CHAPTER 2

2011 Words
(VIOLA’S POV) I was soon starring in to the pretty grey eyes of a complete stranger. He stood up and dusted his clothes and it was then that his figure loomed over me. He was tall and lanky with sandy blonde hair. He looked like he was around my age group and it was very easy to notice that this boy had attractive features. I might have remained drooling over him till I noticed that his expression was hardened. I snapped out of whatever thoughts I had going on in my mind and brought my self to the reality of the present which was very awkward. I had never seen this boy in my life. Never. So who was this good looking stranger and most importantly to me, what was he doing in my secret spot? I wondered if he had crossed over from somewhere. But it made no sense. All the years that I had been coming here, I had never seen anyone here till today. And the fact that it was even an unfamiliar face brought more questions to my mind. I eyed him carefully as he did the same to me. I could see that he had some comic books spread out on the floor (who else’s could they be?) And then it occurred to me that this stranger was using my secret spot. I was furious. I had never had to share this place with anyone before and yet I was doing so now. And with a total stranger. Where did he come from? The boy looked at me and then he went to sit down on the grass beside his books picking one of them up. I assumed he was about to start reading as he put the earpiece in his ears. “Who are you?” I said to him but he did not reply me. Angrily, I went around and to him. I knew that he could hear me and he was just ignoring me. “Excuse me.” I said and he finally raised his head up to me. “What?” He said to me. Finally a word! “Who are you?” I repeated trying my best to maintain my confidence. But to my surprise he gave me what looked like a smirk and went back to reading his comic book. “I’m talking to you.” I said to him. “Who are you? “What is your business?” He said to me now pausing with his book. Good, I now had his attention. “Because I have never seen you here.” I said “And so you are a stranger.” “So I guess you know everyone in your cute little town don’t you?” He said to me. I shrugged at him. “Well yes.” I said. It was true. I know everyone in Starsvalley. I was now worried that this was a bad idea. What was I doing confronting a stranger here? “Good. I am not part of your town.” He said to me. “So maybe you can mind your business now.” “I can not. You are in the town.” I said to him. “Well that is too bad.” He said nonchalantly and went back to flipping through his book. This angered me. Who was this person? And who did he think he was? “Look! I don’t know who you are but you should not be here. This place is restricted.” I said to him. “Really?” He said looking up at me again. “Yes.” I said. “So what are you doing here?” He asked me and then he nodded at the book that I was now clutching to my chest. “I see that you are here to read too.” “That is none of your concern.” I found myself saying. I was angry. I did not want to be doing this right now. I needed to have my quiet time and he was being annoying to me at this point. Whoever this boy was. “Look. I don’t know who you are but I would like you to leave me in peace.” He said to me. “You should not be here.” I said to him as my anger was still rising. “Why don’t you go and report them? Run along. Then we can talk about how you found me. And what you were coming to do here.” He said to me and I could see that he had another smirk on his face. “Also you should not be so confident. Aren’t you worried that you are here arguing with a complete stranger.” I looked at him angrily. But he was right. I had no idea who this guy is. And yet here I was arguing with him. Suddenly I had a nervous feeling, what if he pushed me in to the water behind me. I glanced at the water and then back at him. He in turn gave me a mocking smile. He must have read my mind. I hated that he had managed to shake me a bit because now I was no more comfortable. But I was not going to let him see it. “You know what? You can do whatever you want! I don’t care.” I said to him angrily. “Great! So let me be be!l Thank you.” He said smiling annoyingly and then he went back to reading his book. I groaned and stormed out of the area angrily! Who was he? What did he think he was doing! This was my spot. For years it has been and now out of the blue. This annoying guy comes and takes it away from me? I stormed away angrily murmuring to myself. Who is this stranger? Where did he come from? But most of all what I wondered was if I was going to ever see him again. I was still angry when I got to the bus stop and sat angrily at the bench. I was huffing and trying to calm myself down. But it was hard to do that. Somehow the scene with the stranger at the lakeside kept replaying in my head. I still could not believe that had just happened. I had planned on having a nice time the way I usually do. And now I was forced to sit here in the midst of the town while I waited for Jake to arrive on the six o’clock stop. Part of me blamed Dad and Dean for what had happened. If they had let me leave since, then I would not have to deal with this stranger hugging my spot. But no matter what I told myself, it brought my to one thing always. Who was the stranger? I could not seem to think about who could it be that would bring him here. Summer was over and so it was unlikely that someone was coming to come and visit their relatives at this time. And also here in Starsvalley we knew ourselves. As I said, we hardly ever had new faces. I was so caught up with thoughts of this stranger that I did not notice the bus pull up to the stop. It was only when I heard my name being called that I knew I had zoned out completely. “Viola!” That was unmistakably Jake’s voice. I looked up then and I saw him with the widest and brightest smile ever on his handsome face. At that moment, every thought about this stranger disappeared from my mind and I was filled with warmth. “Jake!” I said running to give him a hug. I jumped in to his arms just after he dropped his bag on the ground and he carried me and gave me a twirl. Then I took his face in my hands and gave him a deep kiss. He kissed me back passionately pulling my body close to his. I missed him. I missed the taste of his lips, I missed the way he smelled. It was good to have him back. “God! I missed you so much.” He said to me as if reading my voice. I smiled at him happily. “I missed you so much too.” I said truthfully and I really did. He got his bag and took my hand in his as we walked. “How was California?” I asked him. “It was great. You know sunny and nice.” He said to me. I felt a pang of jealousy. “It seems like you had a really good time.” I said to him. “Yes I did.” He said and then he noticed my face and gave a chuckle. Then he playfully tugged at my cheeks. “But that does not mean that I did not misss you.” He said to me. I stopped in front of him and crossed my arms across my chest. “Did you?” I asked him rising my eyebrow at him inquiringly. “You know I did.” He said pulling me close to him and gave me a kiss again. I kissed him back again. “ Oh wow! Now I know Jake is back. You are back to doing this PDA thing.” Jonah, the town’s electrician said as he passed us with giving Jake a tap on his shoulder as he passed us with some wires around his arm. Jake and I chuckled. “It is good to see you Jonah.” Jake called after him. “Good to have you back!” Jonah responded giving a wave as he left. “Now, what is the plan?” Jake asked me. “We are going to hang out.“ I said to him “so that we can catch up.” “Yeah what is new?” He asked me as he laughed. And that made me think of the stranger that I had just met an hour ago. It got me wondering about him all over again. “Viola?” Jake called and I snapped out of what I was thinking . “Yes?” I said “Is everything okay?” He asked me. “Yes everything is fine. Why?” I asked him laughing nervously. Jake smiled at me. “You look like you were thinking about something.” He said to me. “Oh. I just remembered something.” I said to him. “But it is not important.” I wondered if I should tell Jake about the strange boy. But telling him that would mean that I would expose my secret spot too and I did not want to do that. So I dismissed it. “Anyway, we are going to Nana’s so that we can share a large smoothie or milkshake.” I said to him. “I have missed Nana’s heavenly smoothies.” He said and then he tapped my nose playfully. “And I have especially missed sharing them with you.” “Me too.” I said smiling. And we both walked to Nana’s hand in hand with Jake’s duffel bag slung over his shoulder. Great! Jake was here and everything was back to normal. Summer was over and school would be in session soon. I would become a Junior now and Jake would be a senior. We would have the best time of the school year just like always. And nothing was going to change that. But somehow, the strange boy still managed to slip in to my mind. There was something about it all that made me unable to stop thinking. I could not understand if I was excited or anxious. Or maybe I was still angry that he had taken my spot and I was not able to do anything about it. Or maybe I just really wanted to know who he was.
