(VIOLA’S POV)
The last time I saw Charles- Charlie as he corrected me, he left me standing in front of the principal’s office all alone. He had left me standing in the empty hallway watching after his retreating figure. I knew that he had bunked off school because I had gone on to peep through the huge glass windows and I had seen him going out of the school in his usual swagger. And now for me to see him coming back now during lunch time. I wonder where he went. Maybe he went for an early morning party or perhaps he went to bum off at my secret spot. Angrily, I gritted my teeth as I thought about the secret spot.
After he left me standing clueless like that, I had returned back to my class and I had lied to Jake and Pat that the principal was just checking in on me and the team of other tutors. And I was glad that the next classes that I had, I was all alone so they did not get to notice how confused and absent minded I was acting. Then it was time for lunch and that was when the biker decided to come prancing back in. I did not see him initially, Pat and I just noticed that many students seemed to be stopping and oohing. And then we heard some girl past by us talking about how hot the biker was and so I put two and two and I knew that he was most probably back and causing a stir. Then, I saw him and in that split second we both held our gazes. But as fast as he looked at me, his eyes were gone too. I was almost disappointed. I don’t know why but I wanted to hold on to that stare for a little while longer.
“What just happened?” Pat asked me pressuring on. I trust my best friend to notice the exchange of glance between Charlie and I.
“Where?” I asked her pulling her hand and her along as we walked towards our next class. But Pat was more interested in what she wanted to know from me.
“I am very sure about what I saw Viola. Stop playing with me and stop making me doubt myself.” Pat said and I could see that she was trying hard to think of what she had just seen.
“Come on Pat. I want us to get to the class early so that I can have my lunch.” I said still pulling her with me. I hoped that we could forget about whatever it was but then Pat proved me wrong by coming to a halt.
“Come on Viola don’t act like you don’t know that he just looked at you.” She said winking at me.
“Pat!” I said with a tired sigh and rolling my eyes too at the same time.
“Don’t tell me that you did not see him.” She said to me scolding me. “Or are you trying to pretend? Are you shy?”
I scoffed. “There is nothing to be shy about Pat. First of all he did not look at me. And secondly even if he did, I have a boyfriend.” I said to her with a beam. “Jake Trent, ever heard of him?”
Pat threw her hair back laughing but when she had her breath steadied, she said again more thoughtfully.
“But I can swear that I saw him look at you.”
I made sure that I avoided every time that Pat tried to ask me about the biker’s quick glance at me. I did not want to lie to her, I did not want to hide this from her either but it was important for me to understand what was going on before I broke the news to Pat. It was all still very hazy in my head and that way it was good for me to have myself settled before I spoke about it.
“Come on Pat, let’s go.” I said to her and I pulled her in the direction of the empty class that my next class was in.
We settled and soon I began to eat my lunch.
“Really though I saw his eyes and they were focused on you.” She said and I rolled my eyes again. If only Pat would just let go of this topic. But she went on and it led me in to thinking.
His eyes really were focused on me. Or was it insane of me to think that way as well. To be honest, I was looking at him also. So my eyes were focused on him too. There was something about the way he held my gaze. But I did not want to think too much about it. That was only an exchange which was meant to happen.
Of course we would look at each other. We knew something that no one else knew. We were student and Tutor. Or were we? It was obvious to me that he was not interested in us having lessons together. He probably hated me so much. Which was not surprising since our first encounter was bound to lead us here anyway.
“Viola?” Pat said.
“Hmm.” I responded snapping out of my thoughts and notice my best friend’s worried look at me. Then I notice that she is pointing at my legs which are crossed and blocking the pathway of one of our classmates, Celestine. Celestine was looking down at me with an apologetic smile as she hugged her books to her chest.
“Hy Viola.” She greeted with a smile.
“Oh Hy Celestine.” I said taking my legs off the path. “I am sorry about that.”
“It’s not a problem at all.” She said to me in a cheerful voice as she passed also waving to Pat.
Pat turned to look at me just after she had waved after Celestine.
“Is everything okay?” She asked me, her eyes searching my face. “You looked like you were deep in thoughts and your face was all in a knot.”
I laughed at Pat. “I’m okay Pat. I just got carried away.” I said to her now noticing the number of students in the class increasing.
I could not believe that this annoying biker was making me lose my train of thoughts. Since I had seen him at the park, I had not been able to think straight. And ever since then, it was something to something. What was going to happen when our classes were to begin? What was going to happen IF our classes were to begin?
