Chapter 8

Mercury’s P.O.V   I completely agreed with Anna and Cheyenne, they were right she deserved a proper funeral and there was no way I could leave her out here, that would be disrespectful and that was the one thing I wasn’t. I picked Nelsa’s lifeless body up in my arms and we all walked back towards the pack house.   “I need a pyre building right now.” I said, mind-linking the guards. They didn't ask any questions, so I ended the mind-link and carried on walking. Werecats were quickly becoming extinct because of the stupid humans and wanting to catch a prize, when in actual fact they were killing someones child, someones parent, someones mate. It made me savage to think of this and all I wanted was to rip the heads off the ones that had done this, but there was no way of knowing who it was and as much as I wanted to I couldn't just kill a human because it was against our laws. We slowly walked through the woods and by the time we got back to the pack house the pyre was built. I walked over and gently laid her body down on the top of the pyre, then stepped back as one of the guards handed me a torch and a lighter. I lit the torch and then turned to face my family. I know she wasn't a member of my pack, but she would be treated like one and her funeral would be like that of one.   “Today we send Nelsa up to the Moon Goddess, where we all know she will be taken care of and well loved. Let her ashes soar up to the sky and join the rest of our fallen pack members.” I said, turning back and putting the torch to the pyre, setting it on fire. I stepped back and took my place next to Cheyenne, who was still holding Nelsa’s newborn baby in her arms. I nodded to Cheyenne as she looked at me and she handed the baby to one of the guards before we both shifted into our wolves and howled into the sky, mourning the loss of one of our pack members.   Cheyenne’s P.O.V   I felt so sad that Nelsa had lost her life and wouldn't get to know her daughter, so I let out my sadness by howling into the sky. When we were done I shifted back and was quickly handed a dress to put on by Goldie. She wasn't out there with us, but I had mind-linked her on the way back and let her know what had happened. Goldie was just as sad as I was, especially because we were both mothers and even more so that Goldie was now pregnant again. I took baby Abigail back into my arms and Goldie followed me as we went inside the pack house and up to my room. I cleaned Abigail up, making sure nothing was on her while Goldie grabbed a pack of newborn diapers that she had brought when she found out she was pregnant. Goldie put the diaper on her, while I went and grabbed one of Anna’s old baby grows and put that on her to keep her warm.   “Well, we can't give her normal milk, so how about we ask one of the new mothers if they have any to spare.” Goldie said and I immediately nodded, beginning the mind-link.   “Charlotte, do you have any spare baby milk please? I have a newborn baby here whose mother just died and I have nothing to feed her with.” I asked, mind-linking her.   “Yes, of course. Give me a few and I’ll get my mate to bring it over.” Charlotte quickly replied and I ended the link.   “We have milk on the way.” I said as Goldie cooed over the baby, rocking her back and forth. Thirty minutes went by and her mate, Tobias, showed up with two bottles of it. I thanked him and then fed Abigail before burping her and then watched as she fell asleep in my arms. I was carefully putting Abigail into the small crib that William had brought in and set up just as Mercury walked into the room.   “Cheyenne, you know we can't keep her, right? Her pack or her father will probably come looking for her and if they do you will have to give her up.” Mercury said and I just looked at him and smiled.   “Mercury, I already know this, but until that time comes I am going to take care of her. I made a promise to her mother and I intend to keep it. I can't just let this baby die, she hasn't even seen the world yet, let her live. Let her live here, at least until her family comes for her.” I replied and Mercury looked at me like I was nuts.   “Cheyenne, I’m not going to kill the werecat baby, I’m just saying that if her pack or her father comes then we have to give her up to them.” Mercury said and I felt so relieved.   “I’m sorry, I was just worried, Mercury, that's all.” I replied, but Mercury had a hurt look on his face.   “Did you really think I would kill her, a baby?” Mercury asked and I instantly felt guilty.   “No, of course not. I know you would never do that, I just….I just feel protective over her and I didn’t know how you were going to react to having her in our room.” I quickly and honestly said, sighing. Mercury nodded and came over, wrapping his arms around my waist as he kissed my cheek.   “Let her sleep, she will be waking up in a few hours to be changed and fed.” I said and Mercury chuckled, but quickly covered his mouth so as to not wake her up. We walked away from the crib and got undressed before getting into bed.   “I remember all too well with Anna, she was a handful. Waking up every hour on the hour, feeding and wanting to sleep in your arms. The giggles she used to make when I made funny faces at her.” Mercury replied, remembering when Anna was a baby. Mercury and I laid in bed, talking for hours about when Anna was a baby and all the things she used to do, how cute she was and how she was always a daddy’s girl. It made both of us laugh as we remembered the time when Anna was three and Mercury brought her a beautiful pink frilly dress with matching knickers and socks, but Anna hated them and everytime I put her in them she would only last an hour before she stripped off and ran around the pack house naked. Mercury and I would find that outfit everywhere, she even hid it in his desk once, which was especially funny when he was in a meeting with other Alpha’s and pulled it out instead of the file he needed. All the Alpha’s started laughing, even more so when Mercury shook his head and blushed. We were talking for so long that pretty soon baby Abigail woke up, wanting her milk. Mercury warmed the bottle up while I picked Abigail up and rocked her back and forth until he came back. I fed her and all the time I was staring at her.   “I think Nelsa picked the right name for her, she looks like an Abigail.” I said, just as she finished her bottle. I burped her and then laid her back down in her crib, where she fell right to sleep.   “Come on, let's try and get some sleep. We have three hours before the next feeding.” I whispered, going back over to the bed.   “You never know, we may get lucky and she will sleep all through the night.” Mercury said, making me smile as I lay down next to him.
