Mercury’s P.O.V
I was so thankful that Abigail did not wake up more than twice in the night and I was sleeping so f*****g good, until my phone started to annoyingly ring on the nightstand. I lifted my head up slightly and looked at my phone with one eye open, but when I saw that it was an unknown number I decided to ignore it. Thankfully the ringing soon stopped, but it immediately started back up again, pissing me off.
“What the hell, man.” I growled and picked up my phone.
“Hello, this is Alpha Don Mercury, how can I help you?” I asked, trying to wake myself up a bit more.
“Hello….hello, Alpha Don Mercury. You don't know me, but my name is Alpha Dash and I desperately need your help. My daughter went missing almost a day ago and her mate, AJ, is going nuts because she's pregnant. I was wondering if you could help me.” The man said and I was stunned for a second. I was glad that I had decided to answer it after all.
“I will try, but could you tell me what your daughter's name is, please.” I asked, wondering if it was the same woman we found outside, but there is no way it could be a coincidence, is there?
“Her name is Nelsa, my daughter's name is Nelsa. Have you seen her? Do you know where she is?” Alpha Dash asked and I shook my head as I hated to have to break his heart like this, especially over the phone.
“Sir, I am so sorry to have to tell you this, but we found your daughter….” I started to say, but was suddenly cut off by him cheering.
“Thank you, oh thank the Moon Goddess she has been found. Is she alright? Is the baby alright? I can’t tell you how….” He started to say, but I had to put him straight before his hopes got any higher.
“Sir, sir, I’m afraid that it is not good news, please let me finish. We found your daughter, but she was already dying when we did. She had been shot in her side by humans who thought she was a real leopard, my mate Cheyenne found her and she was in labor. Her baby was successfully delivered and she named her Abigail. She told my mate to look after her until her pack or mate found her, but I am afraid that the damage done by the bullet was causing her to lose too much blood and she died shortly after. I am sorry to have to tell you this over the phone, but I didn't want you to get your hopes up only to find out the truth later.” I said, explaining everything to him and then listened to the sad exhale of breath down the phone as the man called Dash started crying.
“What…..what did….you do with….my daughter’s…..b….body?” Alpha Dash asked, crying and trying to catch his breath.
“We treated her just as if she was a member of my own pack, we built a pyre and laid her on it, sending her ashes up to the Moon Goddess. We treated her with respect and dignity, I promise you.” I replied, hopefully giving him some semblance of closure. I know it's not much, but besides giving him his granddaughter back it is the best I could do, even though right now I would be ripping the whole pack house apart if it was Anna.
“Alpha Don Mercury, thank you. Thank you for treating my daughter with respect. With your permission we will be there in a few hours to pick up my granddaughter and bring her back home. I will also be bringing my daughter's mate and the baby’s….Abigail’s father.” Alpha Dash said, breaking my heart as I realised that he would have to have this conversation again and relive it all as he told Nelsa’s mate.
“Yes, you have my full permission to come onto my territory. I am sorry I couldn't give you better news. I will await your arrival, Alpha Dash. I am truly sorry for your loss.” I replied and we both hung up the phone. I rubbed my hands across my face, thinking of how I was going to tell Cheyenne that she was going to have to give up Abigail, but it was best that it happened now and not later when she had gotten even more attached to her. I got out of bed and got dressed straight away, leaving the bedroom. I didn't know where Cheyenne was, so I sniffed the air, picked up on her scent and followed it all the way to Anna’s room.
“Mom, are you wanting another baby? Is this what all of this is about? I mean you're giving me the baby talk.” Anna asked Cheyenne and even though I know I shouldn't have eavesdropped on their conversation I was curious to know the answer.
“Yeah, I want to try again, but I think your father already has his hands full with the both of us and now this newborn. I don't know how he would feel about it, so I….” Cheyenne replied, but stopped when she heard me. I couldn't help clearing my throat as I wasn't expecting the answer she gave, making both Cheyenne and Anna look at me stunned. Cheyenne wanted to try for another baby? I had been wanting to try for some time as well, but I didn't want to say anything and make her feel pressured. I would definitely be having a conversation with Cheyenne later about this, after baby Abigail has been picked up by her family.
“Cheyenne, I….I…” I started to say, trying to find my voice, but the way she was holding Abigail I knew that this would upset her.
