CHAPTER 1

(VIOLA’S POV) “Come on Vi.” Dean said to me. “Come on.” He sounded like he was in a grudging mood and I wondered what he was the one complaining for. I was the one who was supposed to be tired and definitely not him. I groaned loudly as i readjusted my sitting position to a more comfortable one. He was not the one who was being forced to sit here instead of doing other things that I wanted. Yet he was the one who got to complain so much. Great! Dean my younger brother looked expectantly at me as I sighed in frustration. He needed my help with some school work he was supposed to turn in on Monday. It amused me how he had abandoned his holiday homework till the last weekend of summer. Even though he does love his books. Well the power of summer holiday was a great one and it had a very strong grip too. I could say the same for myself, I had not been able to tick everything in my summer’s to do list. Now looking at the book spread out in front of me, I wondered if I really did eight grade or if I did not. I might have skipped it without knowing or I might have slept all through because I was looking in a blank way at the figures that were starring right back at me. The maths problem looked more complicated and it was that way because Dean is a perfectionist and he would not let me tell him what to do if he did not think that it was right. So he made me more nervous and more unsure of myself. “I think you should try this.” I said after deliberating for a few moments on what I thought was to be done. But before I even crossed out the number Dean let out a shriek and groaning for the thousandth time, I dropped the pencil down and muttered under my breath. “For the love of God. “It is not that way Viola.” He said to me in his usual manner. And in the same tone that he had been using on me since he we started working in this homework together. I rolled my eyes throwing my hands up in frustration as I gave up. “Then why do you even need me here if you know what to do Dean? You have not even tried to listen to me.” I said watching him bend over his book. “And you will not let me help you and you are really making us spend more time here. So why do you need me Huh?” “Because dad won’t let me do this alone.” He said to me giving me his nose turned up. The little man had some attitude and I wanted to stick my tongue out but we were joined by the one and only reason why I was still here in the first place. “You need her support.” Dad said coming in to the den to see what the noise was all about even though I was sure that he knew. I had told him already that Dean was showing me that he could handle everything all by himself. “I don’t think he does Dad.” I said to him and we both looked at Dean. He was scribbling and punching the calculator. Dad and I turned to look at each other and I shrugged. We were used to how this little genius did his things. I guess Dad was just trying to follow a better procedure. Like my guidance which in this case is not needed. “Come on Dad.” I said to him pleadingly. “He is okay and you know it.” He knew I was tired of being here and I had somewhere that I really wanted to be. I had told him already that I wanted to go out and that was when he told me to help Dean with his assignment. “Dean is a genius.” I went on saying in a bid to convince him. “He probably knows more math than me.” “That is very correct.” Dean said raising his head for a brief moment. I rolled my eyes at him. I knew that Dad wanted me to be with Dean because he felt that it was the right thing to do. The almost sixteen years old daughter helped her thirteen years old brother with his assignment. Dad sighed. He knew too that Dean did not really need help with his assignments. He needed help with many other things but assignment was not one of them. “Come on Dad. It is the last day of Summer. I need this time.” I said to him batting my lashes in an attempt to look cute. “Where are you off to anyway? Jake is not back till 6 o’clock this evening . Isn’t that what you said?” He said to me squinting his eyes in question. I smiled when he mentioned Jake’s name. Jake is my boyfriend and he has been for a very long time. He has been the only boyfriend I have had. Since my middle school and he spent the summer in California with his aunt. I have missed him terribly but I also enjoyed my summer here. I could not wait to tell him all about it and I could not wait to hear what he had to say. And I wished that I could now fast forward the time. “Yes Dad.” I said ignoring Dean who was now making funny noises and saying ‘Jakey Jakey’ “So it is only 4 o’clock where are you off to in such a hurry?“ he asked me. “I just want some alone time.” I explained to him hoping that he did not go on with this topic. He could just give me the permission to go. “Oh.” Dad said nodding his head at me and then he turned to Dean and they both gave each other a knowing nod and a wink. I knew when they were talking about me. “What did I miss?” I asked them noticing the exchange. “We know that you are going to your secret place.” Dean said as he went back to focusing on the book in front of him. “What? I don’t have a secret place?” I lied in a stutter as I felt my cheeks go hot in embarrassment. “Yes you do.” Dad said laughing. “Ugh! Can I please leave now?” I said more embarrassed at this point. Dad shrugged and I know that meant yes so happily I stood up. “I will just go upstairs to freshen up.” I told them as I raced upstairs to my room. It was after I threw on my T-shirt and jeans that I realized that I had not taken any special time to throw in anything extra that will make me look pretty for Jake. Thinking of him made me smile and since he gave me that extra joy, I had my hair up in a ponytail the way he likes it and smothered my lips with lipgloss. Satisfied with the way I looked, I headed downstairs quickly. “I’ll be back home by 7. Jake and I are going to stop at Nana’s for a smoothie.” I said to Dad and gave him a kiss on his cheek. Then I ruffled Dean’s hair. “Be good you two.” I said to them. “We will try.” Dad called after me. “Stay safe!” I was out the door down the porch and on to the street. And then I was free from eight grade maths problem. Sighing as the fresh evening breeze of starsvalley hit my face. I slowed down and walked down the streets with my earpiece in my ears as I listened to music on a low tune. “Hey Tammy!” I waved to our next door neighbor who was reading a book on her front lawn. She looked up and then seeing me she lowered her book and gave me a bright smile. “Hey Viola!” She called to me giving me a nod. “How are you?” “I’m doing fine.” I said to her. I nodded at her car purring away at her feet. “How is Nunu doing now?” “Oh she is much better now. It was some worms but she is okay.” Tammy said as she stroked the cat that lay at her feet. I looked at Nunu briefly, “She does look better.” I said and then I waved at Tammy. “See you later Tammy!” “See you around sweet pie!”She said dropping her book so that she could wave at me properly. I walked on waving and smiling as I walked passed the townspeople. Then making sure that no one was paying attention to me, I took my left turn and then took another left turn that led to my secret hideout. Yes, Daddy and Dean were right. I have a secret place for myself. It was not really a secret since everyone knew about the place. They just did not know that I usually spend my quiet times there. No one knew about the connection I have with this place, not even Jake or my best friend Pat. It was my own special secret. It is a cut out restricted area which has a beautiful stream and a serene environment. Yes I know that I should not be here. In fact if Taylor, The town head finds out about this then I will definitely be in trouble. But it was impossible for him to find out. It was impossible for anyone at all to find out. No one ever comes to this part of StarsValley and when we were younger they used to tell us that wild animals stay here. Then I did not know that it was true because I was scared just like my peers then. But when I lost my mother at the age of 12, I found this place and it filled me up with some kind of warmth and peace. And since then I have been coming here for that peace. I slipped under the wired net carefully and then now on the other side, I skipped to my usual spot. But as I went around the hedges, I came to a stop and screamed just as someone too jumped back in a gasp.
