CHAPTER SIXTEEN Stella climbed out of Maxwell’s car at the entrance to her apartment building. He’d insisted on dropping her at home. She knew he was worried about her. She was worried, too, but also felt uneasy about the memories that were surfacing of the last time she and Maxwell had been in a car together, outside her place. They’d both gotten out, because she’d had an injured hand. He’d helped her to the door and on the way, they had ended up kissing. It had been their first kiss. Also their last, as it turned out.