“I got a phone call a few minutes ago from an Alpha Dash. he asked me if I could help him find his pregnant daughter and when I asked him her name he told me it was Nelsa. I gave him the bad news and he asked what I did with his daughter's body, so I explained what we did for her. He is on his way here with Nelsa’s mate and Abigail’s father, they should be here in a few hours to pick Abigail up.” I said and they both nodded, which wasn’t the reaction I was expecting to get, especially from Cheyenne. I knew she was heartbroken because I could feel it through the bond and even though she knew all along that she wouldn't be able to keep Abigail, it didn't make it any easier for her. I watched as she looked down at the baby in her arms and smiled.
“Come on, little one, let's get you washed. Your daddy and grandfather are coming to get you.” Cheyenne whispered to Abigail.she took the baby out of Anna’s room and went straight to our room. She bathed her and I brought in the little yellow outfit with hearts all over it that I had first brought Anna when she was a newborn, as well as the matching small bonnet to keep her head warm. I had brought her two of these dresses because she looked so cute in them. This one when she was first born and the second when she was three, but that one was pink and would have been too big for Abigail. I handed the outfit to Cheyenne as she laughed as she looked at it. Cheyenne dressed Abigail and then fed her before putting her down for a nap, while I went down to my office to let her spend some time alone with Abigail.
“Alpha, a car has pulled up and a werecat by the name of Alpha Dash has come to the border of the territory, he says he's here to pick up his granddaughter.” Noah said, mind-linking me and letting me know the second he had arrived.
“Yes, that's right, send him to the pack house, we’ll be waiting.” I replied, mind-linking him back.
“Yes Alpha, we’ll be there in a few minutes.” Noah replied and I ended the link. I got up from my chair and left my office to go find Cheyene, thinking that she would be in our bedroom, but when I walked past the living room I saw that she was actually in there with Abigail.
“Cheyenne, they are here, honey. Are you ready for this?” I asked, kneeling down in front of Cheyenne.
“No, but she's not mine to keep. I know this and I just want her to be happy, I want her life to be full of joy. I just wish she could have known her mother, but I know her grandfather and father will have all kinds of stories and photos for when she gets older. I made a promise to Nelsa and I am going to fulfil it.” Cheyenne replied, taking a deep breath. There was a knock on the front door and I smiled at Cheyenne, kissing her cheek as I got up to go and answer it. When I opened the door I saw two men standing there and even if I wasn’t expecting them I would still know who they are from the heartbroken looks on their faces it was obvious who they were.
“Alpha Dash, I am so sorry for your loss, for both your loss. If you follow me, I will take you to Abigail.” I said as they bowed their heads to me. We walked back into the living room and Cheyenne was already standing with Abigail in her arms.
“This is my mate and Luna Alpha, Cheyenne. Cheyenne, this is Alpha Dash, Nelsa’s father and AJ, Nelsa’s mate and Abigail’s father.” I said, introducing them.
“Hello, Luna Cheyenne. I would like to thank you for helping my daughter and taking care of my granddaughter. It makes me so happy to see you have taken great care of her.” Alpha Dash said, bowing to Cheyenne, while AJ just stood there speechless as he laid eyes on his daughter for the first time. Cheyenne walked over to him and placed Abigail in AJ’s arms, making sure he was holding her right before she stepped away.
“I am sorry there wasn't more we could do. I heard her call out to me and I really wish I had gotten there sooner, but when I did she was already in labor and had lost too much blood. She asked me to save her baby and I told her I would. She got to hold her and name her before she died. I’m so very sorry for your loss, but you must live for her, you have a daughter to take care of and to watch grow up to be a beautiful lady. I know it hurts, but Nelsa is always going to be with you, with you both.” Cheyenne said and AJ nodded, trying to muffle a small sob.
“I will do my best, Luna. I loved my mate. She only wanted to go out for a walk and told me that she would be back in a few minutes, but those few minutes turned into hours. I went to look for her, but I couldn't find her anywhere and then I felt a sharp shooting pain in my side, so I knew something had happened to her, but I just assumed she had gone into labor. I was frantic as I called all the hospitals, but no one had seen her and then I felt the bond between us break. I didn't know why it broke at first and now I know it's because she had died. Our pack will mourn for her and I’ll tell Abigail stories of her mother, I’ll also tell her about you. If she ever wants to meet you…” AJ said and Cheyenne held her hand up, stopping him from talking as he was getting choked up.
“If she ever wants to meet me then she will always be more than welcome here.” Cheyenne replied, smiling. We talked for a while longer and Cheyenne collected a few things like milk and diapers for them to take with them for the journey home. After a couple of hours Cheyenne and I walked them outside and said our goodbyes, as they were led back to their car.
