CARLA Registration, done! I sighed with relief walking back to the maid's quarters with all the printed papers and text book I’ll be needing for the exams tucked under my arm. The whole process wasn’t as easy as I thought and I was glad I went to administrative office when I did, if not, it would have been an issue for another day. I don’t have much time as I have to start reading now, I supposed as I hurried back to the maid’s quarters. Let’s forget about this morning, Carla! I told myself, Emma must be waiting for my call. “Hey, you!” I heard a shout from behind me that made me stop in my tracks. I turned to see the scowling face of the head maid approaching me, in a menacing and intimidating manner, I couldn’t help but withdraw some steps back, wondering what I have done this time around. “Ye..yes, ma,” I stuttered, bowing my head as a sign of respect. “I have no idea how you managed to annoy the Alpha so soon. I mean, you barely stayed up to 24 freaking hours here!” she yelled, spitting saliva into my face. All the maids stopped and stared at me before resuming their duties. “I’m I even surprised?” she threw her hands in the air, asking no one in particular, “No, I’m not, you rankless wolves are as useless as your wolves. I wonder why you even bother to exist in the first place.” she lashed out, yanking my hair as though she was holding a grudge against me. All the white papers and the GED revision text book I just got sprawled unto the wet grass, soaking in the water and melting into the grass. I watched in horror as the only thing that gave me hope here turned into ruins before my eyes. “Ahh!” I cried out in agony with the pain searing through me, my skull throbbed as though someone was setting my whole head on fire. I tried to grab her hand put she punched my hands away, tightening her grip on her fistful of my hair. Hot tears burned my eyes as she dragged me along, my pupils sting of unshed tears but it wasn’t long before they came flowing down, wetting my cheeks. She stopped walking and pushed my head backwards, causing me to wince in both pain and relief. I wiped my eyes feverishly and I looked up to see that I was standing in a large kitchen which was bustling with activities. People in white gowns with white chef caps walked about, checking stoves, frying things, steaming, blending and all sort of activities carried out in the kitchen. “I told you no one would do your job for you, right? Since the Alpha doesn’t want you in his apartment anymore, so you’ll rot here doing the dishes of the whole pack house and the laundries. And you can’t go for your classes or lessons if all the utensils in this kitchen are not squeaky clean. You wouldn’t like to know what I’ll do to you if you dare violate my orders, now go to work!” she commanded and stormed off with a loud hiss. She didn’t even talk about my papers that were ruined because of her, hell I knew she didn’t give the tiniest bit of fvck. I ambled into the kitchen, sobbing quietly, unable to hold back anymore. A large lump formed in my throat, my stomach churned as I cried for my future, cried for coming here in the first place. If he hadn’t come here as the Alpha, I wouldn’t be getting so tortured, I thought as wrenching sobs escaped my throat. I was at the back of the kitchen where the dirty dishes were thrown to, and as the only one here, I had the place all to myself to cry my eyes out. A strong revolting stench hit me as I walked closer to the large sink, causing me to cough at the smell. My intestines rolled over and the urge to throw up consumed me. I closed my nose with my fingers, staring at the mountain of dishes I would be doing alone. Four maids were usually in charge of the dishes and they took shifts, but now, I would be doing it all alone for as long as I lived in this pack. I sucked in a deep breath and quickly turned on the water, pour in some blue-ish liquid soap from a bland container close to the sink and started washing the dishes, holding my breath but occasionally breathing out so I wouldn’t suffocate to death. I knew I was mistreated back at our pack before Emma came, but it wasn’t this bad. By the time I finished, it was really late, and all the kitchen staff were gone. My hands were completely scalded and bruised by the occasional chef knives I encountered while washing. I had no idea they were there when dipping my hands in, and the torture from the soap made it worse. But I ignored the pain, rushing down to where my textbooks fell to see if I could salvage anything from them. I wasn’t sure the people at the pack’s administrative office would lend me their ears or even bother to give me new ones again. I got to the spot and fresh tears gathered in my eyes afresh, my books have been shredded into pieces by someone who wanted to make sure I couldn’t make use of them anymore. I bent down on the wet grass, ignoring the cold water that seeped into my worn out sandals, picking up the pieces of my text book as a strangled sob escaped my throat. They were gone, and I was meant to start reading today to meet up with the things I need to learn for the upcoming tests. I squatted there and continued to cry silently, listening to frogs crook in unison and the trees sway to the wind. I was really alone in the dark and cold place, I thought as tears continued to flow down none stop. My phone suddenly started to vibrate in my pocket, I wanted to pick up but decided not to, I would not tell Emma, I won’t be a crybaby. Adversity builds Character, they say. I’ll live through this, I resolved to myself. The night wind got stronger and stronger till tiny droplets of water started dropping on my face, merging with my ears. I shivered from the rain, but didn't bother getting up. Squatting down in the open grassy field surrounded by building as the sky emptied itself on me.
