CHAPTER THIRTEEN Half an hour later, Stella and Maxwell were sitting opposite Daniel, in one of the New Haven interview rooms. They had allowed Daniel to change into dry clothes, but he was still shivering. Stella guessed it was more from fear than cold, but all the same, Maxwell had fetched him a blanket. He clutched it around him as he regarded them apprehensively. Maxwell had placed the plastic bag on the table next to Daniel’s phone. The plastic gleamed in the harsh overhead lights. “Where is your mother tonight?” was Stella’s first question. Daniel flinched at the word. “She’s at work. She’s operating on a patient.
