(VIOLA’S POV)
There was nothing harder than mornings in my life. But school was the only thing that could actually make me get up. I hate being late. And what was worse than being late on the first day of the session?. There was no way that you could ever be early after that. Anyway, I was able to make it in time for breakfast and the usual first day of school ritual with my younger brother. The debate on his outfit.
“You look fine in whatever you wear Dean.” I said truthfully hoping that this would assure him but he gave me a frown like he did not care.
“That is not a good reply Viola.” He said to me. I groaned, Dean did not look like he planned on leaving for school because of his indecision.
“The brown pants made you look taller.” I says to him through gritted teeth knowing that the earlier I help him out with this, then the better for me. Since I had to drop him off on my way. The bus didn’t come fit the middle graders on the first day of school. Long story short though was that it was hard to get these young ones to get ready on time on the first day.
Dean squinted at nothing in particular then he nodded at me as if he was trying to give me a chance.
“Now that’s a better reply.” He said disappearing back into one of the rooms quickly.
I groaned again and dad sniggered . I hoped that it worked this time around.
“I don’t want to be a sexist but I am the girl. I should be the one running and changing five million times. You know what right?” I said to Dad before lifting the glass of pineapple juice to my lips again.
“Yeah. You’re being sexist.” Dad said “but you do look gorgeous.”
“Thank you daddy.” I said to him smiling. He nodded at me in approval .
I knew he wasn’t just saying that to please me.
I was wearing a matching crotchet two piece of a crop top and a skirt with high top sandals and my hair was packed into a high top ponytail. I was wearing black eyeliner and my lips were glossed. I did look pretty, besides Dean was right.
the first day of school appearances mattered a lot.
My phone vibrated because of a text. It was from my best friend Patty. She wanted us to meet at the burger shop and head to school together from there.
“Is that Jake?” Dad’s voice chirped in to my thoughts and I raised my head at him. Then he added. “How’s he doing? Did he find California okay?”
“That wasn’t Jake, Daddy.” I said to him shaking my head. “It was Pat but Jake is doing fine and yes he found California to be very well.” I answered him directly with sarcasm clear in my voice.
“So is he coming over here?” Dad asked me as he narrowed his eyes. I wanted to roll mine. I knew that Dad was not too cool with Jake. At this point and because of how much time Jake and I have spent dating, Dad kind of keeps the relationship cordial.
“No he is not dad. I’m meeting with Pat at the burger shop. And then we are going to school together from there.” I said to him.
“You and Jake get into a fight or something?” Dad asked me his eyebrow shooting is.
“No Dad. We did not.” I said to him in a matter of fact tone. He had his hands drawn up by his side as if he was saying ‘no offense.’ Dad was not totally against Jake, if you asked me I would say Dad just did not trust Mr Trent, Jake’s father and so I would guess that would make it hard to trust his son too. But whenever I tried to bring this up by telling Dad that Jake was very different from his father , Dad always said that it was not the point.
“There is no fight dad.” I assured him shattering any hopes of him expecting that Jake and I were going to break up.
Dad nodded his head at me continuously.
“And how is Pat?” Dad asked me probably in a hurry to switch the topic to something that annoyed him even less.
“She is doing great Dad.” I answered him as I carefully placed my glass down on the table. Then. I stretched my head to the direction of the stairs.
“Dean. Are you ready or what?” I yelled at him.
“ I will be down in a minute!” He yelled back at me and I groaned angrily.
“ You better be or I’m leaving without you.” I told him angrily as I stood up and threw the handle of my bag over my shoulder. Then I turned to Dad. “Will you back home from work when we get back?”
“I have an extra shift today so I will be home late.” Dad told me. “You know where to get the money so just handle dinner okay?”
“Make sure you get something to eat also.” I told him sternly. “And please get a break when you need one okay?”
“Yes ma’am.” Dad said and with both laughed.
“Will do.” I said and then I went over and placed a loving kiss on his cheek. “Have a great day at work today daddy.”
“You too pumpkin.” Dad said to me and then he raised his eyebrow at me. “You are not leaving your brother are you?”
“Of course not Daddy. But he doesn’t know that.” I said and then I winked at him before shouting again. “Bye Dad. I love you.”
