1 YEAR LATER
CARLA
“Thoracic Surgery for May Chambers, beginning cardiac tamponed.”
“Scalpel.”
“Spreader”
“Scissors.”
“Suction.”
“It’s the right ventricle. I’ll close the primary. Prepare for five proline suture. Inject blood, tap irrigation, suction!”
The anxious looking surgeon yelled in command, while nurses and younger doctors scampered about the theatre.
“Her blood pressure is dropping!” a noise with a faltering voice informed the doctors.
I sucked in a deep breath and concentrated on my own job which was to make sure the patient stayed under as long as the surgery lasted with general anesthetic.
Although I was still a student, I had learned and mastered a lot within a short time for the head of anesthetic technician department to trust me enough to let me be in charge.
My job was extremely important because, werewolves don’t go under easily due to our stronger consciousness and more heightened sense, so we in charge of making them go under so as not to feel the pain of surgery, had to work ten times harder than humans doing the same job.
Thankfully, the blood pressure of the patient became steady and the surgeon went out of the room, leaving the closing and stitching up for the younger doctors. The younger doctors finished and left the cleaning up for the nurses.
But I knew as usual, they would make me do it, since I was the only rankless wolf among them. At first, many of them refused to even work beside me, but my skill was something that could not be ignored, so they had no choice but to deal with me being in the theater with them.
“Clean everything up, lowlife!” they spat at me before moving the patient to the intensive care unit, leaving me alone to take care of the sterilizing the surgical instruments, wiping the blood and washing everything that needs to be washed and then airing the surgery room.
None of that was my job, but I couldn’t complain to anyone because I feel like I have been given more than I deserve. I never actually believed I would ever be able to take the tests and study this course but someone whom I didn’t know provided the books back to me, and that was the biggest motivation I needed.
I worked millionth times harder than a regular wolf, studied like it was my last life line, like I was going to die if I failed, because well, it really felt that way to me. I had to juggle between the demanding course and my never ending chores at the pack house all the while trying to hide from my mate.
“Hey, Carla!” a familiar voice called out from the entrance, and I instantly knew who it was.
Alec.
“When I heard there was a surgery, I knew you would be here cleaning as usual. I don’t know why you won’t let me talk to those nasty females that do this. I mean, it’s not even your job! This hospital pay cleaners to do what you’re doing right now, Carl.” he ranted in his usual manner before coming to join me.
I laughed and thanked him for his thoughtfulness as usual and he smirked and dragged the mob from me, nodding towards the instrument. “Let’s spilt up so the work would be faster.” he snapped playfully.
I appreciate his kind gesture, but I would never feel comfortable having the beta of my pack clean beside me. “Seriously, Alec, I’ll be fine, please. What would I say when someone comes in here and see you cleaning?” I asked, trying to collect the stick from his firm grip.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk, Carla, you know it’s useless trying to argue with me right? So why not go and play your part and let’s leave here before ANYBODY comes in to see us?” he asked rhetorically with a laugh and then continued mobbing the floor.
Alec and I became friend last year after all my futile attempts to avoid him. At first he said he was keeping an eye out for me on behalf of his Luna queen, but we became closer as time went on. He was currently doing his residency to become a gynecologist, so we both weren’t really far from each other, especially when I started my practical studies here in the hospital.
Alec became someone I could rely on and was extremely sweet to me, often telling me that he wouldn’t mind not ever finding his mate as long as I stayed by his side. Although I always laughed at his words. I don’t ever see him as a love interest and I never would.
He always tried to use his authority as beta to stop people from bullying me but I had to make him stop, reassuring him that I could handle myself.
I have learnt that showing no emotions of pain or agony when someone tries to hurt you verbally or physically makes them miserable and quickly get tired of bullying you, but some never get tired though. People couldn’t understand our relationship but I know he was my friend, a friend the goddess sent to me after I got here.
We finished cleaning and started heading back to the pack house. The back pack he bought for me was slung over my shoulders containing some text books. I was putting on the white converse Emma sent over as my birthday present, and a black dungarees short gown with white t-shirt worn inside.
I knew I had a good fashion sense, just that I didn’t have enough clothes to express myself.
“Are you excited for the Alpha’s one year anniversary?” Alec asked my wandering mind.
“Whoever gets excited for chores? I have to wash more dishes, and stay in the kitchen all day long. So no, I’m not excited one bit.” I whined as we got closer to the pack house.
We walked because I have always refused to drive in his Ferrari. The head maid would roast me alive if she ever sees me in it.
“Should I come and help?” he suggested tentatively, knowing I would definitely turn him down.
“Today is your day as well, Alec. The elders making your brother a permanent Alpha means you would be the permanent beta here as well.”
“Doesn’t mean I won’t come and check up on you, either way.” Alec muttered and then went the other way while I went to the maid’s quarters and him to the Alpha quarters.
Today, the elders of the green forest pack would be celebrating Mint for his good works since he came to the pack a year ago, and make him the permanent Alpha of the pack. The celebration would be in full swing soon, and everyone would be coming, including Emma and her baby girl, Alpha Zyk and every other Alphas in the realm.
I was so happy I would be meeting my best friend and her adorable baby after forever, but what bothered me most was the gossip that went around the maid’s quarters this few days about the elders planning to give the Alpha a chosen mate once he was made the permanent Alpha.
I knew it would hurt like hell, but I had to hang in here and complete my course before leaving. I had been going through hell here already, one more year won’t kill.
I went into our room to changer into the maid's clothes, applying healing hand cream Alec got for me before heading to the kitchen for my day task.

ALEC
I stopped walking and watched Carla go through the back door to the maid’s quarters, feeling bad that I couldn’t really do much to make her life easier.
At first I kept an eye on her based on my brother’s instruction, but now, I couldn’t help taking care of here for my own sake. I have always wondered why my brother would want me to look out for a rankless she-wolf, and why his eyes looked so sad when he gave me the instructions which he called a secret that must be between myself and him.
Maybe it was because of the Alpha’s King’s Luna right? Or….
Did he love her? Of course not, I have never seen the both of them again after the last time I saw her quivering in his room. And I hope that wasn’t the case though, because I was falling deeply for Carla.
For her golden green eyes, her rich chestnut brown hair that was only let free when she was doing mountains of dishes, her beautifully bruised palms from months of scrubbing dirty plates, and how she smiles at everything even though deep down, she was lonely and helpless and sometimes…lost.
However, I haven’t been able to muster up the courage to tell her, because I fear it could ruin our priceless friendship. But I had to, I don’t mind missing out on my mate which I might not meet anymore since I’m twenty now.
I would confess my feelings to Carla tonight, and ask her to my girlfriend. At least we can start from there. Hopefully, she says yes.
I sighed and went into my room to get ready for the big night.
