to see and made me feel relaxed, but then the Moon Goddess appeared to me, startling me slightly. “Why am I here?” I asked, knowing that something must be going on for her to appear to me in a dream. “Because someone wanted to see you, my child. I told him he has a few minutes.” The Moon Goddess replied, confusing me. Who would want to see me? I thought just as a bright light appeared and there he was. My first mate, Josh. I ran to him and wrapped my arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. “I miss you too, but I need you to listen to me because my time here is short. Kelsi is the one that killed me, she had rogues following us and attacking us, but they only got me. I know you have a second chance mate and that it’s none other than Mercury Black. I approve of the match, but don’t be so hard on him, he’s been through enough already and remember that you’re not the only one to lose their mate.” Josh said, making me sigh. “Josh, it’s just….hard. I have large shoes to fill because of his first mate and he does too because of you. I love you and I know that he still loves Cheyenne, but I don’t know what to do.” I replied, burying my head in his chest and breathing in his scent that I had missed so much. “Just be yourself, Rylee. Be the badass b***h I know you know how to be and you will learn to love him, just as he will learn to love you. Just give him a chance.” Josh replied and I looked up, but instead of seeing his smiling face I saw his sad one. “What’s wrong?” I asked and he shook his head. “It’s time, Rylee. I have to go now, just remember I’ll always love you. One day we’ll be together again, but not too soon. You have a life to live and I want you to live it.” Josh said, holding me tightly. He leaned in and kissed me softly, but before I knew what was happening he was gone. The Moon Goddesses P.O.V I had watched as Josh said his final goodbye to Rylee and then brought him back with me, leaving Rylee to enjoy the rest of her sleep. “Are you sure this was what you truly wanted?” I asked, looking at Josh. “Yes, if I didn’t see her one last time and let her go, she would have mourned herself to death. I want her to live her life to the fullest.” Josh replied, not taking his eyes off Rylee, who we could see through the mist of the clouds. I had been thinking about things ever since I had first spoken to Josh and I knew that he would be a perfect fit, but would he take it? “I know what you’re going to ask me and I’m grateful for the opportunity, but I can’t do it. If I become a Moon God then all I’m going to want to do is watch over Rylee and that’s not fair on me, her or any of the people I’m supposed to be looking after. I need to get peace, Moon Goddess, I need to let her go.” Josh said, answering my question before I had even asked it. “Very well, my child. I’m very proud of you, go and be at peace.” I said and with a wave of my hand he was gone. My children always amaze me at how caring they are, but also how ruthless they can be when protecting others. I looked back through the mist at Rylee’s sleeping form and a strange feeling came over me. I don’t know what it was or why I was having it, but something just didn’t feel right and I couldn’t put my finger on what it was. Not just yet anyway.