“I love you too baby.” Dad called after me loud enough as my own call and loud enough for Dean to hear us both and come running down the stairs.
“Fine! Fine! Whatever. Wait up.” Dean complained as he dashed to the dining table, stuffed some sandwiches in to his bag and then after giving Dad the jam of his fist, he was out the door and trying to catch up with me.
“Hy Tammy.” Dean and I called to Tammy who was watering her plants next door.
“Oh Hy lovelies! Have a nice day okay!” Tammy called back to us.
“We will. You too. Bye Nunu.” I added waving at the cat who was watching Dean and i from the front porch.
Starsvalley was a bustle this morning and that was not a surprise. After all this was the first day after summer, so everyone was back and it was a full town. I said goodbye to Dean at his school gate but he was quick to go in so that people didn’t see that he was being dropped off by his sister and then I hurried to the burger shop. I was just going I. When I got a call from Pat.
“Hello.” I said in to the receiver.
“Don’t go in. Come out and turn around.” She instructed.
I did as she said and I was soon face to face with my best friend. She threw her arms around me, gave me a quick hug and then a kiss on each side of my cheeks.
“Patty!” I said to her laughing.
“Oh My! You look so pretty.” She said looking over me. “Like really. You glow so much. Jake is about to have his mind in twists this morning. Gone with those California bitches!”
“Pat!” I warned her laughing as I looked around to be sure that no one around us heard her cursing. She handed me a brown paper bag.
“You were so late, I got a burger for you.” She said as we began to walk to school.
“Tell that to Dean.” I said rolling my eyes.
Pat laughed. “His usually first day outfit battle.” She said and i nodded.. It was not a far journey and walking to school made it seem nice especially since it was only our first day.
We were talking and laughing on the way until we got to school. It was very full of kids running around. Some cheerleaders screamed and ran fast in front of us. Pat and I stopped shocked.
“I did not miss all this craziness.” She said rolling he eyes and then we kept on walking till we walked past people and got in to the school.
“Is it just me or is school giving off some different vibes? More dramatic?” I said looking around as I waited for Pat to try to take her books out of her locker.
“Yes. I don’t know what is up with everyone today!” She exclaimed to no one in particular.
“It’s because of the new boy.” Sallie, one of our mates who was an emo said. She was leaning against lockers and reading a book with her face reading a blank expression.
“New boy?” Pat said.
“And Hy to you Sallie.” I said smiling.
Sallie sighed as if she was already tired of the conversation.
“The new biker who is coming here now. To starsvalley high for some exchange thing.” She said to us folding her books up. “And Hy to you too.”
With that she walked past us.
“Asin a new student? And a biker?” I said in confusion. “From the gang? Coming here?”
“Well isn’t that interesting?” Pat said smacking her tongue and pushing her blonde hair past her shoulder. “Now I know why those cheerleaders were screaming.”
I rolled my eyes. “You look like you want to get a jump on the new student as well.” I said noticing Pat’s eyes become dreamy.
“Well he is a biker.” She said.
“You haven’t seen him yet.” I said to her.
“Come on you know they are all hot.” She said to me winking.
“We don’t know anything about them. Also Your parents would kill you.” I said to her as we began walking to our first class.
“Come on. I am not crazy to have anything to do with the biker. I would just like to know if he is yummy. And if he is then how bad can a taste be?” She said to me.
Well ladies and gentleman, my best friend Patricia Marvin for you. She was not ashamed to show how much she was interested in the ‘guys topic’
I was just going to tell her something else when there was some kind of mumbling amongst the crowd of student and I noticed we were walking past then principal’s office which was why it was noisier. There seemed to be a number of kids around the door.
“What is going on here?” I said looking around.
“Beats me.” Pat answered and just as she did. The door opened and some girls squealed in delight as they scampered about pretending to be doing something order than waiting for the door to open.
“Oh.” I said realizing what could be keeping them here. And of course it was true. The door opened wider and who I assume is the biker stepped out of the office. It had to be him. From his leather jackets and dark pants and boots plus his hair. Then I froze, before I even got to see the face of the biker, a chill went down my spine and I had a good idea who it was. That was when our eyes met.
“The annoying stranger.” I whispered.
