CHAPTER FOURTEEN At nine-thirty p.m., just as they were leaving Daniel’s house, Stella heard Maxwell’s phone start ringing. He glanced down at the car’s display and made a frustrated face. “It’s Roth,” he said. He glanced at Stella, and she knew he shared all the worries she’d been internalizing. “Better get this over with,” he decided, punching the answer button. A moment later, Roth’s voice filled the car. “Haven’t had an update from you or Fall today. What’s been happening?” “Groundwork today,” Maxwell said shortly. “We’re driving back to New Haven now.” “Groundwork?” Roth asked, sounding less than pleased. “Getting foundations in place. Fact finding. No real progress,” Maxwell admitted, and Stella knew as he spoke them how those words burned. She felt incredibly inadequate that
